nice walk down memory lane. I believe my earliest experience with MacOS was System 7.5.3 so a little past the revelation of 7.0 but still far enough back that I remember stuff like Conflict Catcher, using AppleScript for everything, the controversy of Copland and the sad reign of Gil Amelio before Jobs returned.

Gotta say I was a weeency bit disappointed when I booted Fedora 43 into Linux kernel 7.0.4 and wasn't greeted with THIS... 😁

One good thing about the never-ending list of UI regressions in the new #MacOS (eg https://tonsky.me/blog/tahoe-icons/) – is it's making one of my New Year resolutions to 'this year learn driving or Linux' seem realistic.
I've always told myself it's helpful to use leading, well-funded UI/UX to learn from it (eg, am currently setting up an online shop for our new books on WooCommerce not Civi). But for the first time since starting with #System7, there's a MacOS UI I'm praying I never have to 'upgrade' to.

The way icons are going on macOS, can we at least have our System 7 icons back, but remade in 512x512 pixels?

Who remembers #Kaleidoscope for the #Mac #System7 from back in the day? https://web.archive.org/web/20110928000634/http://kaleidoscope.net/
It makes me feel really old… 👴 -

It's nice to see users here with old System 7 era icons as avatars. The icon style for System 7 is really unique since I can recognise them instantly.

@Ashedryden Would #System7 #HighPlainsDrifter fit the bill? (I would hope that nearly everything System 7 / 777 would fit this, actually)

@kalleboo @me_ What always made me wonder (not having programmed System 6/7 back in the days): There _were_ applications that handled memory allocation dynamically (e.g. some versions of Graphicconverter), and some text editors where I forgot the names, where it was _not_ necessary to adjust the memory allocation for an program in the Finder manually.
This dynamic memory API/functionality capability seemed to be added to System 7 back then. It always occured to me that RAM Doubler was a cure for programs that didn’t use newer APIs but the “old” pre System7 way of allocating memory fixed through settings in the Finder.
But, this is obsevation is deduction and guessing. Would be great to read here from someone with actual knowledge of the memory manager of System 7.
Perhaps @Cdespinosa can help or reach out?

Search my computer for "Mac Paint" ... it suggests Wikipedia.
Search the internet for "mac paint internet archive" ... it emulates it!

Get a low power #amd64 box? bc too many FOSS projects are still not platform independent & x86 only v.v
Optimize to run many VMs?
Maybe can run #android in VM and run banking, insurance, and other apps there? Otherwise maybe get an used M1 mac and run the #iOS apps? perhaps some <100 euro android phones will do as well? otherwise get an iPad mini and use that for the next 5-6 yrs
Maybe set up a #FileServer (#NAS?) maybe even network boot? and perhaps even a #Postgresql database? Is having SQL DB available on the local network going to be useful? What about other databases?
