Heh, I wouldn't discount the use of goodwill shorteners like #Envs for badly formed URLs, as an exception. Although, when you copy from address bar, browsers would make sure to make link compatible with standard, so it's pretty rare you'd ever end up with such a URL.I had to use URL shortener yesterday to satisfy Youtube's parsing of my Matrix.to channel link. But parser on Mastodon is OK.

@feditips I so wish it wasn't this way. It seems such a waste of everyone's valuable time. And I don't even bother searching Mastodon anymore, I know better to waste my time that way as well.

This looks like a great option for now but I can't help but think that allowing everything in posts to be searchable as an option would be a better approach. That would do away with hashtags altogether.Some Mastodon instances have implemented a custom full text search feature like https://universeodon.com from https://github.com/VyrCossont/mastodon/pull/8 I've been using it lately and makes finding things that much easier.
I'm hoping to see adoption of a way to fulltext search being an instance option, opt-in and opt-out depending on the instance settings implemented by default soon.

It would be better if #MastodonWeb had an option to open external profiles through original instance by default (in new tab), especially once extensions like #FediAct become common.
Now that I think about it, this could be an idea for such extension. -
This is a very long, but incredibly informative thread on how the Fediverse works.
TL;DR, mastodon is the Fediverse as much as YouTube is the entire internet, which is to say, not at all.

If you want to follow someone on Mastodon and they are on a different server/instance than you, you can find them by entering their full address in the search bar. For instance, if you want to find Mike McCue and you’re not on Flipboard.social, search for ATmikeATflipboard.social.(replace AT with @)

If two mastodon accounts get merged, will the parameters of one account override the other?
Eg. if account X has 30 followers, and gets moved to account Y with 100 followers, will the merged/final account Z have 130 followers? 100? 30?

Some people assign new Follows to lists as they go along. Good advice. But sometimes we have lots of Follows to assign, or we may want to re-organise our #List categories.
@acbeers has developed a super useful #ListManager that lets you assign Follows to Lists in one big table. Each of your Follows is a row, each of your Lists is a column. You click to assign. Done.

Server admins could provide a list of recommended / like minded / interesting servers to look at. Maybe sites like #JoinMastodon and #FediGarden could then use those lists to create server independent entry points.
