#webdirectories — Public Fediverse posts

Spotted in my RSS feeds: the Oceania Web Atlas. From the landing page: “A curated directory of personal websites by people living in or from Oceania: Australia, Aotearoa/New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, and other Pacific Islands.” Early days for this directory so don’t expect too much yet.

Hey people, can I ask advice?

The site for my other account @FediFollows is at https://fedi.directory, it's an old-style web directory but for Fediverse accounts.

The current version is built on independently-hosted WordPress software, but can't help feeling like there might be a better fit with other software?

I can't do it static as it needs the search function. Also can't install/update software manually, it needs to be managed hosting.

Any ideas?

Indeed: web directories! Given the collapse of effective search through Google &co, we will have to return to those directories. Human-controlled, intelligent lists of access points to real, validated information.

3/ Over time #SearchEngines largely replaced #WebDirectories - the ability to #search more of the #internet became more important than the ability to find the #BestOfTheWeb.

While we gained much in this manner we also lost much. I think we can still see folks yearning for #HumanAugmentation in the popularity of #AwesomeLists, e.g.:
