  1. @drahardja but aren’t Hindenburg Research tooting their own horn here? They take a short position, and tank the stock by suggesting malfeasance? Conflict of interest?

  2. I’ve been watching some sales on Hagerty’s.

This lovely looking 1985 Mercedes-Benz 380 SL caught my eye. They seem to typically sell for $10-20K and up, depending on mileage and condition.

  3. @domenick the word “strong” might not be the most appropriate, since they are only targeting 70K sales this year, which makes the Bolt something of a niche product. Much bigger numbers than that are required to make any meaningful impact.

    #ChevroletBolt #EV

  4. @DenOfEarth @Mark: Missed it, too, as it had no hashtag, especially not #WeirdCarMastodon. I'm adding the condition to not have to think about climate consequences as otherwise it's no fun…

  5. @SteveInVentura It’s possible that Mercedes-Benz may fail to meet these expectations. They’re already dialing back. BMW may succeed, however, given the aggressive leasing options on some models already.

Volkswagen botched their launch initially, but may catch up.

Surprised by Hyundai, given the popularity and excellent press response to the #Ioniq5, #Ioniq6 and #KiaEV6.

A lot could change in the next five years. Either way.

  6. #Stellantis CEO #CarlosTavares will leave in 2026.

The darling of the automotive industry, he revitalized #Peugeot, including the successful takeover of GM Europe, which became profitable almost immediately. Something GM had failed to do after 100 years.

In 2023, Stellantis was one of the most profitable automakers anywhere, beating BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, VAG, and Tesla.

Everything soured in 2024, especially in the 🇺🇸.

    From: @theverge
    flipboard.com/@theverge/tech-n

  7. @vwdasher hard to say. Cheap cars are a very tough market, and that is the market that #CarlosTavares of #Stellantis has assigned to the #Citroën brand.

The C3 looks amazing, but how does it feel to be in and drive?! 🤷‍♂️

Would Australians go for a #Dacia replacement from Citroën? 🤔

  8. @GottaLaff funny how AP describes #Stellantis as “Jeep maker”.

In the 🇺🇸, Stellantis represents Jeep, Dodge, RAM trucks and what’s left of Chrysler.

Overseas, they represent much more, having taken over GM’s 100 year loss making operations in Europe when they were still PSA (Peugeot Société Anonyme), and making them profitable within a single year.

#CarlosTavares is the new #CarlosGhosn of Renault-Nissan fame.

Hopefully, it ends better. Much better! 🤞 🍀 🙏

  9. @richardknott this is the vision of #CarlosTavares who recently stated that #Citroën had to be a budget brand for #Stellantis to compete directly with #Dacia, the budget brand from #Renault.

Maybe channelling the thinking behind the #2CV “people’s car”? 🤷‍♂️

    #WeirdCar

  10. @SteveInVentura Tesla has only been making a profit since 2020. That profit has dropped to similar levels to other automakers in 2023. #Stellantis is currently more profitable. “Welcome to my world” opined #CarlosTavares a few months ago.

They have also abandoned the premium segment. Model S and X cars in 2023 represent less than 5% of the total.

    Tesla P/E = 60
    BMW P/E = 5
    MBZ P/E = 4
    Stellantis P/E = 3

So what is Tesla really worth?

    $212 today, or $20? 🤔

  11. @ukuku . Similarly #Stellantis is now led by #CarlosTavares, former CEO of #PSA. #Peugeot #Citroën and #DS are all offering designs that would be unexpected in the 🇺🇸. Blurring the lines between SUV, crossover and fastback station wagon designs.

He even made GM’s old European operation profitable after 100 years of losses — while promising properly affordable EV’s. We just don’t get this kind of approach on this side of the Atlantic.

  12. CW: Something from…

    @blingoali @DazzlingDamo I concur, Sir! 😊

P.S. for those of us not in Great Britain or Ireland, This is British, from the 1960’s I think. Made by what eventually became part of #ChryslerEurope, which was absorbed by #Peugeot, which is now part of #Stellantis. The Portuguese CEO of #PSA, #CarlosTavares, is now the CEO of Stellantis.

  13. @KiwiEV this is such a nightmare!

It’s possible to buy the Mirai in SoCal preowned for less than the value of the hydrogen fuel credit, but…

    1) Once the fuel credit runs out, hydrogen is VERY expensive.

    2) The stations frequently run out of hydrogen, apparently, so your Mirai is a brick until they refuel.

    3) There aren’t many stations!

    4) Has nobody figured out yet that going to the gas (hydrogen) station is NOT a fun experience?!

    #WeirdCar #FCEV #EV #HydrogenCar #Mirai

  14. @Hypx #BMW and #Toyota have been pushing the #HydrogenCar alternative for over a decade, but what have they done about it?

Elon Musk might be an a-hole, but one thing he definitely did for EV’s was 1️⃣ make them desirable, capable and fast, and 2️⃣ quickly build out an extensive network of chargers.

Meanwhile, Toyota sells the #Mirai in California and a few other places, with an ugly car, that’s slower than most mid-range to upper end EV’s, and no filling stations. 🤷‍♂️

  15. @Nir_Kahn The bar was set pretty low with the prior iterations, but of course, appreciation for design is subjective and personal.

