that would be @vantablack and #fediact that saw that attack from way, way back

@FediTips Agree! I was just thinking of all the advantages of Mastodon (#OpenAccess, #RSS, culture...); improvements since I joined 18mths ago (*search*, animated GIFs displaying correctly, content cache issue derisked...); & the tools that helped me (#FediAct, resize-o-don, #JustMyToots...) - list far from complete, but I love it.
A personal website in compatible format, & easy ways of archiving, would be so complementary!

This is an annoying problem inherent with multi-instance apps but the good news is it goes away by installing the #fediact extension https://github.com/Lartsch/FediAct and/or using a mobile app like #Fedilab.
In both cases, the follow button will be injected and work for you on any instance for any user, fully seamlessly in one click, like magic, as you rightly expect it should!
It's unfortunate that this is not communicated to new users, because Mastodon sucks without it.

https://github.com/Lartsch/FediAct
Anleitung:
1. Extension installieren
2. Extension öffnen (auf dessen Icon in der Menüleiste klicken)
3. Dort Euren eigenen Mastodon-Server eintragen, z.B. mastodon.social
Jetzt könnt Ihr auf anderen Instanzen Posts liken und boosten.

@jahed Maybe... But maybe not.
#FediAct extension is supposed to determine if the arbitrary site you visit is a Mastodon web interface, providing a shortcut where you don't have to manually add yet another site to whitelist. Hence the access to all websites and a smooth transition from random Mastodon post to actions on behalf of your Mastodon account.
I'm writing this, because I want you to imagine how this hypothetical "access per site" addition would work with extension like this.

Help, I am trying to make the switch to #Firefox for Android, but the #FediAct page says I need Firefox Nightly. This worries me because the app description says it's unstable. Is there any way to install this add-on with plain old Firefox for Android?
I am currently using Kiwi for Android, and here are the FediAct installation instructions that refer to Firefox Nightly: https://github.com/lartsch/FediAct
Edit: sounds like I should go ahead and use Firefox Nightly without worrying. Will give it a try!

@iambozdar #FediAct is helpful for following and interacting with posts on different servers https://github.com/lartsch/FediAct

Why are there so many projects with "Fedi" in its name, that only work with or are designed for #Mastodon? I think that's a bit confusing and misleading to be honest.
#Fedifetcher (Script) #Fedified (Website) #FediAct (Addon) etc. #Fediverse -

It is pretty annoying to deal with external instances when you just open the link. #FediAct web extension covers most of the Mastodon websites and redirects all replies, boosts and favorites done there, on my primary instance.
You just need that bridge that "connects" instances. Otherwise you have to trust that random instance to not include anything malicious in its source code, be it auto-clicker or data scrapping. I've covered kind of a similar exploit here: https://github.com/Lartsch/FediAct/issues/6
Websites alone don't get the power to see what link directs to without the server itself looking this up. Although, they might put such links through their search upon click, but in this case you compromise what you have just clicked.
Mastodon mobile apps, on the other hand, have all privileges to detect if the link leads to an external instance or not.

Potential refresh bug in Mastodon's Advanced-Web-Interface mode (multicolumn mode for browsers) when #SlowMode (timeline updates require a click) is enabled. (Both options are found in Preferences-Appearance)
I would appreciate feedback from other Advanced Web + Slow Mode users to confirm whether it's just my particular setup (e.g. the #FediAct addon) or something more common.
ISSUE: Enabling Advanced Web Interface adds multiple columns and what was the single main view in default Mastodon install becomes a Profile column while Home, Notifications and additional columns (e,g, hashtags) displaying running events. When "Slow Mode" is enabled, instead of autorefreshing, Home and extra columns require a click to refresh. (useful for those who are uncomfortable with tickertape style constantly running view)
This all works as designed, but the Profile column has no manual refresh option. Once I view another user's feed/timeline there it will never be refreshed (during current sign-in session) even if that user posts frequent toots, replies or boosts. (Without "Slow Mode" enabled the Profile pane refreshes loaded sources with the latest updates.)
The result is that the affected user isn't seeing the activity that is actually happening on the account they think they are viewing "live".
I don't know how many people use Mastodon via the browser in Advanced Web + Slow Mode, but probably more than just a handful.

