Half an hour of PUBG is enough to turn my Redmi into what feels like a different phone, so I stopped trusting my memory and started writing numbers down instead.
The routine is boring on purpose. The phone sits on a shelf for twenty minutes in a 26°C room. Case comes off, brightness locks at 50%, charging cable stays out, airplane mode goes on. After that I open the game and play the same Erangel route every single time — same landing spot, same rotation, same two firefights. Anything variable ruins the comparison, and a random hot drop will do exactly that.
Every 30 seconds I read three things. Battery temperature and the thermal status come from an adb command I keep in a plain text file, so I don't fumble with flags mid-match. I type it, glance at the output, go back to playing. Frame pacing I pull twice — at the five-minute mark and at the end — from the latency dump of the game's surface layer. I also hit the back panel with a cheap IR thermometer from 2 cm away, right above the camera bump, where the SoC actually sits.
The dump is what changed my mind. My frame counter happily reports 60 while the latency numbers say a fifth of frames missed their deadline. That gap is the whole reason I keep logging.#android #mobile #performance #software #coding #development #engineering #inclusive #community

I've been struggling with the 'my9albums' thing for a month now. It's really hard. Haven't decided yet how I will handle it but probably open a bear.blog. Music is probably the most important experience in my life.
Anyway. This is the first one definitely on the list. Not just the music, but this particular recording. There are non other to match it.
I was sick with a massive fever that was causing me to hallucinate about being strapped to the grill of a transport truck driving through the desert. I was probably about 7 or 8 years old.
A family friend arrived in the morning and dropped of a little record player and a copy of this recording. Brand new. I listened to it over and over for days.
He just left them with me and never said anything. There were a couple of other recordings which struggled for 1st record in this series, but I think this is the one.
-
Part of my problem is that I seem to have waaay more "tricky" unpublished music files than other forum posters. Recordings by me or friends. My kid's piano. Audio extracted from ancient videogames, or from the middle of movie files because I *bought* the soundtrack, but that doesn't contain the movie dialog and sound effects which we're so used to that it sounds lifeless without them. Most of these should not be uploaded to musicbrainz to match against.

"Just, like, be a browser" is like saying "just, like, be a building"
A browser has many functions. A browser can do lots of things for lots of people. Your browser needs will not necessarily be the same as others. Your experience of the web and what you value about it might not be the same as others.
"Just be a browser" implies a uniformity that doesn't match reality

Will we see new, more intense attacks on Iran this week?
As far as I understand, on 28th the Fed will, most likely, raise the interest rates, which may break the US bonds.
I read somewhere, that the US forces might strike within three days.
Next week are the Midterms, plus elections in Israel.
The third carrier group should arrive soon too.
I can't fit the puzzle, it's just a feeling, I'm not sure, if he chickens out of this one...
But on the otter hand, something doesn't match up.
Dunno, how it will affect us in Europe, but I guess, shit ain't getting cheaper.
Dunno, but I'm actually worried.but it's more of a feeling, feels different.

update on my WIP industrial ag zine:
starting in the early 1970s, the dream of scientific/industrial agriculture began to lose its shine for a variety of complicated reasons. although the dream lost some of its luster, the reality of industrial ag only intensified and globalized into the monstrous international network we have today.
as i'm picking out the pieces of text and images to include in the spread i'm calling "the end", i'm adjusting the visual style to match the visual style of the 1970s. we're done with the breathless "miracles!" of technicolor 1960s scientific ag and are now moving into a more grounded and restrained style, which i think is related to the contracting of american visions of progress that came with the oil crisis, intensification of the vietnam war, social movements exposing cracks in the american image of "abundance for all", the degradation of the american environment, and the hollowing out of cities with deindustrialization and white flight.
so below (on the left) is a little snippet of the spread - still in progress.
on the right is the cover of a 1974 USDA report called "protecting crops and the environment." i think it's an excellent example of "1970s business report" visual style.
btw, many thanks to the typography nerds who helped me identify the fonts used in some of the archival materials i'm using. "1970s business report" is such a distinct and instantly-recognizable visual style, and i wanted to evoke a bit of that. there was a lot of helvetica and i'm using "helvetica world", which is the only version of helvetica available for free on canva 🤷

