CLONK! Launch Party
He doesn’t release tunes all that often but when he does they clonk! This Friday, 17th October, @axwax is not only releasing a new tune, he’s also hosting a launch party and we’re all invited! 🥳🪩🕺💃
With two different versions (one coproduced by @socool who recently sat down for a chat with us, and one downtempo version feat. DJ Soo) the new track is called ‘CLONK! and has also been remixed by a number of AxWax’s musical heroes: @ahihi, @bazkie, @defaultmediatransmitter, @ordosmarkzero and @skysonix.
The main vocal sample in the tune (“Destroy Him”) is a cheeky nod to @retrostrange at Radio Free Fedi Fest in July this year. AxWax caught the sample on one of the Star Man (Super Giant) movies they were airing, possibly ‘Attack from Space’.

With a touch of The Stranglers about it “Sea Lady” (originally written in 1992) is a song of longing for something that everyone said was imaginary. It is one of four expertly remastered tracks from Futzle‘s South of El Dorado EP, which now comes with a special fifth, previously unheard bonus track! I must admit that despite the song title I would have still been erroneously singing along, “Seeya later”, had it not been for Deborah sharing the lyrics next to the song synopsis. -Hearing lyrics wrong seems to be the one thing in life I’m a master of!

Apparently news about ΑΛΓ is scarce so savour this nugget: There is also a “Nimègue 2“, both tracks featuring on the EP “Monde”, and the two songs were originally written as a single piece. In the composition ΑΛΓ was trying to get away from a natural tendency towards darkness and introspection to create a lighter, punky tune with a touch of humour. It worked …to begin with, but as the track went on the mood began to revert to type. As such Aarn0 decided to split it in two, giving the first half the freedom to fly free of the weight of the dramatically epic second half.

Mmmm I love the smooth beats in this, complimented perfectly by the Dutch rap. It just flows so well. Takes me back into Cold Water Music. Konstrukto’s is conscios rap – messages of positivity, delivered atop soulful and jazzy melodies. Also an illustrator and animator, he has made some great videos for some of his releases. This track comes from the album “Schwung!”.

It was hard to choose which track from AxWax’s recent “CLONK!” release to include here, such is the quality of all seven versions/remixes of the track. In the end I slammed a bamboo cane down on the release and it landed on Ordos Mk.0’s aptly named Liquid Heaven Mix. The live-streamed launch party for the EP was fantastic – with quality visuals to boost. If you missed it do give yourself the chance to listen to all seven tracks, which are downloadable for free.

Radio Free Fedi returns to action for a one off festival this month: RFFF. It runs throughout July and we broadcast a special live NHAM mixtape show at the beginning of the event, showcasing acts performing live at the festival. I remember first listening to this when it came out last year and being utterly blown away. It was one of those moments – headphones on, active listening – I was overcome and transported in my head to a huge theatre surrounded by an orchestra playing the track. It’s part of the Cities EP containing four very different tracks all well tied together by the theme of living in (or not living in) cities. The EP is an absolute triumph. sgrow is one of Norweigan soundscape artist Kristoffer Lislegaard’s projects, collaborating with his wife Vilde Ilkama Nupen. They made four releases between 2013 and 2019 of which Growing pains was on the ultimate one, Circumstance II. Since then Kristoffer has done some fantastic stuff both in collaboration as Øy and his solo work. Most recently he released the live set of his performance when he open for Autechre in Oslo.

A little earlier this year bgm put out the video for this track, shot some 10-15 years ago, and it moved me to tears. Sorry You Died was about his family cat. He thought it would be a good idea to record the acoustic guitar in a boathouse, sitting on a gas can, swatting at mosquitoes, for “atmosphere”. Calin Dica said the baroque cello melody came by itself over a rather classical harmonic progression and that the lyrics were inspired by a good friend who could have become a lover in another arc! Microcontrollers and boards in place of humans and their orchestral instruments. Each board connected to a central MIDI distribution aided by Raspberry Pis and another nano-tech. Sound complex? It’s all explained in a lot more detail here. Lo-Fi Orchestra has performed many classical pieces including The Flight of the Bumblebee and Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture but if you watch the Peertube video I’m sure you’ll agree that this Christmas piece is even more perfectly suited to this set up as the boards flash bright lights when their sound plays, creating a fitting festive lighting effect.
@diyelectromusicMans1 – Freezing Rain
Another one found on Peertube, this is a reworking of the original that Mans1 released with Hometaping on the Hip-Hop Taoists Album. It features Oliver H on lead vocals with Mans1 bringing the smooth French rap. The video has some lovely stop motion in the snow.
@mans1Futzle – Weeping Melaleuca
Let’s not kid ourselves that Christmas is all about snow and cold weather. Far from it as Christmas comes just days after the summer solstice for the Southern Hemispherites. This song from Futzle centres around a type of tree native to Australia called a Melaleuca – whose red flowers fall like tinsel on the ground in the heat of the Christmas hols. Although not a true story in it’s entirety Futzle says the lyrics are still meaningful and informed by her life. Indeed the tree itself did exist until it’s life was brutally cut short in 2023. Its memory though lives forever in this beautiful song.
@futzleSive – Don Oíche Úd i mBeithil
From the red of the Melaleuca to the green of the Emerald Isle. Performed beautifully this traditional Irish carol translated as ‘That Night in Bethlehem’ sings of the night in the West Bank when Jesus was born. Sive has cleverly interwoven parts of a Palestinian folk song in to this rendition.
@sivemusicLAGRANGE POINT 6 – God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
Another traditional Christmas carol, this version was composed with the juxtaposition of utilising synths to create a medieval approach, and to great effect.

