🧪Research Highlight from a #ChemistryEurope journal
Walter Thiel Medal winner Felix Plasser, UK, and colleagues studied how molecules in solid organic materials interact, focusing on the influence of π-stacking and explaining under what circumstances their chromophores couple to form H- or J-aggregates

Almost all #hydrocarbons currently stem from fossil #fuels, but the method developed by the Cambridge-Berkeley team results in clean #chemicals and fuels made from CO2, water and glycerol – a common organic compound – without any additional carbon emissions.

In the ChemSci Pick of the Week, Dr Chaofeng Zhang and colleagues from Anhui University designed a new covalent organic framework with dual redox-active sites through a simple condensation reaction of TA and PTO-NH2 in a Schiff base reaction.

The green color seen in the coma of Comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) and other comets, but not in their tails, is due to emissions from Diatomic carbon molecules.
Sunlight heats the comet’s ice and organic material to produce C2 molecules, which break apart in ~2 days before they reach the tail. C2 is excited by solar UV radiation and emits mostly in infrared but its triplet state radiates at 518 nm.

Today in the classroom:
I'm not in a really good mental state today. Nothing I can do about it right now, so I'm pressing on.
First year chem is taking a redox quiz. Then we're doing notes on half cells and predicting cell potential based on the electrodes.
Second year chem will do an ester synthesis today. I've got materials for wintergreen and banana. It'll allow me to give them a _tiny_ glimpse at organic reactions.

How does #groundwater dissolved organic matter (DOM) change over time?
As part of the AquaDiva project at @unijena we are investigating the #metabolomics (DOM) in an aquifer monitoring system in Germany.
Our multi-year dataset now allows to query DOM changes in response to water flows.
This short-video (2 min) gives an insight – comments & contact welcome!

I am hiring a one-year, full-time post-bac for an NSF-funded polymer degradation project! This position is ideal for someone with strong organic or inorganic synthetic skills who doesn't feel quite ready for grad school yet or didn't receive admission offers they're excited about. The current fellow is headed to a PhD at Northeastern chem, is coauthor on a paper, and will be presenting at ACS in Atlanta. Please share! #chemjobs #research #PUI #chemistry #mentoring https://careers.pageuppeople.com/695/cw/en-us/job/493285/nsf-postbaccalaureate-fellow-in-chemistry

atoco using reticular chemistry for atmospheric water harvesting and carbon capture:

https://atoco.com/carbon-capture/Both look like fascinating and viable applications of the technology.
(Since it seems to be relevant for credibility: one of the founders, Prof. Yaghi, received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the development of metal–organic frameworks.)

Fantastic paper from Brooks Able at Berkeley using an organic catalyst to achieve high molecular weight for poly(THF) via cationic ring-opening polymerization. The low ceiling temperatures of these polymers make them attractive targets for reversible polymerizations, but it has previously been really hard to get to the molecular weights required for good mechanical properties. #chemistry #polymers #JACS https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/jacs.5c18359