I’m building EatNeat, a mobile app that helps people turn a nutrition plan into a manageable routine—before “What should I eat?” takes over the evening.
A lot of meal-planning tools focus on creating a plan. I’m focused on what comes after: remembering it, finding something practical when hunger clocks in, and tracking what you ate without turning dinner into a spreadsheet assignment.
EatNeat is still a prototype. Here’s what’s working, what I’m figuring out, and how the mascot Bitey provides moral support.
The core loop
The app is organized around a simple cycle:1. Create a meal plan or bring in an existing one.
2. See the day’s meals and get reminders at their scheduled times.
3. Browse meal ideas that match selected constraints.
4. Capture or mark a meal as eaten.
5. Review progress over the day and across recent days. The Today screen brings schedule and progress together. Meals can be marked eaten when their scheduled time arrives, and progress includes estimated nutrition metrics. The user stays in control; the app helps without handing out gold stars for lunch.
AI as a helper, not the whole app
EatNeat has AI-assisted flows for personalized plans, meal recommendations, recipes, and optional photos. Requests include selected filters and nutrition targets. Practical constraints are requirements: an “under 15 minutes” meal can’t hide a 40-minute oven step, and equipment filters should match the actual cooking method.
Food photos are optional and handled separately from meal text. Without a photo, the meal still appears with a bundled animation or illustration. The recipe shouldn’t vanish because its glamour shot is late.
The app can call configured service endpoints. During local development, some AI flows can call Gemini directly with a development environment key. A production app should route requests through an authenticated server and keep provider keys off the client.
AI nutrition values are estimates. EatNeat is not a medical tool, and the prototype does not treat a missed meal as a failure or make clinical recommendations.
Local-first state and reminders
Plans and meal logs are stored on-device with AsyncStorage. Writes are debounced and serialized, and local notifications remind users at planned meal times—because remembering breakfast shouldn’t require remembering to remember breakfast.Private meal-log photos stay on-device. If a user uploads a plan photo for parsing, it goes to the configured plan-reading service, with that made clear before upload.
The stack
The current app uses:- Expo and React Native for the mobile app
- Expo Router for file-based navigation
- TypeScript for app screens, state, services, and UI components
- React Native Paper for a small set of interface components
- Reanimated for navigation and interface motion
- AsyncStorage for local plan and log persistence
- Expo Notifications for scheduled meal reminders
What is still a prototype
The accountability feed displays sample posts and does not publish to a social service. Some preview screens use illustrative nutrition data. The app doesn’t ship a backend, so server-based AI features need a configured endpoint. For now, the social circle is supportive and fictional.I’m also breaking larger screens into focused components. The Today screen’s progress visualization and schedule calculations now live outside its route file, making the daily flow easier to evolve.
What I’m learning
The most useful decision so far: keep the basic habit loop independent of AI. Meal ideas work without generated photos; logging works without image analysis; plans can be reviewed when a service is down. A flaky model shouldn’t get veto power over lunch.AI can add convenience, but a slow request or missing key shouldn’t block the everyday action. The meal still exists even if the pixels don’t.
EatNeat is under active development. I’m currently refining the meal flow, reminders, and progress UI while building toward a more complete, privacy-conscious backend.
If you’re building a habit-focused app, I’d love to hear how you decide which parts should depend on AI and which should keep working on their own.#buildinpublic #mobile #showdev #software #coding #development #engineering #inclusive #community

