  1. Very nice collection of (organic) chemistry links and resources from @acsorganic

Pretty amazed that they have an advisory board for this resource, and it seems (at first glance) to be pretty up-to-date.

    Kudos!

  3. "How Bell Labs Won Its First Nobel Prize” by Brian Potter.

A great read about the 1925 Davisson and Germer experiment (the canonical “electrons have wave properties” xpt that our chemistry undergrads learn about in physical chemistry class).

Such a long and winding road from inception to realization of what they had discovered. I was unaware of all the details, and found this very enlightening!

  4. Somewhat shameful chemical secret:

I had to balance two redox equations today (using the half-reaction method I teach in genchem) to quantitatively neutralize two solutions:

    ◼︎ one of sodium metabisulfate
☞ using hypochlorite (bleach + sodium carbonate)

◼︎ the other of potassium iodate
    ☞ w/ sodium thiosulfate (photographer's hypo)

I can't think of the last time I had a practical use to balance using the half-reaction method. Oh, the joys of chemistry! 🥰🧪

  5. I am in the mood for grading! What the heck is wrong with me... and why has it taken 25+ years for me to achieve this state?

Secondly, grading gen-chem lab reports has been eerily spooky. Questions that almost nobody gets right are seeing success rates of 90+%.

Of course, this year's exam average is about half a letter grade lower than last year’s, which was a whole letter grade lower than our historical averages, so goodness only knows what's going on.‡

    ‡ Spoiler: it's AI.

  6. Really compelling preprint on degradable, chemically recyclable poly(orthoester)s. I hope this lands somewhere good and gets the attention it deserves. 7. I'm working on an updated LibGuide for chemistry at my university. We're a public, PUI (primarily undergraduate institution) in the state of Ohio (USA).

I’ve drafted a guide here: gist.github.com/QuantumDot2/ab and am curious whether anyone sees any glaring missing resources, or can recommend any additions?

We can't afford any nice databases (SciFinder, Reaxys, etc.). We do have CRC handbook e-access plus ChemDraw, as well as the state's OhioLINK library consortium.

    Thanks!

  8. Chemistry folks: any thoughts on the best non-programmable calculator for Gen Chem classes (I'm in the USA)?

We currently use the TI-30XIIS, but thinking about something more "modern" with better math typesetting.

Also intrigued by the 36X which can solve quadratic equations.

Are there better options than TI?

    Appreciate any insights!

  9. 200 years ago (June 16, 1825), Michael Faraday's paper announcing the discovery of benzene (bicarburet of hydrogen) was published.

Because most chemists were using an incorrect atomic mass for carbon, it was assigned the chemical formula of C₆H₃, or (C₂H)₃, hence “bicarburet”) instead of C₆H₆.

Faraday isolated it by repeated distillations from a sample of “oil gas.” His original vial is still on display at the Royal Institution. #Chemistry #Chemiverse

  15. Less than 10% of plastics are produced using recycled materials

An analysis of the global plastics industry shows that only 9.5% of plastic was made from recycled materials in 2022. Almost a third of plastic waste produced during that year was allocated for recycling, but only half was actually recycled.

  24. I cannot explain quite how comforting it is to hear the nitrogen boiling from the traps in the Schlenk line while I watch boiling solvent being stripped from a reaction. Just feels like all is right with the world for a moment when endothermic and exothermic processes occur just as they should.
