#til about "client-side media processing" via #wasm. In my world, that should run on the server. Guess I'm getting old. 🤓
Seems to be clever to circumvent some server challenges, but you need to test it across all browser. Interesting nonetheless.

CW: Venting, code stuff
I want to learn #C and #Zig (I've written a couple small programs in zig 0.13 and liked it), but all my (15+ y) real experience is in python and javascript. I use those at work and they've started to feel... dirty? Infected?
They've become productivity-coded to me because of work, and I want to code for the love of coding but all my py/js experience makes lower level langs feel unintuitive and needlessly complex.
I also *detest* the compile step. Makefiles and linked libraries make me want to gag the same way package managers seem to set off systems devs, and any time I get to the part where i need to tinker with a build.zig or figure out how to make SDL3 work I get super turned off, even if I enjoy the structure and control the languages afford.
(Watching a wall of warnings fly by as I try to compile hello world for an esp32 does not instill confidence in my code or feel low level to me lol)
My recent experience with #uxn was the best #programming experience of my life -- knowing my code did what i wanted byte-for-byte, and that the compile step was effectively just turning symbols straight into bytes was super intuitive. It was also far enough from py/js that my bad habits didn't impact my experience. Uxn is intentionally small, though... not for everything.
I'm still toying with the idea of starting to write raw #wasm. It doesn't spark as much joy as uxn does, but has a similar mouthfeel.
This essay doesn't have a real conclusion; just venting.

I wonder why we do not have a repository for wasm components and their wit based descriptions, like we have mvnrepository etc for the jvm world. Does anyone know of such an effort?
wkg already allows to upload in an OCI compatible style. What would be required now, is to make this searchable.

I like #webassembly, #wasm, the component model, #wit (webassembly interface types) and #emacs. Hence I wrote an treesitter based emacs mode for WIT files. The lack if support for it drove me crazy. Give it a shot (currently a manual install is required, a melpa package is planned)

The first Zig plugin is almost ready to be merged! In the meantime, let's play a quick guessing game, can you guess what it's for?
Here are a few hints:
- it's a service we either don't have at all or have to pay for (never understood why our forges don't include it by default)
- it won't make much sense for gitroot on gitroot, but I'll use it anyway so I can show you what it looks like
- i had to add 2 new APIs to the plugin-sdk to build it:

I've put a README on my pure #zig #fits library now that it is mature enough to do a great many things with binary tables:

You can even compile this library to #wasm for FITS in the browser. It's used in my kerrz #blackhole #raytracing demo and lets you download Cunningham's transfer function tables computed on your phone!