In an animation explainer, the decision is whether to write words first or pictures first. I would write them together, beat by beat: one sentence for one visual change, with a pause where the motion needs room. That keeps narration from racing ahead of the image and keeps the image from waiting for words.
What matters when you choose how to pair words with pictures?
- The order of ideas: the narration should follow the order in which a newcomer meets the idea, not the order in which the team understands it.
- The match between words and visible objects: each sentence should name or imply something the viewer can see at that moment.
- The speed of delivery: the voice should not outrun the motion, because the eye needs time to find and read the picture.
- The amount of on-screen text: text on screen competes with the voice, so it should carry only what the voice does not say.
- The pauses for movement: a visual change needs a beat of silence or a short phrase, not a full sentence spoken over it.
These criteria conflict. More on-screen text speeds understanding but splits attention; more pauses slow the pace but let motion land. Choose based on the single idea the viewer must remember.
How do you judge each criterion in an animation explainer?
CriterionA useful checkOrder of ideasRead the script while hiding the storyboard; does each sentence create the next picture?Match with visible objectsPoint to the screen for every noun; if nothing is there, cut or move the sentence.Speed of deliverySpeak the line at normal pace while watching the motion; stop if you finish before the motion ends.On-screen textRemove every on-screen word that repeats the voice; keep labels and numbers the voice skips.Pauses for movementMark a short silence where an object enters, exits, or changes; if the voice fills it, the motion feels rushed.
Order of ideas. A newcomer does not need the conclusion first. If the first sentence names the benefit before the problem exists on screen, the picture has nothing to do. Start with the object or situation the viewer sees, then add the claim. For example, show a cracked pipe before saying that pressure causes leaks; the sentence then explains what the eye has already found.Match with visible objects. The voice should not describe a thing that appears later. When the sentence names a part, that part should be the part the eye is already on. If the sentence is abstract, give it a concrete visual anchor before it is spoken. A phrase like "the system fails" needs a visible failure, not a diagram of the whole system.
Speed of delivery. Fast speech can sound confident, but it leaves no time for recognition. A line that fits the motion often feels slightly slow on its own. That is usually right, because the viewer is doing two jobs at once. If you feel the urge to speed up, the sentence is probably carrying two ideas.
On-screen text. Text is not a transcript. It works best as a label, a number, or a short phrase that the voice does not repeat. If the viewer reads and listens to the same words, one of them is wasted. A label such as "step two" can guide attention while the voice explains why step two matters.
Pauses for movement. Motion is part of the sentence. A wipe, a build, or a character crossing the frame needs time to register. A pause of a few words, or a breath, lets the picture finish its thought. If the voice fills that space, the motion looks like background decoration.
Which red flags show it is the wrong choice?
- The script can be read without looking at the pictures and still make sense; that means the pictures are decoration.
- Every sentence begins with an abstract noun and no visible object follows.
- The voice keeps talking while a complex change happens on screen.
- On-screen text repeats the spoken sentence word for word.
- The ending explains the idea again in different words, as if the first pass failed.
- A single sentence names three separate objects that never appear together.
One red flag is enough to stop and revise. Fixing it early is cheaper than fixing it after the animation is built.
What should you ask before you commit?
- Can I point to the picture for the main noun in each sentence?
- Does each visual change have a moment of silence or a short phrase?
- Is any on-screen text doing a job the voice cannot do?
- Would the sequence still work if I removed half the words?
- Does the last image leave the idea in a stable, visible form?
- If I mute the video, can I still tell what each beat is about?
These questions are not a checklist to pass once. They are a way to find the sentence that is doing too much.
Frequently asked questions
Should the script or the storyboard come first?
Neither should be finished first. Start with a rough list of pictures, write one sentence beside each, then revise both. The first draft of an animated video is usually a set of beats, not a polished page of prose. If one side is locked early, the other is forced to serve it. The goal is a shared order, not a winner. How much on-screen text should an explainer video use?
Use on-screen text for labels, numbers, and short phrases that the voice skips. An explainer video does not need a transcript on screen. If the text and the voice say the same thing, cut one of them. The viewer should not have to choose between reading and listening. Text earns its place when it reduces the number of words the voice must carry. What if the animation is already finished?
Write the narration to the motion, not to your original idea. Watch the sequence once without sound and note what changes and when. Then write one line for each change. If a sentence has no matching change, it is probably commentary and can be cut. An explainer video script written after the pictures should be shorter than one written before them, because the pictures have already done part of the explaining.Try this on your next draft: read the script beside a rough storyboard and mark every sentence that has no visible partner. Rewrite those sentences or cut them, then read the whole thing aloud while watching the motion. The goal is not fewer words; it is words that arrive when the picture is ready for them.#animation #video #design #writing #software #coding #development #engineering #inclusive #community

