  1. @larstransportworld That’s a great map (and definitely all due credit to France), but it’s also a very depressing reminder that, over 40 years since the #LGV network started, the •entirety• of the #UK #HighSpeedRail network still fits in a corner of the French map! 😢

(Haphazard progress is being made on a savagely truncated #HS2 route, and at least we do have fairly extensive #MediumSpeedRail (200 km/h max) service on many InterCity routes, but it is beyond ridiculous that UK is so far behind.)

  2. The #TfE (#LothianBuses and #EdinburghTrams) #TransportTracker app seems to be having an off moment just now (probably in absolutely no way affected by the #EdinburghFestivals crowds starting to arrive 🤔), so just a reminder that the old #Edinburgh #BusTracker website still exists (and still seems to be working, assuming that it does have accurate data from the “new” system?).

  5. For the first time in my life, I have encountered the “You wait ages for a bus and then two come at once” scenario…

(Actually, very little waiting, the #TfE #Edinburgh #LothianBuses #BusTracker app means you can leave to get to the stop just before the right time. ☺️

But two buses on the same (less frequent) service route right behind each other? Something didn’t quite work out right somewhere!)

  10. @jon On the other hand, if your train from České Budějovice is delayed, at least you can get some •proper• real #PGI Budweiser lager to drown your sorrows… 🍺

  11. Very good to see #TheGuardian rightly giving the #EUElection headline prominence on its home page, but also so sadly noticeable that the #BBC gives only a brief mention well down the page, whereas for the USA (with a far smaller population) the BBC always gives their elections top billing.

I can’t help but think that if the UK media had always devoted more fair and proper coverage to our neighbours and (former) compatriots, we wouldn’t be in our current mess… #RejoinSingleMarket #RejoinEU

  12. UK Prime Minister announces #UKParliament #UKElection for Thursday 4 July.

Has the date cynically been chosen to be in the first part of school summer holidays in Scotland (when many families may be away) and university/college summer break (many students may also be away or at home and not registered to vote there)?

Remember to register for a #PostalVote if you want or need to, and to have ID if voting in person.

  15. A great pro-EEC quote from “The Sun”(!) in 1975 (when UK voted to #Remain), superimposed on the commemorative EEC 50p, which was true in 1973, 1975, certainly 2016, and of course still now:

“When the world says Britain hasn't a snowball in hell's chance of going it alone, is that the time to say NO?”

  16. @macrumors Well, yes, it could, but what we all really want to know is will it still have #TouchID and a #HomeButton 😜

  17. The #midpoint of the year is today, the 2nd of July.

It will be 182 ½ days since the start of the year at solar midday, with the same time remaining until the end of the year.

Because the UK is currently on #BST (British Summer Time, GMT+01), the solar midday #halfway time in #Edinburgh will actually be when the #OneOClockGun fires at 13:00 BST.

(Yes, yes, the rotation and orbit of the earth and the existence of Leap Years make things slightly more complicated than this…)

  22. @drnoble Yes, many people, including myself, have suggested that the #EdinburghSouthSub has good #TramTrain potential, but there seems to be a fixation that people want to go to the city centre, even though it would be a very useful orbital link between many significant trip destinations.

  23. The #SpokesMtg about the planned #Edinburgh #trams line to Granton is about to start.

Should the route use the former railway corridor via Roseburn, where it may be harder to retain room for the #cycleway and keep some of the greenery, or a much slower on-road route via Dean Bridge?

  24. [an aside, while at #SpokesMtg:

It’s always slightly annoying how so many speakers at public meetings/conferences don’t format their slides in a #BiggerFont #LessText so as to be actually readable by that part of the audience 20m+ away… 14pt might as well be illegible #SmallPrint. Text needs to be •at least• 24 – 36pt. #accessibility ]

  25. @cstross @ilmari @jon Hmm, I find the current #EDB platform numbering pretty sensible: as you say, they just go round clockwise. Most trains depart from the higher numbered west facing ones (mostly all in a row), and fewer from the east facing or (awkward) through/island ones (where, yes, you have to use the footbridge). The numbering was definitely an awful lot more confusing/non-euclidean before they redid it a few [1] years ago!

[1] OK, rather more than a “few” now…

  26. There are many places where the arrangements of international #borders result in interesting eccentricities: I didn't previously know about #Verdis, a self-proclaimed forest #micronation alongside the River Danube, comprising land (and part of the river) that, somewhat bizarrely, is claimed by neither Croatia nor Serbia (as each country regards the alignment of their shared border differently). And, of course, someone has mapped it on #OpenStreetMap

  27. It’s good to see some people I know from #AnotherPlace starting to join various Mastodon servers now. It’s probably about time that I started to make more use of this myself (it felt a little bit like telling a monologue to a rather empty theatre up until now). ☺️

  28. @cstross @ChrisMayLA6
Absolutely. With hindsight, the 80s was a very strange and quite terrifying time to be growing up. The #IronCurtain splitting Europe in two, frequent footage of #CheckpointCharlie and nuclear missile launchers on tv news. On the outside of the local municipal swimming pool(!), a sign showing #fallout circles rippling out from #Faslane, to remind you just how dead you would be if/when it was targeted. ☢️

On the other hand, we got #99LuftBallons… 🥰
