  2. 🚈 The #Liverpool City Region Combined Authority is examining how rail services should operate after the current #Merseyrail concession ends in 2028. A report due in March sets out progress to date and highlights the network’s role in supporting an integrated #transport system. It indicates that public ownership could improve links between transport modes and enhance services for passengers, reflecting wider government policy to bring more operators into public control. The authority is being asked to commission a full assessment of options for taking Merseyrail in-house, alongside a delivery plan. A further report will follow. Mayor Steve Rotheram said the aim is a reliable, efficient and affordable network, pointing to investment in buses, ferries, ticketing, active travel and new stations.

  3. Public #transport will be at the centre of major changes across the #Liverpool City Region in 2026. Tap and Go smart ticketing will be fully rolled out on #Merseyrail, allowing passengers to #travel using contactless bank cards and digital wallets, with daily and weekly fare capping to guarantee the lowest price. A pilot is already under way and will expand across the network ahead of full launch. Bus franchising will begin in St Helens and Wirral from September, giving the city region greater control over fares, routes and timetables, with region-wide rollout planned by 2027 and closer integration with rail and other modes. Three new rail stations at Carr Mill, Daresbury and Woodchurch will move into further development, supported by Transport for City Regions funding. Meanwhile, the £26m Royal Daffodil, the first new Mersey Ferry in more than 60 years, is due to enter service, offering increased capacity, full accessibility and cleaner propulsion technology.

  10. Work has begun on installing lifts at Aigburth and Rock Ferry stations as part of a £9.5m investment to improve accessibility on the #Merseyrail network. Plans are also underway for lifts at Port Sunlight and Walton, which will bring the total of fully accessible stations in the #Liverpool City Region to 66 out of 87. This supports Mayor Steve Rotheram’s goal to create a fully step-free rail network by 2030. The improvements complement £500m worth of new trains featuring sliding step technology for level boarding. The city region’s rail network, already praised by Paralympian Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, is set to become one of the most accessible in the country, forming part of a broader vision for an integrated, London-style public transport system.

Funded by Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, improvements include new cladding, LED lighting, signage, a covered staircase, and relocated secure bike storage. Work starts this autumn and is expected to finish by end of 2025. This project is the first phase of a wider station transformation, aiming to reflect Moorfields’ importance to Liverpool’s commercial heart.
