  1. New blog post!

Goodbye to corporate music streaming services.

In which I talk how I no longer use Spotify, but buy music as audio files, store it in my self-hosted Nextcloud, and stream it from my NAS to my laptop and phone.

    Plus some millenial nostalgia memories.

  2. @stfn yeah, apart from my server. As a software developer myself I'm looking into a threadripper system as a workstation pc. It has a huge price tag indeed, and the previous threadripper socket was already abandoned. So don't expect the same long term support for their sockets like their ryzen sockets.

If you want cheap CPUs within a server environment look at Intel Xeon systems. Especially those refurbished Xeons are a steal.

  3. @stfn @AenBleidd A few weeks ago my last client died (Raspberry Pi 4), because the sd card broke (this time it was an expensive one) and I think it's pretty common sd card break if you run #boinc 24/7.

I had #gridcoin on this client, too. It is a crypto currency, which rewards people who are crunching boinc, instead of doing useless hash calculations like #bitcoin

But because I see it as a waste of resources, I will not revive this project yet.

I might do it if I will find the time and if the community will support it, too, with the exception that I will buy only used hardware, because buying new hardware (even the solar panels and battery) for this project isn't sustainable at all.

Imagine a fleet of used mini computers / old hardware crunching for science with alternative energy. 😮

  4. New blog post!

In which I talk how I installed a self-hosted expense tracker, Actual Budget, using LXC.

The twist is that Actual Budget requires HTTPS to run at all, so I added Tailscale with their provided certificates, allowing me to reach my self-hosted service from anywhere using a secure connection.

  12. New blog post!

This time a bit of this and that.

    I crunch Folding@Home.
I (almost) finished moving my services from US servers.
    I add more self-hosted stuff.
My instance (this one) federates with a lot of other Fediverse instances.

  15. Today a short but fun exercise. I exported a model that I taught yesterday, and embedded it into a simple Django app. Now I can upload an image using a web form, and I get a result informing me if there is an passenger plane, a drone, a rocket or a fighter jet on that image. All in very little code. Impressive.

  16. So now I have a model that quite well recognizes different types of flying gizmos. One problem I have is that in my local Jupyter Lab the widgets do not work and so I cannot do an ImageClassifierCleaner. Something to debug.

My plan now is to embed the model into a Django app, because well, I like Django and I have an idea for a project.

I will be tagging those posts with the hashtag so that there is an easy way to find them all.

  17. I'm almost at the end of the second chapter of the fast.ai book/course on Machine Learning. This chapter was mostly a reiteration and extension of the first one. The goal was to create a model to recognize different species of bears and to export that model to be used in a separate application. I did not go this way because it required to set up a Microsoft Azure account, no thank you, so I downloaded a dataset of flying machines from kaggle.com/datasets/eabdul/fly

  18. I'm doing again the 1st chapter of the fast.ai machine-learning course, this time from the book, not the video (I think it's much better this way), and I set up a Jupyter Notebook instance locally with GPU support. It's fascinating yet terrifying to see my low-mid-range GPU (RTX2060) churn smoke and fire when training the models.

Make you think, if small training models use so much GPU resources, how much power is spent on real-life trainings?

  19. I will be writing here about my progress with ML, because I observed time and time again, that if I write publicly about something I'm doing, I have more motivation to continue doing it :D

  20. Here's the link to the course: course.fast.ai/Lessons/lesson1. It's free, and also you can run Jupyter Notebooks for free on the web.

I also setup and run the Notebook on my computer locally, and it was cool to see my GPU actually do some machine learning goodness.

I'm more used to writing Python in files and in REPL, but after some time I started seeing the benefits on Jupyter in this application.