Mbappé double secures Real Madrid late victory at Barcelona after Raphinha leveller
By Sid Lowe at the Camp NouThirteen years later, José Mourinho led Real Madrid into the Camp Nou, and he led them out again with a late, late victory that opens up a whole new world. With three minutes remaining and the energy with which they had played dropping, a wonderful piece of skill from Jude Bellingham found Eduardo Camavinga and set them on one last run on a night in which there were so many of them. Camavinga sprinted into the area, slipped away from Pau Cubarsí and pulled the ball back for Kylian Mbappé to provide the finish.

Terland strikes late as United end Manchester City’s winning start in WSL

The reported bug was a carrier lookup returning 404 because an international phone number never reached E.164 normalization. The traceback pointed at
normalizePhone. The agent searched the repo for "normalize", got backnormalizeEmail, normalizePhone, andnormalizeAddress, picked the first match, and spent the pass rewritingnormalizeEmailinto a prettier helper. It wrote a few unit tests against that helper, went green, and reported done. The original phone path never changed.A keyword search returns a naming family, not a call graph. The agent matched tokens, not the failing symbol, and "I edited a function called normalize" became "I fixed the bug."
Why it lands on the lookalike
A broad search ranks by token overlap. Everynormalize*function scores well on the same word, and nothing in the loop asks which symbol appears in the failing stack frame. The agent sees three interchangeable helpers and treats the first as the obvious target, because the traceback's exact function name was never pinned to the task as an anchor.Naming families invite the slip. When
normalizeEmail, normalizePhone, andnormalizeAddresslive near each other and share a similar signature, they read as one generic utility even though their callers, inputs, and failure modes differ. The agent refactors the shared-looking helper rather than the one on the failing path, and its own new tests cover whatever it touched, so green confirms the edited code, not the reported bug.The human review helps it through: we skim the diff for a sensible-looking cleanup, see tests pass, and miss that the edited function never appears in the original traceback.
The tells that the wrong function got fixed
- The edited symbol is absent from the failing stack trace. Compare the function in the diff against the frame in the original report; if they differ, the edit never sat on the failing path.
- The failing test references a different symbol. A green suite built around
normalizeEmailsays nothing aboutnormalizePhone; the new tests target the helper the agent chose, not the failure someone filed. - The original repro still fails on the exact input. Feed the reported phone number back after the fix; a silent 404 that still appears means the untouched path stayed untouched.
- The diff touches a happy path that already worked. A cleanup of an unrelated normalization function reads as polish, not a carrier-lookup fix.
- The agent describes the change generically ("improved normalization") instead of naming the failing endpoint or stack frame.
Anchor the failing symbol before editing
The cheap guard is to pin the exact symbol from the traceback into the task before the agent touches anything: the module, function, and file the stack names are the only legitimate targets. A broad keyword search may surface neighbors, but none of them may be edited until the failing one is resolved.- Require a before/after repro run on the original input. The agent must run the failing case before the edit and again after, and the second run has to pass on the same reported input. A clean helper with no connection to the repro fails this gate.
- Check callers against the failing request. After choosing a symbol, grep its call sites and confirm one matches the reported request path; if none lines up, the match is a near miss.
- Search from the stack frame, not the keyword. Start from the frame the traceback names, then walk outward to siblings; do not let a generic token list pick the target for you.
- Attach the minimal failing case to the agent. When the repro stays visible through the session, done means that specific input behaves, not that an adjacent helper got cleaner.
Edited is not fixed
Green after a near-match cleanup proves only that the touched function passed its own new tests. Pin the symbol from the traceback, run the original repro before and after, and make sure the edited call site matches the failing request. When the agent patches the first lookalike it finds, the bug did not move; the agent just worked on the wrong page.#aiagents #aicode #contextengineering #codereview #software #coding #development #engineering #inclusive #community
