  1. Courage in the face of oppression is vital..

I grew up in Norman OK, home to the U of Oklahoma, and a "sundown" town where Black people were only allowed in town during the day.

This didn't formally end until 1967, when Dr. George Henderson became the first Black OU professor, the first Black homeowner in Norman. His son, George Jr. was in my class in high school. . He and sister Michelle, 1 year younger, were the first Black people I ever knew.

I saw your mention of work in mountain rescue! When I was a volunteer crew member on tall ship Elissa at the Texas Seaport Museum in Galveston, I was trained in rig rescue. Our job was to get into this harness and be hoisted aloft to help should a crew member be injured in the rigging (80-100 feet above the deck) and unable to climb down.
This me in about 1989 on a training exercise. Luckily I never was called on to do it for real.

  3. It's not Christmas without homemade cinnamon rolls from the Ann Sather's recipe. Here they are fresh out of the oven, just glazed and ready for our holiday brunch.

My great-grandfather Sven was born in southeast Sweden.

Beloved of any Northside resident of Chicagoland, Swedish-inspired Ann Sather's has hosted many a family gathering, nurtured many a gay boy recovering from a dance-until-dawn boystown ramble.

    They shared their recipe

  4. Here is another Fiat 128 brochure from my collection, the 128 SL Sport Coupe. My college roommate liked my 128 sedan so much, he bought one of these and drove it for years.

Also pictured, the one ad I've found for this car (that one is a repost, I've shown it before.)

  5. Remembering legendary DJ Jim Ladd today, on the anniversary of his sudden death last December.

He was amazing, with encyclopedic knowledge of rock and musicians. Jackson Browne spoke at the 2005 dedication of his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

I knew him through SiriusXM's "Deep Tracks" station, but LA, and Tom Petty, knew him as "The Last DJ."

  6. I'm having coffee on the terrace at our community center while our girls use the the fitness center.

They chose the site for the terrific view of the San Jacinto Mountains to the west. The only exceptions to the "exeriscaping only" rule are a few patches of lawn in shared areas and this one water feature, fed by wells on the property.

70F (21C) on December 1st is why 120 degrees in August is not a burden.

I was so heartened by this, I just signed up for a monthly membership with Vox.

Chachra reminds us to work hard to make the pie bigger, not to keep fighting over who get a bigger share of an increasingly smaller pie.

Abundance kills anger and fear and hopelessness It feeds equality. It's FDR's "Freedom From Want."

This is an important discussion I hope we'll continue.

  8. I just listened to historian Doris Kearns Goodwin bring the election into historical perspective, and she reminded me why I have faith in history and the American people. Her 10 min segment starts about 30 minutes in.

(This summer I read her book "The 1960s, an Unfinished Love Story" an inside perspective of JFK and LBJ. TL;DR how they made real some of the most progressive ideas of the 20th century)

  12. I went to the Rancho Mirage city hall on Friday, dropped my ballot and Craig's. We'll get email when our votes are counted

Next, one more donation to Dems!

Early voting frees up space in line on election day, and frees up valuable campaign resources to get out the vote!

We're in flippable US House district CA-41, and I was proud to vote for Will Rollins to replace the he-who-shall-not-be-named TFG puppet in that office now.

  17. I'm reading -- the new book telling of the involvement she and her husband, Dick Goodwin, had with JFK and LBJ in the 60s. She recalls this Doyle Dane Bernbach campaign ad for Johnson during the 1964 election, 60 years ago. Goldwater had talked of tactical nukes and "joked that a nuclear weapon be lobbed into the men's room at the Kremlin." Powerful images against right-wing extremism. Kearns Goodwin: "Goldwater would never recover."

There is a CA Democrat in a (tight, winnable) race for the House: CA-41. It's gay former prosecutor #WillRollins who only lost to odious MAGA-ist Ken Calvert by 5000 votes in 2020. CA-41 includes #PalmSprings and #RanchoMirage , where I live

I've donated to Will and to Biden, and will continue to do so. Schiff ran vicious anti-Katie Porter ads to secure his spot. I will hold my nose and vote for him, but no $.
