  1. I'm not sure whether something similar could work in France, or whether there's still enough time in Spain, but one interesting aspect of Lula's victory in Brazil was a WhatsApp channel led by congressman André Janones that grew to more than 10 million followers in just three weeks.

The channel gave supporters concrete tasks, encouraged them to take to the streets, and, perhaps most importantly, kept morale high by reinforcing the belief that victory was still possible.

The goal was to mobilize people to engage with undecided voters, as well as those who had abstained or cast blank or invalid ballots in the first round.

I think it's an interesting example of how online mobilization can translate into real-world political action, rather than simply generating likes and shares.

It also illustrates how political movements can become less dependent on Big Tech's algorithms, even while using one of their platforms.

  2. I did a bare-metal install of #NetBSD today on my 2017 HP Pavilion (Intel/Nvidia) laptop using a USB-connected 500 GB HDD.

It took a couple passes before I figured out that I had to manually remove the MBR on the target drive for the installation to boot.

Then it was easy because I've done a bunch of practice installs.

    On this laptop, everything works:

    WiFi
    X11
    Sound (and volume buttons)
    Brightness buttons
    YouTube video plays great

On par with #OpenBSD, better than #FreeBSD on this hardware

  3. I added this update to my Eero/Ubiquiti post:

UPDATE, 2:32pm ET 10/26/26: The issue with Ubiquiti’s site was that its autocorrection of my address (adding “Township” after my town name) then made it reject my address. When I corrected that, Ubiquiti’s form changed my street’s suffix from “Ct.” to “CT,” which again failed to pass their validation. When I fixed that by hand, I was able to check out. I hope their web form validation isn’t a harbinger of their hardware quality.

  8. I don't know what survives this current phase of the software industry.
I SUSPECT services (yes like Stylo.Bot) which provide safety barriers around AI generated apps will be required. I don't think they exist yet - I haven't seen anyone design one for a desktop app yet for example. 'Secure Harnesses'.

  9. I wish I could block The Columbian from search results as I try to research my voting ballot options because fuck them and their fucking paywall on fucking everything

  11. I ordered a hardware random number generator from the US (I'd have preferred the UK or EU but couldn't find the right product).

So far the only thing random about it is the delivery path. It's going all over the US and just sitting in depots.

Americans pride themselves on their commerce abilities but they don't seem able to ship much outside their country.

Three weeks so far. I have a project launch waiting on this.

  12. I finally had a *really* good use case for iPhone Mirroring today, where the iPhone version of an app has a feature the Mac version just doesn't (Voice Memos, Transcription). Getting it working was relatively easy, but actually using it is weird. I found the Home button (thanks to Google), but I'm still not sure how to do searches. i click the search field, but it doesn't activate (there's no on screen keyboard OR accepting hardware keystrokes).

This doesn't seem a great product to me. #Apple

  13. I use pre-made niobium ear wires for the copper earrings I make. I used to be able to buy them from my regular supplier, Rio Grande, but they stopped selling them. So now I buy from an AZ company called Reactive Metals, which sells metals like niobium and titanium.

The problem: they have regular business hours (M-F, 8:15-4) and do not have online ordering. I FINALLY remembered to call and place an order today.

  16. I saw Smashing Pumpkins last night on their Rats in a Cage tour celebrating 30 years of one of my all time favorite albums, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.

It was an awesome show with beautiful visuals, and the band really rocked.

  17. I really gotta get a web site up with some kind of satisfying finality, because this place ain't cohost, and while i love writing longform thoughts, microblogging is the worst place to do that

  18. I wonder if I should learn or . I know a little bit of both (about 15 minutes practice a day for a week on each topic), but I wonder which one is a more important thing to learn. What do you think?

  19. "I cannot let you do this," Chekov said, keeping his phaser pointed directly on the man that resembled him, maybe his father, with the age gap.

"As if you can stop me; you are not even of the Psi Corp," Bester said in contempt.

  20. I enjoy the time that we spend together.

  21. I scanned the public IP of my home router - surprise, I have 2 ports open! My router decided to enable UPnP after a firmware update. And it turned out that Syncthing is not as LAN-only as I thought.

I fixed it, but I also thought about other problem. Let's call it a paradox of privacy: using Syncthing instead of OneDrive or GDrive keeps my personal files to myself, but also makes my devices easier to fingerprint.

  22. "I know it was wrong to hit Emily. I knew the moment I did it. But I don’t think I’m badly behaved. I live my life, desperately trying to make other people feel at ease. To show them I’m normal. [...] And on days like today, when I fail, I hate myself. More than anyone else can hate me."

I feel the last sentence a lot, but notice again that this masking thing isn't my experience.

I never tried to make anyone feel at ease. I'd never know HOW! I just try to get along.

  23. I'm alright. It feels like we've been apart for a lifetime.

  24. I have been meaning to revisit and expand the thing I wrote about how generative AI is fascist because it intrinsically de-contextualises and aestheticises¹. But then there is also the other part where people love chatbots for the same reason they talk too much at meetings, especially when showing up for the first time in left-y spaces: everyone feels so damn lonely and powerless. Having a space where you are heard is so rare.

It’s Benjamin’s: “Fascism attempts to organise the newly created proletarian masses without affecting the property structure which the masses strive to eliminate. Fascism sees its salvation in giving these masses not their right, but instead a chance to express themselves. The masses have a right to change property relations; Fascism seeks to give them an expression while preserving property. The logical result of Fascism is the introduction of aesthetics into political life.”

… but more atomic and more melancholic. The masses haven't dissolved but there is also something else.

Maybe writing out the first part will help me resolve the second part?

[1: And if that doesn't make sense … that's exactly why I have been meaning to revisit and expand the thing I wrote :blobcatfingerguns:]

On the back half of my hike I stumbled on this snake basking in the sun in the middle of the trail. It startled me. I startled it. The difference is that it doesn't have to figure out how to bill health insurance later today.
