Yesterday's High of 25.3°C was nowhere near the record of 29.4°C.
But once we get past mid-September the 25°C days do become less common.
A lot of years don't get any (2023, 2018-2018), while 2025 & 2022 each got 3, and 2014 got 5.

I just wrapped the potted tomatoes & my neighbour's little chili pepper plants in clear plastic. Which is not the ideal recommended frost blanket, but with the sun shining on it now it should trap enough heat & moisture to last the night.

And I know that early September frosts seem like a shock after the past few mild autumns, but let us flashback to September 2018, and be glad it is only risk of frost in the forecast, not risk of snowstorm. 😱

When I headed out, walking, around 6pm last evening, it was 29°C. Environment Canada forecast said Edmonton would switch to 60% chance of showers, risk of thunderstorm after 8pm. The AccuWeather forecast on my phone said, nah, for my neighbourhood there was 0% chance of precipitation all night.

I left the rain jacket at home but tucked my cheap folding umbrella in my purse.

When we left the theatre after 10pm, it was still dry & clear,. Would have had a good view of the lunar eclipse if I'd remembered to look. But I was focused on catching the end of the music on the Blues on Whyte patio.

Half-hour later, massive wind gusts started blowing furniture cushions & patio umbrellas around. I covered my drink to stop dirt blowing in. Lightning flashing. I checked the weather radar. Main storm was west of the city, heading north. But rain started a moment later & they called the show.

I probably should have left the poor umbrella folded. The heaviest rain held off until I was a block from home, anyway.

I know that a forecast will never be able to predict exact lightning strikes & other new fire starts, or the success of fire-fighting efforts to contain a blaze.

But they should be able to incorporate the impact of smoke already in the sky.

Instead, yesterday morning Environment Canada was still confidently predicting a high of 31°C for that afternoon in Edmonton, with no acknowledgement of the high-altitude smoke creating an apocalyptic orange sky. Actual high was 24°C as smoke & cloud got denser as the day went on.

Today, I'm waiting for their promised gusty northwest winds to clear the smoke out of here, but no improvement yet...

And I'm grumpy 'cause I've been indoors since Thursday when allegedly clear air turned out to be full of pollen (ragweed?) & an allergy attack triggered one of my migraine-like attacks for 2.5 days. Not risking smoke today.
