@CppGuy I agree. Tobacco taxes are indeed regressive, but I think the public health argument on that one is strong enough to outweigh the tax equity argument.

If someone came up with some great evidence that the #SugarTax is also improving public health to a meaningful degree, then I would probably support it, but in the absence of that evidence, I think the tax equity argument wins for sugar.

What I want to know if someone is going to convince me that the #SugarTax is a successful policy is whether it has any impact on health outcomes. Does it lead to less tooth decay? Fewer obesity-related diseases? Anything at all that could be described as a health outcome?

Those are the only things that matter. Show me the evidence that the sugar tax has benefited them, and I will be a fan. Without it, I remain sceptical.

Sugar consumption has been falling anyway, so children's sugar consumption was not halved by the intervention. Quite apart from the fact that going from 70g to 45g is not halving anyway by conventional standards in arithmetic, that doesn't take account of the secular trend.

When the authors adjusted for that, they found the reduction in sugar consumption was a little under 10%. Very different from halving.
