  3. During our 2-year run on the #DiversityProject for the #Bywgraffiadur, we published over 60 fantastic articles about extraordinary people in the #history of #Wales. Today was my last day on the project and it is only fitting to go out on #TransDayOfVisiblity by sharing Mike Parker's beautiful contribution about the travel-writer and Gymraes by choice, Jan Morris.

If you have not had the delight to encounter her writing or stories about her, Jan's life as emojis might look something like this: 🧜💂🧑‍💻🏞️🌍📝🗒️🗞️🤱🚼📰🚼🚼🥾🏔️🗞️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇲🇦🏳️‍⚧️💅✍️👭🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇪🇬📘🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🛃📗🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🛄⚧️📙🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🏺🗡️📚🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿👩‍❤️‍👩🪦

    We've covered #BAMEHistory #LGBTQ_ and #DisabilityHistory, #WomensHistory, #ArtHistory, the #HistoryOfScience, #HistoryOfReligion and #Wales

Frankly, there's not a single article in this collection that's not bound to be of interest to someone.

  5. I have finally encountered my personal bête noire.

Excited primary school kids 🧒 speaking their second language 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 at hyper-speed ⏩ and getting recorded with background noise (🧒 more 🧒 children 🧒 chatting 🧒).

    My ears: 😱 😱😱😱

  6. New language skill unlocked:
Transcribing the 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 ex-Archdruid speaking rapid-fire Gog to school kids for subtitles.

'Ac yn fan hyn mae na lun o Orsedd, a dyma o, Cynan, fan hyn yn ei wisg, ynde? Yn Archdderwydd a dyn ni’n gweld meini Orsedd a Cynan yn dal basged uwch ei ben yn fan ‘na.'

And that's the easiest bit to understand speaking as someone who learnt #Cymraeg south of the Checkpoint Cletwr line.

    Next language skill to crack:
    Make the transcript grammatical.

  7. @CarveHerName The establishment of the Kingdom of Hawai'i is perhaps one of our more unusual stories among a whole series of extraordinary lives captured by the #DiversityProject of the #Bywgraffiadur. We're currently preparing an article about the Welshman Issac 'Aikake' Davis who, together with John Young, acted as advisor to the future first king, Kamehameha I, and was instrumental in the unification and establishment of the kingdom in 1795. Only this morning, our author in Hawai'i shared a link to a video that shows Davis's personal Book of Common Prayer, the first of its kind in the archipelago, exhibited at the Cathedral of St. Andrew.

  8. Reposting my #Introduction because there's a flurry of new folks -- and I'm an eternal optimist at finding fellow Welsh writing in English peeps. So here goes:

I work as the Community Outreach Officer for the Welsh Dictionary of Biography, more collquially called the #Bywgraffiadur, at the #NationalLibraryOfWales. Our goal is to close representational gaps and set the Dictionary on a course of recording the diverse lives of historical Welsh people in all their facets. biography.wales/

Otherwise, I'm working on #WelshWritingInEnglish mostly from the long #C19. Other research interests include #TravelWriting, particularly illustrated accounts and the history of the #VisitorsBook. I'm also into #PublicHistory and community outreach, sometimes abt #PortHeritage, #WW1 German submarine warfare and its effects on Welsh communities.

    I share longer #WiP here: bydbach.hcommons.org/

Toots will be mostly in #English, but occasionally also in #Deutsch and #Cymraeg.

  9. I'm in the middle of tagging up our next article for the #DiversityProject of the #Bywgraffiadur and the author's very diplomatic turn of phrase -- 'who became his model, and more' -- just gave me a good chuckle.

  10. I'm in the middle of marking up the latest article for the #DiversityProject of the #Bywgraffiadur about the jeweller and trader Morris Wartski and there's the casual mention that the Marquess of Anglesey attended the lavish wedding of Wartski's daughter in 1903.

Doing the maths, it wasn't just any marquess, but *that* Marquess -- who was not only a good customer, but had also helped Wartski to set up his business.

Oh, to have been privy to the conversations of an observing man (who helped set up the first synagogue in Bangor!) and the man who makes David Bowie look like someone who wasn't trying hard enough.

  11. As one of my last assignments for 2024, I just finished writing my fourth article for the #Bywgraffiadur. The short version is currently in the hands of our main editor -- the long version, complete with an avalanche of images is waiting on my blog.

So if you ever wondered why a German artist created the 6-foot sword in the National #Eisteddfod in #Wales, look no further.