They said there would be peace on earth. This is Roberta’s electronic cover version of Greg Lake’s classic protest song at the commercialisation of Christmas. What’s not commercialised eh? Peace I guess. Shit! -That’s the answer! -If we can find a way to commercialise peace we might yet find a way to make capitalism work. (We’ll need a way to commercialise degrowth too, mind).

The sad albeit understandable announcement of the sunsetting of Radio Free Fedi hit us all pretty hard. One thing for sure is that the community we are all now part of thanks to RFF will live on. For the electronic music section of the community Pete Xylander has already begun putting together some shows for an electronic-based online station called @audiointerface so check that out if you are that way inclined. I love the atmospheric build up in this and the way it merges in to a prog rock performance. Eugene K is a poet and artist who has created a brilliant telling of William Blake’s poem.

Written for her found Fediverse family, Deborah Pickett penned a country-Christmas song and asked many of those friends to collaborate on it. Deborah says that sixths feel festive to her, and so filled the chorus with them, excluding all thirds, fourths and fifths in the process – clever as ever, as are the lyrics!

We’ve got to have a bit of shoegazey pie for Christmas! From the ursa major album released in May this year ‘three stars each’ is a lovely song from the Nebraskans. There may be nothing explicitly Christmasy about it but the twinkly jingles combined with the stars in the title make it sit well in this mix.

Arrrrgh Yeah. Pump it up. When the sun shines and the heat hazes, this classic hip hop groove is the perfect accompaniment. I only wish it were three times as long. Ricky is from Palma in Spain and this track comes from the 2023 album De Buenas a Primeras – a collection of fine, short tunes. - Key 13 – L.U.C.A.
Key 13 has such a varied bank of works it was hard to know which song to choose, but I really love L.U.C.A. Some great vocal effects combine with synthetic and natural instruments for a beautifully balanced piece. It’s a pretty telling of the story of the connected nature of us and all life on earth. - Digits – Lost Dream
If you told me this was a new Junior Boys track I’d not have any reason to doubt it. -From the soft yet authoritative vocal to the jittery electronic beeps and beats. That by the way is very much a compliment as Junior Boys are one of the favourite artists of my lifetime. - Bandstahl – I’m falling
Okay, if you’re not in a hot place right now just close your eyes and imagine being on a sandy beach in the sun with a cool breeze blowing through as you listen to this. Life’s good, isn’t it? That’s how this one makes me feel. Deep beat, luscious vocal, warm bass, I’m falling! - White Town – Timeslip
Yes, THE White Town – I told you the coolest kids reside in the Fediverse. I was a touch obsessed with Your Woman back in 1997, so finding Jyoti aka White Town in The Fediverse was a very pleasant surprise. Timeslip is a joyous-sounding, catchy number although the lyrics hint at something darker in the underbelly. - AxWax – Schrödinger’s Bonk
What is Bonk? Can you handle Bonk? Take a dive in to the Bonkwave with master-proponent of the illusive movement to find out! I’d tell you more if I knew but I’m still working Bonkwave out myself a month or so after taking my first dive in to its depths. The one thing I do know so far is that I like it! - Xylander – Hectic Life (Busy Busy Busy!)
This is truly masterful. A 50 year old tape of Xylander’s uncle and grandmother recording a message to another family member has been expertly set in to a speedy dance track. Xylander lists Squarepusher and Autechre among his influences and you can really hear it in his work. - Fastachee – Lonely Negatives
I love the way this track builds as it wakes up from the intro and moves through the gears before unearthing some rare Fastachee vocals in the second half. It’s got industrial vibes, in the electronics department, and has a real get up and go about it. - YACHT – Finger in Your Eye
Fine, jaunty, indie-pop from Young Americans Challenging High Technology – something all of us within The Fediverse are doing whether we realise it or not! I was big in to YACHT back in 2009 so to have rediscovered them via Mastodon this month was a true delight. To then catch up on everything I’ve missed in recent years and hear that they’ve not lost any of their fun, unique sound means I’m now fully back aboard the vessel! - Fräulein Verdrieslich & Torsten Torsten – Jackentaschen-Chanson
According to the deepl translation tool Jackentaschen-Chanson translates as Jacket Pocket Song. I found this version on Torsten Torsten’s Peertube account and it’s a lovely live performance by the two artists in a park on a summer’s day. Apparently they had about 50 more verses for the song they could have included. Sadly my German isn’t good enough to know what they’re singing about but the joy from the performance needs no translation. I also love that at the start of the recording you can just hear the end of Fräulein singing Caravan of Love – one of my all time fave songs. - Huge Shark – A Prayer for Rain
Just like with Kydia in the NHAM 1 mixtape a powerful voice sucks me in so deep here. On this occasion it’s that of Valerie Polichar of Huge Shark. She wrote this song back in 1990 in reference to the droughts experienced in California at the time due to the early onset of climate change. The fact that things have only got worse since make this record continue to stand out. I want future generations to live lives where they can enjoy the best things in life such as Valerie’s voice and music without being impeded by the dystopian effects of climate change we’re hurtling toward. In order for that to happen we need to make radical changes to the way we live at present, and quickly! - The Liquid Clear – Sociate
Just like in last month’s mixtape the closing track is one to leave you hanging there, yearning for more. Experimental producer Bree D aka The Liquid Clear makes sumptuous sounds from Washington. Sociate is just one of many examples that can be found on her Bandcamp profile. It carries a spacey, nostalgic vibe complete with Joy Orbison style break down. Enjoy!

