Great book! 👍 Here's the hardback over art.

Note to the curious... the first few pages are a very jocular but accurate depiction of Ada's origin, upbringing, and influences (a great way to learn her story). The remainder is a mash-up of historical figures like #GeorgeEliot, #steampunk fantasy (all on the mark), & early #information_science.

It is a wild and rewarding ride!

#CataractSurgery is on joke. You can die on the table. I nearly did.

I had my cataract surgeries done at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center. When I went for my second surgery they gave me too much fentanyl and I became "unresponsive". I don't know whose mistake it was, either the anesthetist or the factory that dosed it out. Either way, the surgeon called my partner and told her. She thought I was dying and totally freaked out.

They gave me to puffs or Narcan with no results so they wheeled me to the recovery room so I'd die on somebody else's watch. A nurse in the recovery room gave me a third puff and a came out of it bleary but alive. My partner showed up and took me home. She was seriously shook up by the incident. She was mad, too. She really, really, really, wanted to sue. It was a clear cut case of malpractice but, as our lawyer explained, we couldn't get any monetary recompense "because there was no permanent damage".

Two weeks later I went back to to get the second cataract removed. I refused fentanyl. They refused to give me Propofol instead, so I went through the operation with only local anesthesia. I was totally conscious. It was like staring at a giant Klieg light up close, not pleasant at all, but I had to do it in order to see, so I did.

  13. @CarveHerName The establishment of the Kingdom of Hawai'i is perhaps one of our more unusual stories among a whole series of extraordinary lives captured by the #DiversityProject of the #Bywgraffiadur. We're currently preparing an article about the Welshman Issac 'Aikake' Davis who, together with John Young, acted as advisor to the future first king, Kamehameha I, and was instrumental in the unification and establishment of the kingdom in 1795. Only this morning, our author in Hawai'i shared a link to a video that shows Davis's personal Book of Common Prayer, the first of its kind in the archipelago, exhibited at the Cathedral of St. Andrew.

  15. New blog post!

It's a leap year, which means it's our one-in-four-years chance to post about Hattie McDaniel's Oscar win on 29 February 1940. The story of it reflects her own complicated story, and it's still rippling 80 years on from her night at the Coconut Grove.

  22. @CarveHerName A source for the words by #SojournerTruth
(spoken at the First Annual Meeting of the American Equal Rights
    Association - May 9, 1867):

    > I feel that if I have to answer for the deeds done in my body just as
    > much as a man, I have a right to have just as much as a man. There is
    > a great stir about colored men getting their rights, but not a word
    > about the colored women; and if colored men get their rights, and not
    > colored women theirs, you see the colored men will be masters over the
    > women, and it will be just as bad as it was before.

There doesn't seem to be any work going on on the categorisation of hashtags just simplistic things like most popular lists.

I would like to see that kind of work happening.
When using hashtags you should boost the posting to get it cross-posted to other instances.

The more consistent you are with your hashtags the more likely that they'll be used by others.
