De Maghreb in de Late Oudheid (2)
Het Byzantijnse fort van Madauros[Tweede van zeven blogjes over de arabisering van de Maghreb. Het eerste was hier.]
Ik eindigde mijn vorige blogje over de Maghreb in de Late Oudheid met de onderwerping van het Vandaalse koninkrijk door de Byzantijnse generaal Belisarius in het jaar 533. Hij sloot een verdrag met een Berber-koning genaamd Massonas, die lijkt te hebben geheerst vanuit Altava in het noordwesten van het huidige Algerije. De twee partijen werkten in de volgende jaren samen, onder meer tegen andere groepen Berbers. De Byzantijnen bouwden een reeks forten. In Tunesië is te denken aan Sufetula (Sbeitla), Mactaris (Makhtar) en Ammaedara (Haïdra). In Algerije gaat het om Theveste (Tebessa), Madauros (M’daourouch), Lambaesis (Tazoult), Thamugadi (Timgad), Sitifis (Sétif) en Tipasa. Meer naar het westen ontbreken de forten, omdat het gebied in handen was van de bevriende Berbers van Altava.
Demografische neergang
Wie die forten ziet, valt op hoe klein ze zijn. Ze zijn ook grotendeels gebouwd uit gerecycled ouder bouwmateriaal, vaak de enorme stukken natuursteen waarop inscripties hadden gestaan. (De Byzantijnse forten zijn een paradijs voor epigrafen.) Omvang en bouwmateriaal zullen wel samenhangen met de demografische neergang in Late Oudheid. Het meest opvallende aspect daarvan is de pest-epidemie die uitbrak in 541, maar de neergang had al eerder ingezet.
Eén van de gevolgen is de afname van de vraag naar producten uit de Maghreb, zoals olijfolie en wijn en graan. Dat had ter plekke weer economische en sociale gevolgen. De sedentaire boeren rond de steden hadden redenen om over te schakelen op veeteelt en dus nomadisme.
Garmul
De samenwerking tussen de Byzantijnen en Berbers was niet voor eeuwig. Er is wel beweerd dat het Byzantijnse Rijk steeds Griekstaliger werd, waardoor de Berbers (die naast hun eigen taal vooral Latijn spraken) afstand begonnen te voelen, maar ik weet niet zeker of dit waar is. Feit is dat we lezen over conflicten, zoals dat met een zekere Garmul. De door de Spaanse chroniqueur Johannes van Biclaro gegeven informatie is beknopt:
Generaal Gennadius verpletterde in Africa de Mauri, en overwon in de strijd de levensgevaarlijke koning Garmul, die al een leger van drie eerdere Romeinse aanvoerders (duces) had verslagen, en doodde die koning met het zwaard.noot Johannes van Biclaro, Kroniek, jaar 578.
Die eerdere generaals waren verslagen in 570 en 571, Gennadius’ repressie dateert van 578 en leidde tot de onderwerping van de Mauri, maar er zijn geen aanwijzingen voor hernieuwde Byzantijnse fortenbouw. Vermoedelijk werd het koninkrijk Altava opnieuw een bondgenoot, en wel op voor Constantinopel gunstige voorwerpen.
Het Exarchaat van Karthago
Gennadius bleef in de Maghreb achter als exarch, wat zoiets betekent als “bestuurder van een buitengewest”. Vanuit Karthago regeerde hij over de Byzantijnse bezittingen en controleerde hij de Berber-bondgenoten. Dat waren er meer dan alleen het koninkrijkje rond Altava. In mijn vorige blogje noemde ik een dux en imperator Masties die in de Vandaalse tijd in het noordoosten van Algerije regeerde over Romeinen en Mauri, en misschien heeft zijn staatje op een of andere wijze overleefd. Ook elders is het bestaan van post-Romeinse heersers gedocumenteerd, maar vaak gaat het om de vermelding van één leider met een Berber-naam die dan door de Byzantijnse legers wordt verslagen. Feit is: we hebben weinig informatie.
Zoals ik het zie, verbleven er rond het Byzantijnse Exarchaat diverse groepen Berbers, die op verschillende manieren een nomadisch leven leidden, en die op variërende manieren waren verbonden met (en zich zo nu en dan keerden tegen) de exarch in Karthago. Zo was het al eeuwen, en de voornaamste verschillen waren dat de Latijnsprekende Romeinse overheid inmiddels een Griekssprekende Byzantijnse overheid was, dat de steden door de demografische neergang kleiner waren geworden en dat het handelsvolume was afgenomen. Evengoed functioneerde de samenleving nog altijd en waren er nieuwbouwprojecten, zoals het gebouw in Sfax waarover ik een paar jaar geleden blogde.
Migraties
Ik voeg nog toe dat de Berbergroepen, zoals alle nomadische groepen, fluïde waren. De naam Laguatan, die we rond 400 na Chr. aantreffen in het oosten van het huidige Libië, duikt anderhalve eeuw later veel westelijker op. Er lijkt onder de nomaden een soort beweging te zijn geweest vanuit Tunesië naar de vruchtbare Hautes Plaines van Algerije, vanuit westelijk Libië naar de vrijgekomen gebieden in Tunesië en vanuit oostelijk Libië naar de vrijgekomen gebieden in westelijk Libië.
Anders gezegd: de Arabieren volgden gebaande wegen toen ze naar de Maghreb kwamen. Daarover gaat het volgende blogje.

Last composition of the year turns out to be a salvage job: after recording in various tempi, I couldn't make them fit together, and normalized to 90 bpm. I also had to throw out my strongest theme, so we have a mood piece instead. And it's #microtonal and #justIntonation as well, if the initial multi-tempo plan hadn't been complex enough. I’ve bought—and have enjoyed—a lot of David’s work over the years but have missed the last few releases so this was a good opportunity to remedy that.

Had half expected Harry Partch to arrive at his tuning system from a mathematical or visual perspective. Instead, got a rant against music that drifts too far from spoken word and a plea for a return to 'ancient greek' musical values. Much to unpack there, but a fascinating read so far nonetheless.