What Community Looks Like – RFFF25 Review
It’s always the way when you go to a festival, isn’t it? – That it takes a good while to acclimatise back in to normality again. Well now that the dust has settled and we’re back to at least some sense of normality let’s look back on the amazing month of July, the whole of which was set aside for Radio Free Fedi Fest 2025.
We must begin by showing our gratitude to @radiofreefedi for coming back from the sunset to galvanise the community once more, and again being a beacon for highlighting the depth of talent in the Fedi music scene. Huge appreciation to the Hamster for powering that wheel all month long.
The Festival kicked off way back on the first of July with a typically outstanding performance from @shannoncurtis and @hilljam in which they performed their 80’s Kids live show especially for us. Fresh off touring the show they recreated the set from their basement, including the full light show and treating us to insights in to their workings with a Q+A after the set. The pair are without doubt masters of their crafts, and they combine those crafts perfectly to give us maximum joy. The 80s Kids tour is going on the road again soon. Speaking of Q+A, the next day was our turn to get on the stage. @sknob and I (@ethicalrevolution) answered some of your questions in between presenting my 13th NHAM mixtape, which was put together as a showcase of RFFF25 – 12 songs from 12 of the artists that were to perform over the month. I was so grateful to sknob for his expertise in putting together the technical and aesthetic aspects of the show, and of course for the moral support. If you missed it we did manage to record the show which you can catch up on here.
On the third day of the event Damon Thomas (@ruralgloom) performed with spoken word. I was still backstage chatting to all the groupies that had assembled from our show so I missed it but Deb was there and she said, “Damon Thomas read excerpts from his Southern Gothic written works, in his gentle understated style, a thoroughly relaxing vignette of small-town life and growing up in the US South. We were left with images from a delightful time capsule of little people looming large in little places.”
Next to perform was @fluffy and it was a performance the likes of which I’d never seen before: A fully blown VR performance in which the Fluffy that we saw was an animated critter on an animated stage in an animated venue with an animated guitar! The set is available on demand and you can follow Fluffy to be notified of future live performances, as we were informed that this critter from Seattle performs relatively regularly.
Then came @lislegaard who was an absolute delight. Kristoffer totally took us down in to full relaxation zone before belting us out with the booms and glitches in a really epic performance which combined amazing sounds and visuals. You can catch the show again on Kristoffer’s Hyper8 page. And he’s another to keep an eye on for future streams.
Next up was my NHAM co-conspirator @sknob. The master songwriter’s gig from the Rugged Scrublands somewhere in the South of France is also available on demand. In it he opened up by playing through his current EP, “Cities” before going through a rendition of some of his bonkwave tracks and playing covers of other Fedi musicians including @futzle, @keefmarshall and even 8 year old me!
The baton was then passed to Fedi superstar and regular streamer @meljoann who combined wit, wizardry and wickedness (in the good sense!) despite having to take a call from her therapist (former talk show host, Dr Synergy Myers) during the show. This set wasn’t recorded but Meljoann is prolific when it comes to livestreaming. Just follow @relay to keep in the loop with future performances.
On July 12th Pulu (@ahihi) put on a show-stopping performance of beautiful sounds and quality beats in an incredible method of performing via multi-computer set up on a balcony by some woods in Helsinki. Rather than try to go in to the detail of the music production, for which I still can’t quite fathom, you can check it out for yourself via the recording of the stream. One particularly incredible moment in the show for me was when the bird song samples were being played and outside my own window behind me real birds were echoing the same calls to give me proper surround sound!
The next night @jimpurbrick defrosted his Moogs for Remember Glaciers’ first 100% solar powered telling of Duncan Porter’s tale of two visits to the Rhone glacier. An eye opening storytelling of the demise of glaciers for many in the lobby. While this particular show was not recorded, there is a version available from his Gravitons Festival 2024 set.
As we came towards the middle of the month Grüezi Sexgott (@DePemig) moved their weekly live streamed jam session over to the Radio Free Fedi stage as we dimmed the lights, heightened the haze and mellowed in to a smooth and funky improv set from the accomplished four-piece. They play every Tuesday at 9pm Swiss time.
