I read all of it as a young man. It meant a lot to me. Later I routinely picked up one volume or another and read a few sections. Each time that was a naturally enjoyable reading experience, meeting the mood of the moment. Not a forced exercise to prove something to myself.

One day I hope to re-read the entire series, one more time.

The Recherche creates a world and a society and a way of responding to others and to ourselves, at once unique and historically specific and universal.

The obvious danger is to treat it as too big a thing and then never do it. Looking at your question, I'd say yes, absolutely, read "a little Proust".

I'd just give the first volume a try, a cheap paperback stuffed into your coat pocket, read it on the train or in a sandwhich bar at lunchtime, a few pages at a time. If you don't like it, no big deal. If you do like it, finish Vol I. And if you _really_ like it, hell, you can even move on to Vol II!

    Have fun!

    1) If you have not seen John Carpenter's cinematic masterpiece "Big Trouble in Little China" - I am immensely jealous of you. Why, you may ask? Because you now have the opportunity, for the first time, to watch this mystical journey into the mystic world of San Fransisco's 1980's Chinatown, that will ensure that you remember what ol; Jack Burton does when the earth quakes, and the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake. There's likely a myriad of ways at your disposal to enjoy this gem - you probably shouldn't waste any more time reading this and simply get to watching this film.

    2) If you have watched John Carpenter's cinematic masterpiece "Big Trouble in Little China" - well - it's probably time for a re-watch - isn't it?

  7. CW: email rant

@chris_e_simpson Addition/side-note: gmail webapp has gotten noticably slower and more bulky in the past few years as they've changed design & packed in Meetings.

I have a *lot* of tabs open in FF, and gmail tabs are now among slowest as of 6 months ago. I expect & rely on performant tools from the #GooglePlex. If they can't manage that, the value proposition drops (hough heavens knows what I'd replace it with; my dependency runs deep at this point).

I propose using the term "under-hydrated" or perhaps even minding your own diagnostic business :)

  20. I have not yet gotten around to filing a small claim at Miele for their unreliable tumble drier (I find that stuff kinda hard most of the time). But I was pleased to get a message yesterday to say that they have relented and now will send a service engineer at no cost to me.

So now I'm trying to book a time for this to happen, but they don't seem to be in. Must have been a finish early Friday or something.

  21. How long should I force myself to listen to hold music before concluding they are not gonna answer? It's been 23 minutes now. The office closes in another 23 minutes apparently.

  22. Rescheduled cello lesson was a bit challenging. Not the sight-reading of a brand new (to me) Strauss waltz, but the fact that there were no cars on the drive and no buses for ages.

So I had to zip-tie a rucksack to my cello case and ebike to my lesson instead. No zip-ties broke but I don't think I'll be trying that again.
