I Picked Up a Star on the Road
(2018 - Viki, 10 1:03 eps)Thanks to a recommendation here, I picked this one up. Total binge! The story is ridiculous & you have to be willing to go along with the craziness & the unconscionable behavior. But if you like dark humor, it's worth it. The 1st few eps are full of it. The humor changes to physical & silly in the middle & we are rewarded with a bit more dark humor at the end.
Accidental murders & kidnappings, love triangles, & Sung Hoon was, as usual, cast as the aloof, rich, full-of-himself character that he plays pretty well, but this time, he doesn't have much power & it's funny. The 2nd ML was great! I can't believe he hasn't yet gotten another main role.
Nothing terribly outstanding, but a fun, easy watch, & a taste of dark humor, which I don't often find in kDramas.

Level Up
(2019 - Viki, 12 1:00 eps)Yet another Sung Hoon romcom with a cold boss & a woman with less power & a love triangle. This one was heavier on the comedy & very, very light on the romance & the FL actually has some good character development.
Being in tech, this story about a struggling gaming company and nasty competitors was fun to watch. Nothing outstanding, but a cute, calm watch, although the ending is a bit lacking in explanation. Since I didn't become invested in these characters, it was okay.

Are We in Love?
(2020 - Viki, Movie 1:47)Another role for Sung Hoon as a cold boss who falls for a timid female employee while they both suffer through many misunderstandings. The poor FL has a miserable life & doesn't feel worthy of anything good. It has a bit of magic that could have been really cute, but it fizzled out.
The thing that sticks out is ML's over-the-top anger at the beginning. Who knows where that came from? I've seen Sung Hoon do anger much better. It was so strong it felt out of place in a breezy cafe setting.
Better writing could have made this cute story idea much more watchable.

Noble, My Love
(2015 - Viki, 20 15min eps)So glad this one was short. I get the feeling that this was the 1st run at "My Secret Romance" - which thankfully got a better director. Aside from the occupation of the FL, the story is about the same - down to the hiccups. But this one is so bad in spots you have to laugh. A horrible "fish" kiss after falling off a ladder was held for much, much, much too long. I can't imagine what the director was thinking.
The FL is a vet. so there are cute animals. The horribly manipulative CEO who backs the FL into no-choice corners is there, along with the mandatory love triangle to make the ML realize his feelings. kDrama tropes through & through.
Still, kind of a fun watch in a B-movie sort of way.

Oh My Venus
(2015 - Viki, 16 1hr eps)In this cute romcom bandaids become a symbol for healing - physically & mentally. The plot is about an overweight, stressed lawyer meeting a personal trainer after breaking up with her boyfriend of 15 years. They did a reasonable job with the weightloss transformation topic & tried to impress on the audience that a healthy inside was the goal.
The acting was outstanding (see comment about Sung Hoon). The leads were great together (loved her in Hometown Cha x 3). You will hate some characters - the ML's family is a mess. The 2nd couple will make you mad, but they have a lot of char. dev. The 3-way bromance is so cute.
There are some weird kDrama logic holes & some noble idiot shenanigans. Overall, it's a sweet, funny drama about healing.

Our Blooming Youth (20 episodes on Viki)Another one I'm sad to see end. I will miss the characters. It was fantastic. Even as a mystery, it will be a rewatch for me. The acting is stellar. The twists were unexpected. There is a complicated mystery with political intrigue, friendships, comedy, romance and some action. It’s a commentary on trust, the importance of friends, social injustices and how they can drive people to do things they wouldn't normally, on women's voices, and how powerful people will do anything to maintain their power.

Descendants of the Sun
(2016 Viki, 16 60min eps)This was a good drama - military action, hospital sitcom, & romcom all in one. I liked the romance of the 2nd & 3rd couples better than the 1st. Both the 1st & 2nd had a lot of repeat romance scenarios which got a little old.
Since much of the action took place outside Korea, the scenery was very different & beautiful. Learning more about the Korean military was interesting. Good OST.
Came for Song Joong Ki, stayed for Kim Ji Won. He was great - doesn't look tough, but he pulls tough guy off really well (See Vincenzo). She is just an amazing actress. She pulls you right in.
I loved seeing the two MLs support each other. The episodes with the main conflict were completely engaging, but once that ended, the storyline seemed to drift a bit.
Good to watch once. Might be a rewatch someday.

