  2. An informative and insightful conversation for someone like me who is trying to understand criticism of Israel and Zionism without anti-Semitism.

David Remnick speaks with Omer Bartov, a professor of Holocaust and genocide studies at Brown University and author of “Israel: What Went Wrong?” Bartov, who grew up in a Zionist home in Israel and served in the Israel Defense Forces, believes Zionism has morphed into an ideology of extremism that led to genocide in Gaza following the Hamas attacks of October 7th.

  3. "Iceland is an island just south of the Arctic Circle, perched directly atop a rift where two tectonic plates are drifting apart, exposing the magma below. It is a small country (physically about the size of Kentucky, with a population a little larger than Cleveland, Ohio’s), but what it lacks in size it makes up for in drama. It is a land of glaciers and volcanos, ice and fire, wind and rain and snow — and deep heat that makes them bearable."

  12. @davidr I believe, unfortunately, one has to drain the water off the bottom of the tank (gasoline is less dense so floats on top of it). For example, light aircraft have a drainage point at the sump of the tank, so as part of the daily checks, the pilot can drain some fuel and check for water. (Thus it mightn't be obvious if one just tips fuel out of the top of the tank).

  13. "... when people talk about 'democracy', they mean the democracy that we've had for the past 100 years and they think that that is the absolutely universal default. And it is ... historically contingent, it's probably moved quite a long way through it's life cycle - is my guess - and it's coming to the end of its life."
