THE ARSENIO HALL SHOW, 6/20/1989, syndicated

Today in 1989, comedian/host Arsenio Hall did a routine about straight people reacting to Pride parades as if they were driving through Lion Country Safari, rolling up the windows and locking the doors as wild queers hurl themselves against the car windows.

  5. My attempt at cleaning up the video and sound on a 1956 talk show about homosexuality, which treats same-sex desire more or less as an illness. But hey, it was progress that they were discussing this then-taboo subject on 1950s TV at all.

Here are the first 2 minutes of the show. The first few seconds are the unprocessed original file, after which the picture and audio restoration begins. The video looks a bit overprocessed but the tech is slowly getting there.

(The tools used here were NeatVideo, Topaz Video AI [Iris model with manually adjusted settings], iZotope audio software, Premiere, and the voice enhancer on Adobe Podcast.)

  12. I'm watching the Tony Awards telecast, hearing one male winner after another thank his husband or boyfriend, and am loving it.

Anyone remember the 1983 Tonys, when Harvey Fierstein's "Torch Song Trilogy" won Best Play, and producer John Glines thanked his male partner, and lots of people completely lost their shit about it? So glad we're way past that!

(Feel free to read that as a Wizard of Oz reference or just as me calling the former Rev. Robertson a complete ding-dong.)

TALES OF THE CITY - 6/7/2019, Netflix

A more diverse cast and writing team brought to life this long-awaited continuation of the 1993-2001 set of limited-run TV series based on Armistead Maupin's novels. Maupin's stories dealt with a mix of gay, lesbian, bi, trans, straight and cis characters who formed a family of choice while living in a house in San Francisco.

In the revival, whose plot was original to the Netflix series, all new trans roles were cast with trans or enby actors and there was greater racial diversity than in the earlier TV incarnations.

OUR SONS (TV movie) - 5/19/1991, ABC

A 1991 gay AIDS drama from the moms' perspective: Julie Andrews plays a millionaire whose son's partner has AIDS. Ann-Margret plays the partner's homophobic mom from rural Arkansas, who has refused to see her son since he came out. The mothers are the focus of this clip.

Hugh Grant and Željko Ivanek played the young male couple, one of whom is living the final weeks of his life.

The general reaction at the time was that such stories needed telling in the early 1990s, but that certain aspects of OUR SONS didn't quite "click."
