The May Long Weekend is infamous for its camping weather.
The average High is 17°C and Low is 6°C.
Recent summery years which got to 25°C were 2023, 2018, 2017, 2008...
And recent frosty years with Lows below freezing were 2025, 2021, 2015, 2009...

The last time that we recorded any precipitation was two weeks ago, on April 26th. #yegwx #yeg
But on the plus side, we are at the point of the year where the switch usually gets flipped, and our monsoon season kicks in...

The forecast had a low of 0°C this morning. It actually went down to -2/-3 in the urban stations. I might have brought in some of the little seedlings on the porch if that had been forecast. (I did bring in the tomatoes, they're fine.)
So, we're definitely not an earlier-than-average last frost this year!
But at least it didn't snow, and the forecast is back to highs above 18°C and lows above 6°C for the rest of the week (after tonight). Tomatoes will head back outside tomorrow & I can finish transplanting the frost-hardy flower & veg seedlings.
(ALT for quoted post: screenshots of the linked Tableau interactive chart, showing first/last frost dates for Edmonton Blatchford station since 1880s, with running average line superimposed (1st image) or 25 & 10 percentile lines.)

May 5th is the average day of Blatchford's final frost.
So half of the time we're done, and half of the time there's more to come.
By May 11th there's still a 25% risk of frost, and by May 17th it's down to 10%.

So we've reached the end of March and it's time for...wait, what's that? That was actually April?
Oh. Hmmm.
Well then, I guess it's time for our big look back at Edmonton's weather for ̶M̶a̶r̶c̶h̶ April 2026...

Hopefully this will be the last "It's still winter?" post, at least for awhile. #yegwx #yeg
April 26th's High of 0.4°C was our 4th coldest on record. The Low of -6.6°C with 7th coldest.
Both of those were the coldest April 26th since 1956.
https://public.tableau.com/shared/365J4333Y?:display_count=n&:origin=viz_share_link -
April 25th's High of -2.1°C was almost a record. #yegwx #yeg
Our coldest April 25th on record was -2.2°C, in both 1954 & 1945, so 2026 will need to settle for 3rd coldest.
And the low of -6.1°C was 5th coldest on record.
https://public.tableau.com/shared/NNFW3G3G7?:display_count=n&:origin=viz_share_link -
April 24th wasn't warm, although its High did manage to make it above freezing.
But that High of 1.3°C was the 5th coldest on record (recently 2008 was 2nd coldest).
Just a few days earlier April 20th's High of 22.7°C was its 5th warmest on record.

I've been debating going to the show tonight at the Blue Chair (the last weekend before they close, and an artist I do enjoy and haven't seen for quite a while). But, uggghhhh this weather, I don't want to go out. But I already didn't go to the show I was looking at for last night, because ugghh, the weather, I didn't want to go out.
I check their website, to see if the show is sold out, anyway:
April 24th, Romi Mayes is on our stage as part of her spring solo tour she is one of my personal favorites! -CANCELLED ROMI IS STUCK IN A BLIZZARD IN SASKATOON.
uggghhhh this weather

...if we do actually get some Highs below freezing, that will indeed be pretty unusual for this late into spring.
2013, 2008 & 2005 also got some, but most years are done with that by mid-April. #yegwx #yeg
https://public.tableau.com/shared/BFFH9N2PF?:display_count=n&:origin=viz_share_link -
At this point what else is there to say?
More snow sucks. #yegwx #yeg
But it's also not *that* unusual.
We still average around 8cm of snow after April 23rd.
And the only recent years which were done by now were 2025, 2023, 2018 & 2012.

For those keeping score, the official high temperatures for Sunday-Monday-Tuesday in Edmonton this week were 19.2°C (with a rather stiff breeze), 22.7°C, and 20.2°C. So, Accuweather forecast was closer; the Environment Canada forecast was overly cautious.
I hope you all were able to get out & enjoy it. Because both forecasts agree that at least 3 of the next 4 days will have highs of 1°C or less. With snow. ☃️
I'm working on a new arrangement of Ian Tyson's "Springtime in Alberta". I played my current (country-folk) arrangement at the funk-etc jam on Sunday (where there is no patio, but they had the doors wide open to let in the warm air), then afterwards started to wonder if I could somehow turn it into a soul-funk song. I think I've got the tweaked vocal melody down, now just have to practice the bass line.
The lyrics remain the same: "Must be springtime in Alberta. Warm, sunny days; endless skies of blue. Then without a warning, another winter storm comes raging through..."

April 20th's High of 22.7°C was the 5th warmest on record, and our warmest day since 23.2°C on October 10th.
The Low of 2.9°C was pretty unremarkable as 43rd.

RE: https://mstdn.ca/@yegwxnerdery/116437095898789325
So April 20th is our first 20⁰C day of 2026, and our warmest day since October 10th.
It's fairly typical for these to start popping up in Mid-April (although the forecast High of 3⁰C later this week is also fairly typical)
#yegwx #yeg -
April 19th's High of 19.2°C didn't quite give us our first 20°C of the year, but it was our warmest day since October 10th.

Spring started 4 weeks ago (...wait, that can't be right, can it?)
Has this been the coldest spring ever? #yegwx #yeg
Usurpingly, no.
It definitely hasn't been warm, but the average High of 3°C is our 126th warmest out of 147. The average Low of -6°C is 105th warmest...
https://public.tableau.com/shared/4N77QKB5K?:display_count=n&:origin=viz_share_link -
April 16th was cold. #yegwx #yeg
Its High of -0.5°C was our 5th coldest on record, and Low of -8.2°C was 6th coldest.
That made it our coldest April 16th since 1989, although 2002 was close.
The average High for mid-April is 10°C, and Low is -1°C.

#YEGwx highly scientific spring weather forecasting poll:
-
Edmonton folks:
AccuWeather has been consistently predicting highs of 20°C and above for Sunday, Monday, & Tuesday. Environment Canada is sticking to more temperate predictions, 14-16°, although they're now saying maybe 20 by Tuesday.Where are you placing your bets?
(Poll in reply)(PS, for non-Edmonton folks: today's high was -1°C, which is considerable warmer than it got yesterday. We have fresh snow reflecting back the evening sunshine, although not quite as much snow as this morning.)
-
The airport got another 1.3cm of snow on the 15th, following the 2.5cm on the 14th.
That brings April's total to 10.9cm, which is getting close to the average of 13cm.

Snowing outdoors.
Growing indoors. -
The airport got 2.5cm of snow on April 14th (and possibly more overnight).
That brings April's total to 9.6cm so far.
On average April gets around 13cm for the whole month.

Just in time for us to head off skiing it’s going to get cold and snowy! Winter’s coming back to Edmonton.

Edmonton, Alberta
❄️ Steady winter weather for the Capital! We’re hitting a high of -8°C today under partly cloudy skies. Not much wind to speak of, which makes that single-digit cold feel quite manageable. It’s a great day to hit the river valley trails—just watch for icy patches. Perfect weather for a heavy sweater and a hot cocoa. Stay frosty, Edmonton! 🏒

Looks like we're going to stay about 0c tonight, so commutes shouldn't be too horrific in the morning after all this rain.
Either way, glad I won't have to be anywhere until noon.
