  2. We are used to hot weather in the southern California desert, so today's high is manageable. But it's a normal high temperature for July, it feels like our cooler late winter days have been snatched away!

  3. The rain (and mountain snow,) California's first atmospheric river event of the winter season, is just starting here in the desert east of Los Angeles. Just before it began, I caught this panning shot of the mountains wreathed in clouds.

  4. The front that has brought lots of rain to California coastal areas today has brought dramatic skies to the desert and the Coachella Valley where we live.

This view, from our community clubhouse, is to the east. The lower, closer mountains are in full sunlight with a rainbow, while the Little San Bernardino Mountains behind them appear destined for rain .

Only a few actual drops here in Rancho Mirage.

  5. This baby on the sill of our sliding glass door doesn't know he is a threatened population.

They seem to love our neighborhood, it's not unusual to see them when we're out on the community's walking paths. Adults are about 6-8" from head to tail.

  6. We actually do have Spring in the desert. Desert native Palo Verde trees have green trunks and branches, with feathery leaves. This time of year they're covered with tiny yellow flowers. There is a grove of them on our community's exit drive, making a bright yellow understory for the palms.

    For detail, the
2nd photo is a baby Palo Verde in our front yard.

  7. Good morning, Mastodon-land!

The San Jacinto Mountains are particularly majestic today, wreathed in clouds and dappled shadows. There is a sundoggish cloud rainbow near the peak.

It's 58F, 14C, a typical February day here in the Coachella Valley of California (taken from the street in front of our home in Rancho Mirage).
Palm Springs is at the base of the mountains, about 12 miles west of us.

  8. I'm having coffee on the terrace at our community center while our girls use the the fitness center.

They chose the site for the terrific view of the San Jacinto Mountains to the west. The only exceptions to the "exeriscaping only" rule are a few patches of lawn in shared areas and this one water feature, fed by wells on the property.

70F (21C) on December 1st is why 120 degrees in August is not a burden.

  9. Update from our home in Rancho Mirage. We're fine, we are on high ground. The wind arrived with a new rainstorm about 10 minutes ago

Power has been flickering a little. It's 4:38 pm on Sunday afternoon. The rainfall total for the last 24 hours is 2.08 inches (a normal YEAR in the desert is about 4 inches of rain).