Two people with problems that make them perfect for each other, although maybe ill-fated. They try to discover if inner beauty is the only thing that matters - a great premise, but for me it ruined the end of the show. (See next post) Overall the beginning was interesting & fun. The ending was okay, but the last episodes seemed flat. There was also the noble idiot thing.
It is not a rewatch for me. It has some good messages, learning to love yourself as you are, not judging people by their looks, overcoming things together instead of suffering alone - all worthwhile things to strive for.

The MLs were only 22 when this was filmed, but they carry off the older characters well. There was good chemistry & the FL did a fantastic job of being sweet without being cringe. Even in this short drama, she had good character growth. The child actors are so cute. I've seen the boy in many series, but the girl was unfamiliar & I thought she was fabulous. She'll be one to watch.
This one could become a comfort watch for me - there are even puppies & a bunny!

(2014 - Viki, 20 0:58 eps)FL with Pinocchio Syndrome - hiccups start when she lies - wants to become a news reporter. It examines corruption w/in the media & how it affects society. It's a gripping story about the tragedies that result from greed. It is also about grief when someone close is not the person you thought they were. All the main characters struggle w/ this in their relationships & learn they can't change others, but they can change their perspective.
ML & FL both won multiple awards, top actors, popularity, & best couple. It won best soundtrack & Outstanding Korean Drama.
Every eps. was wonderfully paced. Side characters were marvelously written. Romance is sweet, but secondary to the reporters' story, where a decision means life or death. It's a great watch & deserves its reputation as a kDrama classic.

W: Two Worlds (2016 Viki 16 60min eps)I held off the last 2 episodes for over week because I was too afraid to see the end. I really loved this drama at first. The story is original and the actors are great, but I felt the writers let me down in the last half. I needed more depth to the characters and for the fantasy part to make more sense. The romance, which seemed so promising at first, fizzled for me. (See spoiler comment) The side characters, apart from the father, stayed side characters and did not have their own stories, which was wasted potential. The actors playing the side characters were good. They could have easily carried a complementary storyline.
It was a unique story with great cinematography and action scenes. I may rewatch at some point, but I feel it could have been better. It's sad to see the potential slip away at the end.

Doona!
(2023 - Netflix, 9 0:50 eps)So pleasantly surprised. While a few tears were shed, the drama was surprisingly uplifting. The main character goes through a lot of introspection which is difficult to show visually, but it succeeds. The scenes feel intimate & the writing is sweet yet sharp - at times her retorts betray her feelings & surprise the characters & audience alike.
The ML expresses his feelings very well - he is involved in a love triangle, but handles it beautifully. The side characters are so interesting - I wish the drama had been longer & we had gotten even more of their stories.
Fortunately, someone had warned me ahead of time to not skip the intros. The opening scenes contain clues to what eventually happens & are a stroke of genius & perfection. The only thing I disliked about this drama was the smoking. Wouldn't smoking damage her voice?

Just finished "Soundtrack #1" on Disney. Do Not listen to this with the English dub! The English actors sound like they are reading from cue cards. Horrible! The show loses all meaning. I watched in Korean with English sub-titles and you can hear the emotion so much better.
It’s a very short (4 episodes) series about patient love & loving someone more than yourself. Park Hyung-sik does an amazing job at conveying this quiet love.

Melting Me Softly
(2019 - Viki, 16 1:05 eps)An interesting idea for a story - 2 people volunteer to be frozen for a day, but due to evil shenanigans, wake up 20 years later to a changed world, friends, & family.
The cast is full of phenomenal talent. Although the FL has disappointed me in 2 dramas now. The screen writer wrote one of my favorites, "Strong Woman Do Bong Soon," but here was just a full-of-tropes drama with some silliness. There could have been a profound statement about the passage of time changing our values & perspectives, but it missed the mark, didn't use the crime or the secondary characters to emphasize a theme (as she did in SWDBS).
Ji Chang Wook & the other wonderful actors save it as a cute romcom, but it really could have been so much more. That said I did laugh & even shed a few tears, but don't expect a lot.

I wouldn’t say that “The K2” is better than Healer. I don’t think the story is as well developed. But if you love Ji Chang Wook fighting, it is a great watch. He won an award for “Best Dressed Actor” for it.
