_Hideki Shirakawa, Who Helped Turn a Lab Error Into a Nobel, Dies at 90_

“…someone accidentally added 1,000 times too much catalyst to the reaction to create the polyacetylene. Instead of getting a black powdery substance, as expected, the result was a silvery film that looked more like metal than plastic. Dr. Shirakawa was intrigued by the result and began studying the unusual material to better understand its properties.”

Most of my lab mistakes turned out to be mere blunders. I don't recall ever stumbling upon something *interesting* as a result… how about y'all?

⛽️ EU relaxes methane and carbon emission rules

Apparently the heat waves this summer in Europe have been not enough cause of concern, so the European Commission has postponed fines on oil and gas companies for methane emissions until 2030, citing concern over energy supplies and prices.

Methane is a potent greenhouse gas which is responsible of 30% of the rise in global temperatures since the Industrial Revolution.

Chemical recycling plants closing in EU and US

70% of EU plastic waste goes to incineration or landfill, and almost 20% of recycled plastics being converted into products in the EU rely on imported feedstocks, according to a report from Plastics Europe. Chemically recycled materials made up just 0.2% of plastics European plastics production in 2024.

I had no idea of the history behind the NFPA 704 fire diamond! *gulp*

"The development of NFPA 704 is credited to the Charlotte Fire Department after a fire at the Charlotte Chemical Company in 1959 led to severe injuries to many of the firefighters.Upon arrival, the fire crew found a fire burning inside a vat that firefighters assumed to be burning kerosene. The crew tried to suppress the fire, which resulted in the vat exploding due to metallic sodium being stored in the kerosene. Thirteen firefighters were injured, several of whom had critical injuries while one lost both ears and most of his face from the incident.”

"How Bell Labs Won Its First Nobel Prize” by Brian Potter.

A great read about the 1925 Davisson and Germer experiment (the canonical “electrons have wave properties” xpt that our chemistry undergrads learn about in physical chemistry class).

Such a long and winding road from inception to realization of what they had discovered. I was unaware of all the details, and found this very enlightening!
