    Le Mont is strategically placed on the French Coast, which is why a succession of French monarchs maintained and strengthened its military defences, keeping a garrison there. During the #HundredYearsWar (1337-1453CE) Le Mont was the only part of western and northern France to avoid occupation by the English. Even during the #WarsOfReligion (1562-1598), the Abbey never fell to the Protestant Huguenots, despite being besieged.
