  1. say one had a #database of books with 50k records in it. What would you use to explore / manipulate it?

Thinking more along the lines of a GUI rather than pandas, etc.

Extra points if it can take snapshots of the db on command and one can easily compare/merge (think git diffs) the snapshots.

  3. 2/ Bringing Trey Grainger (author of AI-Powered Search and#Solr in Action) and formerly Chief Algorithms Office at #Lucidworks seems to really being pushing things along.

At times I've tried using it as my daily driver but tend to fall back on #Google, as much as I don't want to. Why? It comes down to my fundamental hypothesis about #WebSearch. The search engine to dethrone Google will need a significantly different approach than Google uses for ranking (imho, #HumanAugmented).

  8. you know, when you try to run a command on a #docker #container using `docker-compose run` and it fails due to a missing dependency (#scikit-learn) but then works when run from the terminal container? 🤔

  9. 1/ I was raised in a politically (and religiously) #conservative family in a rural, conservative area. I was on #RushLimbaugh as a preteen and shared the #ClintonBodyCount list with a radio host back in the late '90's with the resulting fireworks.

I don't like being pigeonholed into right or left and historically would have considered myself a moderate independent - but things have become more polarized with time.

I love and respect people on both the left and the right and I love...

  10. FWIW, my take-away here is not that the developer(s) should be fired but that this is probably indicative of a company #culture that:
    1. Is attempting to save money by hiring #inexperienced #developers (remember #boeing's outsourcing nightmare?) and/or
    2. Is #overworking staff resulting in stupid mistakes

  15. 8/ I think there is also #opportunity when it comes to #ResearchQuestions. What if an individual could post a question and provide a bounty for the answer to that question? This would result in better curated results while simultaneously providing income to the individuals providing the answer

Yes, the mathematics here would be complex. But I don't think it should be a winner-takes-all situation. This is why the #algorithms would need to be #open and #public - to ensure they are #fair and #just

  16. 3/ Over time #SearchEngines largely replaced #WebDirectories - the ability to #search more of the #internet became more important than the ability to find the #BestOfTheWeb.

While we gained much in this manner we also lost much. I think we can still see folks yearning for #HumanAugmentation in the popularity of #AwesomeLists, e.g.:
    github.com/vinta/awesome-pytho
    github.com/avelino/awesome-go
    github.com/vuejs/awesome-vue
    github.com/papers-we-love/pape

    The lists go on...

  17. 2/ But how could a #SearchEngine meaningfully improve #socioeconomic #equity?

I believe the best #search is provided by machines plus #HumanAugmentation.

For a long time we had #directories, e.g. #yahoo, #dmoz/#odp, #WorldWideWebVirtualLibrary, #InternetPublicLibrary that provides human #curated search results...and these results where often of high quality but limited in scale.

As the #internet became more integral to human life the ability to maintain human-curated directories decreased.

  18. @victorwynne I miss #Alaska, Old Glenn Highway and all. Spent a summer as a #deckhand commercial set-net fishing for salmon at #Ninilchik.

  19. Granted, when I bought it I souped it up a bit:
    - Replaced HDDs with SSDs
    - Added a dedicated GPU
    - Upgraded from 8 to 16 GB of RAM
    - Added a dedicated WiFi card

    But it's still getting #LongInTheTooth

  25. It feels like we could find the person(s) who moved between these geographic areas carrying it with them.

In fact, it seems that an individual returning from Akureyi (Iceland) which had an epidemic in 1948-49 brought it back to Williamston (MA) in 1956!

It seems difficult to communicate except under certain "ideal" circumstances (but we don't know what those are).

Most of the real work was done by Roman Casero (for #Gerardus), I've just customized to my liking and ironed out a few issues I experienced when setting it up myself.