Then came @alexglow. What a performer. Alex was so relaxed; at times moving; always fun; with quite beautiful playing; and being very clever – all rolled in to one concert. She played covers and originals, taking requests too, of any song so long as it was about space. It’s something she does on Sunday’s over on spacesongsunday.com
I tried but largely failed to tune in to @axwax whilst on a coach. Fortunately it was made available to catch up on. With graphics that bounced in time with the music and an impressive rack of machines, synths and a big red button AxWax powered through some classic acid, techno, hip-hop and of course bonkwave. Donning his 80s Kids t-shirt in the sweltering Spanish heat, the ever delightful Axel played an encore of 20 minutes or so after the main set while we awaited the second act of the night…
Back home by this point I was able to enjoy @Jazzaria from the comfort of my own sofa. We watched an animated keyboard playing the notes that were improvised from prompts given in the lobby which included 80s sitcoms, nightly news, small mammals in fancy hats, tramping cats and 80s detectives. It was quite something seeing vague concepts being brought to life by the sounds of a keyboard.
Then on July 23rd we witnessed @conniptions being brilliant with a large 4-stringed instrument, brilliant with a small 8-stringed instrument, brilliant with a regular 6-stringed instrument and even being brilliant on the magic trumpets. All on his actual birthday – inviting all of us festival goers to his party of left-field anti-folk – as we bopped along and celebrated with him. Next came ‘A Christmas in July Wasted’ with Deb Pickett (@futzle). The set up was as smooth as the performance as Deb beamed across the globe from Victoria, Australia. With lyrics and chord progressions often too clever for me Deb went down like a plump chap in a red suit down a chimney – with a bang and full of treats and gifts!
With the month drawing out we turned our gaze over to Toronto in Canada where @bgm performed from a basement with a low ceiling. Sadly he was too good that the hour whizzed by in an absolute flash. A highly accomplished musician and video maker, bgm did not disappoint.
What was disappointing, however, was that this was to be my last show. I had to leave the festival early for other commitments so I hand you over to sknob to run through the final three events…
Thanks Sam. Well, I’m not used to this exercise, but I’ll try to do the artists justice.
After a few words of introduction, Calin Dica aka @akash literally blew our socks off as soon as we heard the first notes of his spectacular guitar playing. Expertly jumping from his guitar to his electronic gizmos with dizzying precision and grace, and even surprising the audience with some epic guitar solos, Calin Dica/akash treated us to a barrage of pure energy in song form. I think it’s safe to say we were all flabbergasted when he told us this was the first time he’d ever performed his music in a solo set. Catch up on demand.
What can I say about nightmother aka @alisynthesis. I discovered her music only recently thanks to Sam, and to say that I’m a fan would be the understatement of the year. In fact I probably shouldn’t be allowed to review her set at all, but here we are, and here we were, teleported into her beautiful studio filled with too many knobs and dials to count (and a couple of totally oblivious dogs on a comfy looking couch). If you think you know synthesizers and electronic music, think again. The sounds that Alison conjures out of her machines is glorious, as is her singing. In fact, the chat which is usually full of wisecracking banter was stunned into silence on several occasions. I do have one complaint though. The set was way too short. Alison, we want more! Synth music can also be gloriously harsh and furious. Just ask @controlfreak. Sorry, I don’t speak genres, but this absolutely ferocious set (showcasing the darker side of oontz as he eloquently puts it) was exceptional not only for its stunning and sometimes disturbing visuals, but also for its uncompromising original pieces old and new, its spectacular remixes of @shannoncurtis, and for its real drums played on an actual, real, physical drum kit! And when you thought you couldn’t be any more delightfully surprised, controlfreak got up and actually sang for us, well, beautifully (if he’ll pardon the expression), bringing RFFF25 to a perfect conclusion. Back to you Sam.
We’ve said it before, we’ll say it again, and again. We’re forever grateful for Radio Free Fedi and this month was a perfect exemplifier as to why. It’s about the @music and the artists but it’s not just about the music and the artists, it’s about the community. And this, THIS, showed just what community looks like.

