🚆📱💳📈 More than one million journeys have now been made using Tap & Go on the #Merseyrail network, marking a major milestone for smart ticketing in the #Liverpool City Region. Available at all 69 stations, the system allows passengers to travel using a #MetroCard, contactless bank card, smartphone or smartwatch, with most choosing to use mobile phones. Tap & Go automatically calculates the cheapest fare and removes the need to buy paper tickets in advance. More than 35,000 journeys were recorded during last month’s three-day Grand National Festival at Aintree. Backed by a £10 million investment from the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, the scheme is part of wider plans for a fully integrated #transport network covering rail, buses and ferries. Passengers are reminded to tap in and tap out to complete their journeys.

I remember the early years of the MetroCard when people were grumbling about the loss of bus and subway tokens; now we can mourn the loss of the MetroCard as well. As of Jan 1, New York has ceased sales of the card as it switches to the mostly smartphone-based OMNY system, with the benefits of more convenience and heavier government surveillance. Brave new world.

I come down the stairs at the 44th entrance and these young women are dancing in place. “Shake it!” I say, “Shake it like you mean it!” and they clutch each other, laughing.
But my card is empty and we become grownup New Yorkers, using neighboring OMNI machines. Once my card is full, and I realize their music is still softly playing, I dance a bit as I retrieve my card. I Love New York.

Do you remember the #MetroCard Bus? It debuted in 1996 and traveled around the five boroughs making regularly scheduled stops at senior citizen centers, shopping and community centers, and along major bus routes.

👋 Goodbye #MetroCard! After 32 years, MetroCard sales will end on December 31. As we count down to the end of MetroCard in #NYC, the #NYTransitMuseum will be sharing archival MetroCard content from our collection each Wednesday through the end of 2025.

Mayor Steve Rotheram has launched the Care Leavers #MetroCard, offering free travel on #buses, #trains, and #ferries to care leavers aged 18-21 across the #Liverpool City Region. The initiative, benefiting around 1,500 care leavers, removes #transport barriers to education, employment, and social activities, promoting independence and reducing isolation. Mayor Rotheram highlighted its positive impact on young people transitioning to adulthood, giving them the freedom to explore opportunities and connect with their communities. Care leavers Tyler Preistley and Bekie Mariel shared how the pass has improved their lives, providing financial relief and increased mobility. The MetroCard is automatically issued by local authorities when care leavers turn 18.

Wow, machines won't allow you to add value to a #MetroCard, and if you replace an expired card the new expiration date on all of them is Jan 31st 2025 ( < 3 months from now). So I guess they're _finally_ phasing them out.

Sucks to be you if you were trying to get onto the subway with cash*, though! No way to refill or get an OMNY card at my local station. You're just shit out of luck, and the police will violently arrest you if you attempt to jump the turnstile. Get a car, loser!

Last week there was this #art exhibit at #WTC where they got those #sculpture's made with #MetroCard's that feature the 12 Chinese #zodiac animals, which are pretty cool. One thing I noticed is that most sculptures are named "(animal) King" or "Golden (animal)" but this one is called "Pig of love and peace" which is quite fitting.

Of course, people ask me why I don't use mobile tap?
1. I dislike having NFC on all the time, risk of card theft
2. Authorization can be slow (but yes, faster than 3~4 swipes)
3. Inconvenient if somehow declined (happened before)
4. I like to collect tickets (+ SmartLink & OMNY card)

@AndyHat Oh, good point; that makes the math even easier. 132/30 = $4.40 per day. $34.80/7 = $4.97 per day. That's quite a difference; OMNY costs over $17 (13%) more per month! That's an extra $200 per year.

So I was standing in line for the special $8.25 ( + $1 card fee) #MetroCard for the #AirTrain to #JFK, and suddenly people are calling out "they are open, go go go!" and the lines gradually become a crowd surging over to the gates which are in fact all standing open.

And as I'm passing through the gate the speakers say "AirTrain fees are temporarily waived at this time, please proceed to the gates".

What's up with that, anyway?

So I was standing in line for the special $8.25 ( + $1 card fee) #MetroCard for the #AirTrain to #JFK, and suddenly people are calling out "they are open, go go go!" and the lines gradually become a crowd surging over to the gates which are in fact all standing open.

And as I'm passing through the gate the speakers say "AirTrain fees are temporarily waived at this time, please proceed to the gates".

What's up with that, anyway?