  15. 📢 NEW ARTICLE 📢

SHOSHI MUKHI DASS (1868 - 1921), missionary, teacher and nurse

'In Glasgow, she was actively involved with the Welsh National Union while further south, in Wales, she delivered several public lectures to Methodist audiences. Wearing a sari to demonstrate the typical dress of women in north-east India, she spoke in English about the history and culture of her country, her education and missionary work, and sang hymns in Bangla. During her second year in Britain, she frequently lectured together with Kate E. Williams, Pwllheli, to crowded audiences. These appearances were part of the qualification process for outgoing missionaries to India for the Welsh Calvinistic Methodist Church. Shoshi had been accepted by the General Assembly at Bootle by May 1893.' -- Rita Singer

  16. For anyone who feels like conjuring #demons this week, here's a cautionary tale from #Wales.

JOHN HARRIES (c.1785-1839), astrologer and medical practitioner
'It is said that John Harries kept one of his books padlocked and hidden away, and only dared open it once a year in a nearby secluded wood where he would read various incantations from it to summon forth spirits. Once opened, the book was said to create a very severe storm. This led to the notion that the Harrieses derived their power from this large volume of spells, bound with an iron chain and three locks. [...] John Harries died in a fire on 11 May 1839 aged 54. It is reported that he had a premonition that he would die by accident on that date, and to avoid this happening he stayed in bed all day. During the night the house caught fire, and he died as a result.' -- Morfudd Nia Jones

  17. 📢 NEW ARTICLE 📢

JAMES (JIM) SAPOE JOHN MANNAY (Ahmed Hassan Ismail) (1927 - 2012), historian and poet
'Together with his cousin Emily, Benjamin Johnson's daughter, Jim spent years recording the history of the Kru people. They both kept many documents relating to individuals and Jim wrote extensively about the community in Tiger Bay, detailing many Kru and English names and nicknames. He was also a poet whose life story was reflected in his work. Thanks to the accuracy of his storytelling, Jim's work has resulted in the identification of over 600 individuals from West Africa throughout the UK, and became the basis of research to identify seamen from the Kru community who served in the two World Wars.' -- Rebecca J Eversley

  18. 📢 ERTHYGL NEWYDD 📢 NEW ARTICLE 📢
VALENTINE MORRIS (1727 - 1789), colonial administrator and landowner
'On his father's death in 1743, Morris inherited the Piercefield estate, along with substantial plantations in Antigua including a great number of enslaved people. These included Looby's, Crabb's, and Martin's in St Paul Parish in southern Antigua and Jolly's in St Mary Parish in western Antigua. In 1776, Morris was rated as owning 1,004 acres on the island, which was worked by 284 enslaved people. As Ivor Waters strikingly puts it, 'The elegant Valentine Morris owned Piercefield in Monmouthshire, worth £50,000 and Piercefield, a slave in Antigua, worth £10.' He was largely an absentee plantation owner while in Britain, apart from a visit to Antigua in 1754 following a period of drought there.' -- Adam Coward

  20. 📢 NEW ARTICLE 📢
WILLIAM ANDERSON HALL (born c. 1820), carpenter, fugitive from slavery, author
'Fleeing from enslavement, William was often helped by 'friends', a euphemism for the network of free African Americans and others who were sympathetic to those seeking to escape slavery and who made up the Underground Railroad. However, William's journey was far from straightforward. He was caught and imprisoned on at least two occasions, suffered beatings and betrayal and found that life in the free states of the North could be as precarious as in the South. It was only when William reached Canada that his 'old feelings of dread' left him.' -- Phil Okwedy

  21. I've just sent in my draft to the #Bywgraffiadur about the Indian medical missionary Shoshi Mukhi Dass (1868-1921). More likely than not, it will get whittled down, so this is a good way to preserve the "director's cut".

ANARAWD ap GRUFFYDD (died 1143), prince
'In 1138, with his brother Cadell, he joined Owain and Cadwaladr, now dominating Ceredigion, in an attack upon Cardigan castle which was still held by the Normans; a formidable array of Viking ships appeared in furtherance of the enterprise at the mouth of the Teify, but hostilities were suspended by a truce and nothing came of the endeavour.' -- John Edward Lloyd

PATRICIA MAUD (Patti) FLYNN (1937 - 2020), musician, author, activist
'Patti Flynn was a strong advocate and campaigner for Black History. As the landscape of the old Tiger Bay was changing, with the regeneration of what became known as Cardiff Bay, in 1988, with help from the Cardiff Bay Development Corporation, Butetown History & Arts Centre was created. Its purpose was to capture and celebrate the area's rich heritage and Patti made a considerable contribution to its educational work, in particular, using music, writing and storytelling.
As well as performing, Patti loved writing and was passionate about researching Black History and culture. In 2003 she collaborated with photographer Mathew Manning to produce Fractured Horizon [...]. 24. Starting with the XML mark-up for one of our most colourful nominees for the #DiversityProject of the #Bywgraffiadur. It's going to be a long-haul because it's filled to the brim with new names we haven't previously recorded (we have a database that holds the data to every single person mentioned in the Bywg -- at this point it's over 30k names and associated data), so it might take me more than a day to prepare this piece. But do keep your eyes peeled. It contains the story behind one of Wales's most unusual monuments dedicated to a person's memory.

