Amal al-Sadah, la esposa más joven de Bin Laden, resultó herida en una pierna.
¿Qué ocurrió con el cuerpo?
Tras abandonar Abbottabad, el cuerpo fue trasladado al portaaviones estadounidense USS Carl Vinson.
Allí se realizaron fotografías, mediciones antropométricas y pruebas rápidas de ADN comparándolas con muestras de familiares.
Una vez confirmada la identidad, el cadáver fue preparado siguiendo, según Estados Unidos, determinados ritos islámicos básicos antes de ser introducido en una bolsa lastrada y arrojado al mar Arábigo en menos de veinticuatro horas.
La administración Obama explicó que tomó esa decisión para evitar que una tumba pudiera convertirse en lugar de peregrinación para simpatizantes extremistas.
La medida fue criticada por algunos sectores y defendida por otros, pero desde entonces no existe ningún lugar físico donde pueda rendírsele homenaje.
Lo que encontraron dentro del complejo
La operación permitió incautar el mayor archivo de documentos internos de Al Qaeda jamás obtenido.
Se recuperaron más de 470.000 archivos, entre ellos cartas manuscritas, discos duros, memorias USB, vídeos y ordenadores.
Gracias a esos documentos se supo que, pese a permanecer oculto, Bin Laden seguía dirigiendo parte de la estrategia de Al Qaeda mediante mensajeros.
También se descubrió que la organización estaba mucho más debilitada de lo que muchos imaginaban y que Bin Laden estaba preocupado por la pérdida de apoyo entre parte del mundo musulmán debido a las numerosas víctimas civiles causadas por los atentados.
Los documentos y testimonios familiares también mostraron una realidad mucho más compleja que la imagen pública que proyectaba.
Su familia vivía sometida a normas extremadamente estrictas.
Diversos testimonios de algunos de sus hijos y de sus esposas describen una disciplina férrea, largas temporadas de aislamiento y un control constante sobre la vida cotidiana.
Sin embargo, conviene ser prudentes con algunas historias muy difundidas.
Se ha afirmado, por ejemplo, que en los ordenadores del complejo aparecieron películas de Disney, videojuegos o vídeos de internet.
Es cierto que durante el análisis del material incautado se localizaron archivos de ese tipo, pero no puede asegurarse que fueran utilizados personalmente por Bin Laden, ya que en la vivienda residían varias familias y numerosos niños.También han circulado relatos sobre coches de lujo, castigos familiares o determinadas manías domésticas.
Algunas proceden de testimonios directos de familiares; otras nunca han podido verificarse plenamente.
Los historiadores suelen diferenciarlas de los hechos documentados.Un dato especialmente llamativo sí quedó confirmado.
Entre los documentos apareció un testamento redactado años antes en el que pedía expresamente a varios de sus hijos que no siguieran su camino dentro de Al Qaeda y que intentaran construir una vida alejada del terrorismo.
Resulta una contradicción evidente si se compara con los mensajes públicos en los que animaba a otros jóvenes a unirse a la organización.
¿Qué pasó con sus esposas?
Tras la operación, las autoridades pakistaníes detuvieron a las tres esposas que se encontraban en la vivienda: Khairiah Sabar, Siham Sabar y Amal Ahmed al-Sadah, junto con varios hijos y nietos.
Fueron trasladados a una residencia vigilada en Islamabad, donde permanecieron durante meses mientras eran interrogados por los servicios de inteligencia pakistaníes.
Estados Unidos tuvo un acceso muy limitado a ellas.En abril de 2012, un tribunal pakistaní las declaró culpables de residir ilegalmente en el país.
La condena fue de 45 días de prisión, tiempo que prácticamente ya habían cumplido durante su detención.El 26 de abril de 2012 fueron deportadas.
Las dos viudas saudíes regresaron a Arabia Saudita junto con varios de sus hijos.
Amal al-Sadah, de nacionalidad yemení, también salió de Pakistán con el grupo por razones humanitarias.
A partir de ese momento, todas desaparecieron prácticamente de la vida pública y desde entonces se sabe muy poco de ellas.La muerte de Osama bin Laden no supuso el final de Al Qaeda, aunque sí debilitó enormemente a la organización.
Con el paso de los años surgieron otros grupos yihadistas aún más violentos, como el autodenominado Estado Islámico (ISIS), que incluso llegó a disputar el liderazgo del terrorismo yihadista internacional.
Más de una década después de su muerte, Bin Laden sigue siendo una figura estudiada por historiadores, analistas y expertos en seguridad, no por admiración, sino porque comprender cómo un hombre criado entre privilegios terminó liderando una de las organizaciones terroristas más letales de la historia ayuda a entender uno de los capítulos más oscuros del siglo XXI.
