But tell me again how the NHS can't afford to give flu vaccines to people under 65?

Well, isn't it lucky then that the entire history of giving the police new powers is that they never, ever abuse them.

  5. "Patients clogging A&E with hiccups, sore throats and other niggles"

Yes, that's what will happen if it's impossible to get a GP appointment.

Maybe the government should fund general practice properly rather than blaming patients?

  10. It's not immediately obvious to me that scrapping jury trials will clear the court backlog.

What is obvious to me, however, is that scrapping jury trials will make it much easier to secure convictions of people accused of breaking crazy authoritarian laws that no group of 12 reasonable people would ever agree should be illegal in the first place, like peacefully holding up a placard.

I wonder what the government's main motivation is here?

  11. @ReggieHere @ColmDonoghue If the Greens get corrupted then for sure we would need another party on the left.

But what we really don't need is 2 parties on the left. That will just have the #FrogFacedGrifter laughing all the way to Downing Street.

  12. Another pointless (and dangerous) gimmick to allow Starmer to pretend he wants to stop small boat crossings.

Once more for those at the back: the ONLY way to stop small boat crossings is to provide safe and legal routes to claim asylum.

  13. Why do you think the UK government is proposing to end jury trials for most offences?

A: It's a sensible move which will streamline the justice system

B: They know perfectly well that no jury would ever convict a granny for sitting peacefully while holding a placard and they want to lock up more grannies

I think one positive thing that can be said about yesterday's budget, is that, despite some disappointing things in it, taken as a whole, it wasn't an unmitigated clusterfuck.

I suspect Reeve's job is now safe until after the May elections, at which point, surely she and Starmer are toast.

  19. Since tractors are banned in Westminster, and since the #MetPolice have been so diligent about arresting anyone holding placards saying "I oppose genocide. I support PalestineAction", which are also banned, I assume that the police will be arresting all the tractor drivers today, right?

    Right?

  20. @CppGuy Yes, diabetes is bad, and if there were any evidence that the #sugartax reduced the burden of diabetes, then I would support it.

    But there isn't.

  21. @CppGuy I agree. Tobacco taxes are indeed regressive, but I think the public health argument on that one is strong enough to outweigh the tax equity argument.

If someone came up with some great evidence that the #SugarTax is also improving public health to a meaningful degree, then I would probably support it, but in the absence of that evidence, I think the tax equity argument wins for sugar.

The both-sidesism here is quite a thing to behold.

"Some people say Farage is a racist but Farage says he isn't".

Of course he's a racist. He's Nigel Fucking Farage. He has literally built his entire political career on racism.

Is it too much to ask that journalists just tell things like they are for once?

  23. I guess we're going to be talking about the #SugarTax a lot tomorrow.

This is your periodic reminder that it's mainly a tax-raising measure rather than a health thing. Proponents of it claim it makes people healthier, but there is almost no evidence to back that up.

It's also a highly regressive tax.

And from personal experience, the idea that it will encourage soft drinks manufacturers to formulate healthier low-sugar drinks seems unlikely. It's still hard to buy nice sugar-free soft drinks

  24. This is awesome news.

Gene therapy has been around for many years, but early attempts at it were largely unsuccessful.

It now looks like it may be a treatment whose time has finally come.

Obviously this is based on just 1 patient, and we need not only more patients but also much longer follow-up to be sure how useful it will be, but still, this looks really promising.

  29. So I've been looking at autocorrelation in the time series of UK CPI inflation this morning (because that's just what geeks do on Sunday mornings), and I noticed that there is little month-by-month autocorrelation, but a strong correlation with a 6-month lag and an even stronger one with a 12-month lag.

I guess the 12 month result is because some months tend to be similar each year (eg low inflation in January because of sales), but why the 6 month result?
