In a month's time I will be visiting the #wasmio in #barcelona (as a participant) and I am pretty excited as I haven't visited either, yet.
I stumbled upon #WebAssembly in 2023 (okey, I've heard of it even earlier, but used it onyl in 2023 during the #12in23 by #exercism ), and in 2024 we've been experimenting with it in the context of #GreenIT at our company (i.e. having tiny Wasm Modules spinned up directly in clusters, instead of heavy weight #docker containers). We haven't had the chance to use it in production yet, and so I am really looking forward to see how other people use it and connect with the community.
Anyone here joining the conference as well? Any sessions or speakers or other highlights you're looking forward to? And any hidden gems to visit in Barcelona (as I'll be staying for days longer, after the conference 😇 )?

I learned* 12 languages in 2023: a retrospective
https://dev.to/sethcalebweeks/i-learned-12-languages-in-2023-a-retrospective-3e68
Last year, Exercism put together the #12in23 challenge. The goal was to learn a new programming language each month throughout the year. I was one of 135 people who completed the challenge, and I learned a lot along the way! TL;DR Exercism is an...

#12in23 and Advent of Code 2023
Last year I did have too much time on my hand, and while I spent a lot of time chilling, I did miss using my brain at least a little.
So I worked on these two challenges.https://christof.damian.net/2024/01/12in23-and-advent-of-code-2023.html

2023 has been great for me, but let's not pretend like it's been all rainbows and unicorns.
In 2023, I failed in the following ways 💩:
- gained back most of the fat that I lost in Q1 2022,
- mishandled a transphobic incident at my meetup,
- did not finish the #12in23 Exercism challenge,
- got COVID twice and the common cold twice because of travel, and lost 8 weeks of social life total because of it,
- quit attending German classes because of time, money, and laziness
- read only 3 books -
#project wise, it was a great year for me. I kicked the tires on 12 different programming languages (for #12in23) and launched two new static sites (for #media #reviews and #AdventofCode). I also shipped some #OpenSource #Python tools I'm really proud of: the Universal Test Runner and a #Reddit data archiver (which got press coverage). 3/6

Exercism #12in23 challenge completed.
Just in time. -
I did #Exercism's #12in23 this year and just published my last #blog post of the year. I talked about my experience with each of these 12 languages:
- #golang
- #elixir
- #julia
- #rust
- #clojure
- #visualbasic
- #swift
- #jq
- #ruby
- #wasm
- #wren
- #luaIt was a fun tour of what's out there today. I had a blast learning and broadening my horizons. Enjoy and see you next year!

Finished the #WebAssembly exercises for the #12in23 challenge with #exercism.
Still 4 languages to go.
With #Rlang next. -
Agenda for the day:
- hang Christmas lights (it's early, but we like them and it's not like we're decorating for thanksgiving)
- more #Exercism #12in23 (writing #WASM by hand, a slow but interesting exercise) ( #programing )
- get close to the end of 13 sentinels ( #videogames )
- watch the #Michigan game ( #GoBlue! )Fixing to be a great Saturday!
-
For some stupid reason, I added elisp to my #12in23 . I wrangled my way through.
All my other languages were quite sensible.

Today's adventure in learning more programming languages (#exercism #12in23) involved trying to install a recent version of #ruby in Pop_OS which was failing due to some SSL library inconsistency, a workaround for which uninstalled my #RStudio 🤬
I abandoned 2 different install managers before finally getting one working. I have it running now, but not off to a great start.
Doing my prelim reading while I waited... "python, but with full OOP" and "parentheses are *optional*"!?!

I'm doing the #12in23 challenge on #exercism and I have to say it's going pretty well considering it's July... I've officially ticked off 12 languages with at least 5 exercises other than the generic 'hello, world!".
There will be a big blog post to write at the end of the year, but so far the #haskell community solutions are the most interesting/surprising to me - so much to learn about good ways to write things there.

Happy Friday!
I've got a new #opensource #python project out: The Universal Test Runner!
Its goal is to be able to run unit tests in any project repo, regardless of language. Just run `t` and your test suite is run.
It's got fairly wide language support ( #rust #clojure #golang #javascript #typescript #python Makefiles #elixir ) and I'm planning on adding more as I go (or feel free to open an issue!)
It's also great for Exercism's #12in23, if folks are doing that.

Just completed my second language for the #12in23 challenge on @exercism_io.
Fortran posed some problems, but I got through it.Next up: Lua

@brodriguesco https://exercism.org/tracks/emacs-lisp - it's on my list (for practice; I do know some) towards my #12in23 goal.
I did a handful of clojure exercises already, so I already have the muscle-memory for more lisp.

Dabbling in Rust for #MechanicalMarch on #Exercism #12in23
I have to admit, every attempt at a typed language (except for TS) is pretty challenging for me 😅

CW: Gamification of programming language learning
I was going to do #Rust for the #MechanicalMarch of the #12in23 #Exercism challenge... but ended up doing #Go instead.
Not further down the syllabus tree to really get to the juicy parts just yet, so can't say much about it.
On a side note, I am not sure how much the whole #Go #telemetry scandal is affecting the community, or new people joining. It'd be interesting to know if the pace of people doing #Go at #Exercism has been affected at all 🤔

I'm trying to do the #12in23 challenge (solve code exercises in 12 languages in 2023) on #exercism and my first foray into a new language is #clojure :clojure: (I like #lisp). I'm not sure I really want to be a beginner in a language again - this is hard work!
It wasn't mentioned in the track docs, but I did find the "thread-first" macro `->` very helpful - more or less a pipe: https://clojuredocs.org/clojure.core/-%3E
