CW: Weird Car talk!
A few weeks ago, I was at the Vancoufur car meet and slightly shy because my car, which is not anything sporty or flashy or classic or anything like that, felt a little out of place with all the cool cars around it.
I like it, a lot, but I feel like it doesn't fully align with the kind of stuff you see at car shows. It's not a "cool car", even in general "we like the weird lil cars" circles.
I said that to a friend and, much to my surprise, seconds later I was approached by this British gentleman who started asking me questions about it because this particular model is not sold in Europe and is not a popular or famous part of overseas VW culture.
That made my day, as I went on to explain what this car is and how it got here. Glad this British friend also learned something new!

For those not in the know, this car is a "Golf City", basically a mk4 Golf with new bumpers and lights to give it a more modern, but controversial, look. In Canada, it was sold as an entry model alongside the mk5.
Other than the lights and bumpers, the car is essentially a Mk4 through and through, interior and all. It comes with the 2.0 8v engine that makes 116hp.
Golf Cities were manufactured in Brazil, and over there they had not only this base model but also a GTI version and some other special trims - the car was manufactured and sold in Brazil all the way into 2014! (Brazilians didnt get the mk5 and mk6 Golfs).
Like me, this car was made in Brazil and sent to Canada. It's not fast for Canadian road standards, but it's still fun to drive, practical and I like how it looks. I gave it coilovers and a new set of wheels and stickier tires <3
Hope you enjoyed this little piece of trivia! My favourite cars are cars that real people drive. I'll listen to you talking about your Camry for hours, while having little to no patience to hear someone bragging about their cool af sports car that costs gajillions.

I went to the UPS store today, and a very nice young man — polite, well-dressed and well spoken — accosted me, and asked “is that a Mercedes-Benz with a Tesla drivetrain?”.
Well yes! Why yes it is!
“Those are super rare!”
Why yes! Yes they are! About 3,500 sold in all of the USA, or something like that.
We chatted for a few minutes, and it was lovely.

@Tiezep I think it’s quite straightforward. Probably not very expensive. Fortunately, for these engines that are basically from the 1950’s or 1960’s, so many have been sold in various iterations that part availability is not usually a problem.
The engine is virtually indestructible if maintained.
The membrane that eventually leaks (after 31 years in this case) is just a piece of silicone or rubber housed inside the component shown.

The 01/1994 K1500 was in for SMOG testing. Sadly, it failed because of the 31 year old EGR valve, so it will need a repair and retest. 😞
Under the hood, we discovered the neighborhood squirrels had been busy eating the sound deadener and having a little feast on top of the engine. Fortunately, no chewed wires or pipes. 😮💨

Just popping in to share this with you #WeirdCar #ClassicCar #FordMustang aficionados… I didn’t have time to get different angles, but you can see that there’s also an interesting vehicle on the lift, and a #BMW2002 in the bay that’s partially hidden by the Mustang.

. The outside color is not my preferred.
. The inside material is not my preferred.
. The mileage is a bit on the high side.The high mileage is nothing to these, even in gasoline guise, if properly maintained, but it just adds an element of uncertainty that takes it outside of my comfort zone.

I don’t think it will matter to me if the design is shared. What will matter is how much they improve their battery technology, as promised, and driving dynamics.

He posted a video attempting to portray himself as a self-made man with no “rich” parents to help — he graduated from Emory University with no debt, so that’s $250K right there. 🤔
Also, he was good, whereas all other freelance writers are bad. All of them. 😳
He eventually admits some “luck” was involved. 🤦♂️

@richardknott this actually looks better on the outside than the ICE equivalent. I’ve never warmed to the grille designs on Ford’s compact offerings in Europe. 🫨 👎

@dan I think I might have seen some tweets about that one that was street parked in New York City over on the 🐦 💩 before the great Mastodon migration following the takeover.
Once a vehicle is past a certain age, it can be imported. I think it’s 25 years.
Two #CitroënZX were sold on #BringATrailer in 2022-23.

There was a time when the Honda Accord sold in 🇫🇷 was actually an Acura TLX in the 🇺🇸.
I wonder if it was the same in 🇪🇸. The TLX is somewhat more compact than the Accord, but has more premium equipment.

My abiding memory is of something extremely capable, especially on B-roads in Donegal 🇮🇪 (the roads are bumpy because of the bogs, which cause sagging etc).
The engine was unstoppable. An automatic made it feel much more like a long distance cruiser that could go forever while sipping fuel.

@davidwilkins I’ve ridden in one through the vineyards of Burgundy. It’s a very plush environment. The leather quality is superb. The dampening of uneven surfaces exemplary.
The clock is lovely, if a bit gimmicky IMO. My initial thought was how well would that be doing after 10-15 years of use? 🤔
A very nice vehicle indeed. No idea of pricing and options, costs to maintain etc.

Jay also shared one of the best reviews ever of the Citroën DS IMHO…

The famous Ian from #HubNut reviewed a newer version of the previous R4 and deftly explained why it was a better car than the Citroën 2CV, but lacked the same incredible charm.

@serichards I’ve noticed a couple of trends on this front:
1) Official classic car restoration operations, for things like a Jaguar XJS etc.
2) 3D printing.
It’s really all about costs — how much it costs to make and manage inventory for limited run products; and markets — how many want to restore a particular vehicle.
You’re probably more likely to find spares for a Citroën 2CV or a DS than a Citroën C5 or an XM.

We took the #SoulEV and #i3 for a day out at the deer park yesterday* 🤣
Two cars that are quirky and go about doing the same thing in totally different ways but are an absolute hoot to drive as well as being cheapish to buy and small change to fuel.
Once again huge thanks to the Mastodon (Fediverse) #Ev peeps for opening my eyes to their benefits.
*Dogs, Grandkid and us big kids enjoyed it too.