This, to me, is the best Prius design so far, but I’d have to see it in the flesh for a definitive opinion.

    #ToyotaPrius #weirdcar

  16. @mackaj @Bluedonkey @KiwiEV It’s so embarrassing now that they don’t even put the price of the car on the website, but the base model is about $50K before taxes & fees.

However, they are offering 0% APR over 6 years (which nobody is doing), and… wait for it… a twenty-two thousand dollar rebate! 😱

Of course, within 3 years, they’ve lost 75-80% of their value used.

    #FCEV #ToyotaMirai

  17. @Hypx @ukuku There is a hydrogen fueling station about 4 miles from my house. When I looked into the #ToyotaMirai and the #HondaClarity, they were expensive (unless so heavily discounted, they were actually cheap at one point), ugly, huge, and had the performance of a Citroën 2CV. 😱

Okay, I’m exaggerating on that last point, but really, they were just big unwieldy blobs with no acceleration. I do see them regularly on local streets though.

  18. @richardknott @xtaran Peugeot tried, I think, especially with the #CitroënXM and #CitroënC6, but it didn’t go that well. Hence perhaps the #DSAutomobiles brand. 🤷‍♂️

French friends tell me Citroën had become a brand for “old guys”: people wanting a new DS, and neither the CX, XM, C5 or C6 resembled the DS sufficiently for their liking. The just wanted a new DS that looked exactly like the old DS.

  19. @Dylan Ah! The Toyota that became infamous for a recall for… wait for it… letting its wheels fall off! 😳

It’s almost as if Toyota, famous for their opposition to EV’s (which is why they made the world’s ugliest Fuel Cell vehicle as a “better” alternative), made it horrible on purpose. 🤷‍♂️

I read that all their EV names will start with bZ for “beyond zero” (emissions). 🤔

    #ToyotabZ4X

  20. @ottocrat @stuffaboutcars This article would appear to confirm that the $35K starting price #VolvoEX30 will, in fact, have Apple CarPlay! 😁

Only available for preorder in the 🇺🇸 for now. 😢

(P.S. Please note that 🇺🇸 prices do NOT include taxes & delivery etc., whereas European prices typically DO include taxes.)

    wired.com/story/volvo-ex30-ele

  21. @stuffaboutcars @ottocrat In that case, I withdraw my complaint! 😉

I had actually been looking at the #VolvoEX30, which is more within my price range and use case considerations. Love the look, love the pricing, so I’ll take a closer look now. Since there was no mention ANYWHERE on their website of CarPlay, I made some possibly erroneous assumptions. 🤷‍♂️

  22. @ukuku @vinc

From my unscientific observations, the #Ioniq5 has had a very good launch. I see plenty of others, including Mercedes-Benz EQ stuff, but the other noteworthy success seems to be #BMW, and this is borne out by Q3 delivery numbers from #CoxAutomotive.

They more or less blew the doors of every other luxury ICE brand with almost 16% of total sales as EV’s.

    * 🇺🇸 sales in Q3 2023

  23. @vinc Never thought of that before (Skoda 🆚 BMW), but their new direction is very different, to the despair of many observers.

I always consider that #BMW should ignore all criticism from anyone who:

    A) Doesn’t have the money to buy one, or,

    B) Anyone who might have the money to buy one, but doesn’t intend to anytime soon.

Personally, I’ve seen several #BMWiX now, and in real life, I like them! 😱

However, I’m more likely to buy a used #BMWi3 #EV or #BMW330e #PHEV than an iX.

  24. @wa7iut there are a few cracks in the veneer. 🤨

Incidentally, I once attended a wedding at Saint Sulpice, including an attendee in French Air Force uniform, which I was told was very much desirable for high society weddings. 🤷‍♂️

    #DanBrown #TheDaVinciCode #SaintSulpice

  25. This is the #BMWi8 coupé.

I like the lighter colored interior, but the seats seem to show signs of wear on the backrest bolster.

The exterior color is not as dramatic as some, but maybe that’s okay.

It’s a two owner car bought at auction from Florida and transported to this used car dealer in California. It did appear to have been properly serviced by BMW and Mini (the gas engine is a modified Mini unit).

  26. I am soliciting some opinions here.

    I found this late(ish) #BMWi8 from 2019.

    It has low mileage.

    It is a roadster.

It has been maintained by a BMW dealership.

The price seems about 10-20% too low, possibly.

    But…

The CARFAX says “1 owner”, but I see 3 prior sales. 😱

Also, if it has a full BMW history, why was it sold at auction and why is it hopping non-BMW dealerships from Honda, to nondescript, to Chevrolet?! 🤷‍♂️

Why isn’t it a BMW certified pre-owned sale with warranty? 🤨

  27. @autonerdery @thecarfactoids BMW was leaning heavily into their #UltimateDrivingMachine message back then, and compared to the W126, the E23 7-Series looks downright sporty. There aren’t many things (if any) that the W126 did significantly better. Comparatively speaking, it looks like a tank on wheels.