  25. IRIS DE FREITAS BRAZAO (1896 - 1989), lawyer

'She enrolled with the Inner Temple Inns of Court in 1922 and was called to the bar in 1929, becoming the first female Barrister-at-Law in the Commonwealth Caribbean. She soon established herself as a barrister and was welcomed on her first appearance in the Supreme Court. She was the defense attorney in a 1932 murder case and saw her client acquitted, winning praise from the judge for her advocacy. She joined the civil service as a Temporary Legal Assistant in the Attorney General's Chamber and from April 1934 became the first female crown prosecutor in British Guiana.' -- Fiona Davies

  26. I'm in the middle of preparing for an upcoming creative community workshop where we are going to create imagined portraits of historical people of colour from and in Wales. As part of that, I am currently creating a humongous image bank that can be raided by the participants for inspiration. And I may have found my all-time favourite and most hilarious juxtaposition of portraits from the wonderful world of the "musical portrait" -- meet gentle "The Banjo Lesson" (1893) which had been preceded by "The Bagpipe Lesson" (1892) both painted by Henry Ossawa Tanner.

  27. ELISABETH DE SAEDELEER (1902 - 1972), textile artist
'The de Saedeleer family eventually moved back to Belgium in the spring of 1921. After their return, they established themselves in Etikhove and named their new home 'Villa Tynlon' after their Welsh one. The first project they undertook was the founding of their own Arts and Crafts studio in Etikhove, which would become a centre of weaving techniques in the Belgian modernist era, thus building on what they had learned in #Wales. Elisabeth took charge of the workplace. She transferred the designs to the actual size required and painted the sample cards herself. In the early years of the studio, she produced tapestry, tableware, clothing and furnishings. Her predilection for both subtle geometric forms and soft colour tones is in analogy with the works of Rennie Mackintosh and derives from her time spent as an exile in Britain.' -- Caterina Verdickt

IAN HAMILTON BURTON (Archimandrite Barnabas) (1915 - 1996), Orthodox priest

'In 1956, Burton visited Paris, where he met Père Denis, an Orthodox monk who followed the western rite. The spiritual friendship between the two men had a decisive effect on Burton's life. Under Denis's influence Burton came to see in the Orthodox Church the continuation of the undivided Church founded by Christ. In 1960 he was received into the Orthodox Church and ordained priest a few months later, becoming the first Welsh Orthodox priest since the Great Schism of 1054. It was at this point that he took the monastic name Barnabas and was given the title Archimandrite. He spent some time in Paris, reciting the Benedictine office daily and joining in Byzantine rite services. Eventually he was to move from Western Rite Orthodoxy to the Byzantine Rite.' -- Ruth Gooding

Lady ELEANOR CHARLOTTE BUTLER (1739 - 1829), one of the 'Ladies of Llangollen'
'She was educated at a Benedictine convent at Cambrai, and was unconventional for her time, showing no interest in men or getting married after returning to Kilkenny, and preferring studying. Sarah Ponsonby, who was orphaned at the age of seven, was being plagued by unwanted attention from her uncle. 'The silver screen came calling in 1919 when she made two films in America. Valley of the Giants starred Wallace Reid and involved rival logging companies battling for Redwood trees, with a romance thrown in. You're Fired also starred Wallace Reid. Lilian played minor parts in both films. In April 1920 Lilian became involved in a Welsh production once more, but only for a six-night run. 34. Forget Downton and Dynasty! The Bulkeleys of #Anglesey is where it's at!
'[T]he family gradually grew in importance, till one of them, RICHARD (died 1546 or early 1547), was knighted (about 1534), and his brother ARTHUR (died 1552) became bishop of Bangor. The greatest of these early knights was undoubtedly the third, RICHARD (died 1621), ... friend of queen Elizabeth and bitter antagonist to the earl of Leicester's schemes in #Wales. For a generation after his death, the affairs of Baron Hill went under a cloud; the alleged poisoning of the 2nd knight (RICHARD, died 1645), the marriage of his widow to the alleged poisoner ..., the long-drawn and inconclusive trials at Great Sessions, followed by a number of deaths in the elder line that brought THOMAS (died 1659), younger son of the third Sir Richard, to be undoubted lord of Baron Hill... 'At the age of 16, in 1875, Davies went to the newly-founded Welsh colony in Patagonia. He returned to Wales in 1891 [and in 1892 was editor of Yr Athrofa, in which ' Anturiaethau yn Nhir y Cewri,' which was published in English as Adventures in the Land of Giants, appeared as a serial]. In 1898 he visited western Australia, where he spent four years. In both countries he made a study of the native populations, but also did much to further the spiritual and cultural movements among the English and Welsh colonists. On his return, apart from a brief visit to western Australia in 1907 and a visit to Spain and France in 1924, he spent the remaining years of his life in Wales, devoting himself entirely to the study of Welsh history, folk-lore, and genealogy.' -- William Williams

  39. The possibly by far most unexpected find in my search for new names to add to our list of new articles for the #Bywgraffiadur is probably the Reverend Peter Jones, or by his birth name KahkewAquonaby. He was born in 1831 to a Mississauga Ojibwe woman and a Welsh father. Following his conversion to Methodism, he became a missionary, preaching in Ojibwe and English.

So, long story short: are there #historians and @histodons of #Religion, #FirstNations in #Canada here on Mastodon who feel like writing up this man's biography for inclusion in the Dictionary of Welsh Biography?
