#Transport for #London Freedom of Information release:
✈️ #TfL has released a February 2026 policy paper on Heathrow expansion following a Freedom of Information request. The document sets out TfL and the Mayor of London’s concerns over the environmental and transport impacts of a proposed third runway at #Heathrow. It warns expansion could increase aircraft movements by 58 per cent and add more than 40,000 daily vehicle trips unless major public transport investment is secured. The paper highlights risks to carbon targets, air quality, noise levels and road congestion, while noting changes since the original Airports National Policy Statement in 2018, including the Elizabeth line, #ULEZ expansion and tighter climate obligations. TfL says any revised policy must include binding environmental conditions, stronger public transport targets and safeguards to prevent worsening pollution and congestion.

🇨🇦🚇 #Alstom has marked the opening of the Réseau express métropolitain (REM) extension to Montreal’s West Island, delivered by CDPQ Infra. The 14km extension adds four stations and connects Anse-à-l’Orme to the existing network, bringing the REM to 64km and 23 stations. The fully electric automated metro operates 20 hours a day, with trains every four minutes on central sections at peak times. Alstom supplied the driverless light #metro system, including 212 #Metropolis cars, Urbalis signalling, platform screen doors and onboard Wi-Fi, and will support operations and maintenance for 30 years through its Pulsar joint venture. The project is expected to improve access to central Montreal, reduce reliance on cars and support local jobs and expertise in automated #transport systems across #Quebec.

🏴🚉📚🤝 A volunteer-run bookshop at Pitlochry #railway station has raised more than £500,000 for charity, reaching £504,918 since opening in 2006. Run by local volunteers under ScotRail’s Adopt-a-Station scheme, the bookshop sells donated books from station premises provided rent-free, with all proceeds going directly to a range of local, national and international #charities.
Beneficiaries include organisations such as #Cancer Research #UK, Children’s Hospices Across #Scotland, Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance and Tayside Mountain Rescue, alongside local community groups. The initiative began as a project to revitalise unused station space and later expanded into larger premises due to its success, increasing fundraising capacity over time.
The milestone was marked at a reception in Pitlochry on 15 May 2026, with #ScotRail praising the scheme as an example of community-led station adoption and volunteers highlighting two decades of effort and public support.

🏴💳🚉 #Transport for #Wales (TfW) has launched contactless pay-as-you-go rail travel in North East Wales and border stations, allowing passengers at 15 stations to tap in and tap out using a contactless card or smart device. Fares are calculated automatically with daily and weekly caps, removing the need to buy tickets in advance.
The stations include Bidston, Buckley, Caergwrle, Cefn-y-Bedd, Gwersyllt, Hawarden, Hawarden Bridge, Heswall, Hope, Neston, Penyffordd, Shotton (High Level), Upton, Wrexham Central and Wrexham General.
The scheme builds on South East Wales, where over 4.5 million journeys have been made. TfW says the expansion improves convenience and value for regular local travel as part of Network North Wales. Customers must use the same card or device for tap in and out, and the North East and South East schemes operate separately, with other ticket options available for cross-region travel. Further stations will be added later this year.

🚸🚦 New pedestrian crossings are improving safety for pupils travelling to and from schools across Greater #Manchester. Since 2017, #Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has upgraded 59 junctions and installed or improved 152 crossings, placing 210 schools within a five-minute walk of a new crossing.
One major scheme at the junction of Higher Lane, Pinfold Lane and Park Lane near Philips High School in Whitefield followed concerns about safety after collisions and repeated near misses. New “green man” crossings now stop traffic in all directions at once, making it safer and easier for around 2,000 pedestrians using the junction daily. Pavements have also been widened and accessibility features added for visually impaired users.
TfGM says the programme, funded by Active Travel England, aims to encourage walking through safer, more #accessible streets near schools, parks and hospitals.