Comfy Collaborations is a collection of six co-productions by artists who connected through Radio Free Fedi:
Key 13 – The Space Between the Sea and the Sky (Default Media Transmitter Remix)
Starting with atmospheric ambient drones swirling around your head and steadily building, the track breaks out into some lovely crunchy rhythm, this version of Key 13’s track from Default Media Transmitter has a dystopian futurist feel about it (or does that just make it current idk?), Stuttering, echoing electronic drums joined by deep synth drones, but rather than stay in darker moods, the track sounds optimistic with some lovely twists and turns, becoming ever more dreamy and curious as the track progresses, culminating in a beautiful, soulful, bleepy breakdown. The drums return and all is well with the world. Perhaps there is hope for humanity after all…
Futzle ft. Aelyth from sideSister – Leave The Light On
An old time swing rhythm is quite the style shift from the previous track but the sense of optimism prevails and the opening line ‘I have to stand up, I have to be strong everyday’ is a sentiment I can certainly relate to. Aelyth’s vocal shines through on this track with electric piano and groovy tremolo’d guitar sounds. It makes me think of something Tarantino would use alongside some ultra violence, not that this track sounds at all aggressive, the total opposite in fact but I hope that helps portray the atmosphere of the sound? Well at least it does to this listener and it’s lovely song. Hopeful, optimistic and self affirming. Very cool.
C.Circo and sknob – You Are Not Alone
There’s something reminiscent of The Black Dog here in the way electronic textures are used to create a sentimental feel. The vocal sounds like it could be lifted from something very old, but it’s processed in such a way to give a contemporary feel “You are far away but you are not alone” There’s so much going on here, pitched vocal samples meet acoustic guitar and lovely Mellotronesque synth pads, cool drum machine programming. A gorgeous, intriguing piece of music. The sort of piece you keep finding new elements to on repeated listening. Something I feel compelled to do. Lovely stuff.
Matt Young & Edvards – Shame
A big bold opening with an 80s feel, not so much in the big snare, big hair kind of way, this is more reminiscent of The Cure to these old ears (hold on, didn’t I just say not big hair?! Damn, that will serve me right for trying to be clever). Another swing rhythm but this time with big, bold plonky piano keys with an open, chunky feel. This song tells a story of childhood mischief and a poor little robin being shot. Some childhood regret evident for this misdemeanour, ‘the things we do when we’re young and dumb, the things we wish weren’t true’ is certainly very relatable. There’s a sort of Tom Waits quality to the production with some nice story telling to boot. Poor little robin!
Secret Deal – Think Twice
At first listen I thought Philip Oakley had appeared in my shed! Lush, warm synth chords and a strident vocal reminiscent of The Human League but as the song progresses, more modern sounds come into focus with swooping, rising synths and funky guitar with a nod to Daft Punk. I should add an apology here, as a music maker myself, I’ve been critical of music journalists comparing work to others but, as my first music review demonstrates, it is a handy short hand to describe the sound. So apologies if I piss off the musicians involved! This is a great, sunny, good-time feeling song: funky disco with pulsing synth lines. Very nice.
Default Media Transmitter/Xylander – That One Day
This sounds big from the get go, crunchy atmospheric synths joined by a low pitched computerised vocal, there’s a reel sense of doom here. Dark, industrial, electronica with a dystopian vibe. Like a modern day Pink Floyd a la Welcome To The Machine. It paints a picture of desolate, dusty landscapes, maybe the last thing heard before the planet is devoured by an ever expanding sun? I’m not sure but I am sure I like it. Very cool.