#StreetPass and #FediAct together make a potent combo. I just reviewed my list today and picked up a few new follows... just from regular web browsing!
StreetPass finds their masto pages, and FediAct lets you follow them without searching. This is super awesome!
Very cool add-ons @tvler and @lartsch!

About the on-hover profile previews:
This can probably also be developed as a browser #extension. Maybe even as part of #FediAct or #Graze. So if someone knows #javascript and #css, please be my guest!

As you maybe remember, I'm a satisfied user of the Firefox extension #FediAct (also available for Chromium based browsers).
https://github.com/lartsch/FediAct
Today I found a similar extension, named '#Graze for Mastodon'. It has lesser features than FediAct, but on the other hand it has multi-account-support (something I don't need). So although I will keep using FediAct, if you want something simpler plus multi-account-support, I advise:
-
@shoq @Green_Footballs yes, please! Also keep an eye on the #fediact and #FediAct, which does a lot of what #tootski does, but better. :)
I feel strongly that a great browser extension should be a core part of the Mastodon experience, to help knit together disparate servers. "Install a browser extension to help" ought to be something that new desktop users hear along with hashtag and alt-text advice.
-
@feditips @podkaynelives @PleaseCaption to that I will add: if you’re a desktop user, consider installing a browser extension such as #tootski or #fediact to help smooth out the edges between Mastodon servers.

@feditips
It would be better if #MastodonWeb had an option to open external profiles through original instance by default (in new tab), especially once extensions like #FediAct become common.
Now that I think about it, this could be an idea for such extension. -
If you use Mastodon through a computer, you can install a special browser extension called FediAct which lets you directly interact with other servers' websites:
:firefox: FediAct for Firefox
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/fediact/:google: FediAct for Chome
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/fediact/lmpcajpkjcclkjbliapfjfolocffednmThis can be very useful if you are following web links to other servers, for example in the listings on https://fedi.directory
FediAct is free and open source:

I have been using the popular "Mastodon – Simplified Federation!" browser extension for a while to make it easier to follow people on other #mastodon instances.
BUT now I switched to #FediAct https://github.com/lartsch/FediAct which seems to work more seamlessly, without any extra popups. It even lets me directly follow or vote on polls on other servers, and the follow button on others servers correctly becomes Unfollow if I already follow them. Theres 2 other extensions: Graze and Roam, anyone tried?

[ #Desktop Users: Reveal]
Curious as to everyone's favorite #Chrome #extensions, definitely looking for #recommendations. Here's a screenshot of the ones I currently have, including #FediAct
My main gripe with certain 'popular' ones is that they require $ yet many users are reporting sub-par performance or broken feature sets.
Mainly curious about video downloaders which seems to be a general shytshow. Also 'To Do Lists'
[#Mobile Users] not even sure if my question applies or not.
-
A very useful Firefox & Chrome extension for interacting with Mastodon accounts on different instances.
No more manual copying the URL before you can boost/like.
-
Update: Don't know if you're on a desktop or phone, but on my desktop, when I hit reply on the other server, it resolves back to my homepage, brings the comment from the other instance into my Getting Started panel, and opens up a reply comment as though it was on my server.
-
I am over-the-moon with this new #Browser #Extension, #FediAct for #Chrome. Makes interacting with other #instances totally seamless.
No more copy URL, paste into search, then basically interacting with a shadow profile just to like/boost/follow.
Love this #AddOn (I am not associated with this in any way other than using the heck out of it!) Edit: Sorry, extra "a" in AddOn.

@kmpanthagani I was a newbie at same time & experience transformed by installing #FediAct - no more copy-paste! https://mstdn.social/@feditips/109509269819645456 https://github.com/lartsch/FediAct
Developer https://mstdn.social/@lartsch@infosec.exchange
Please ask for #FediTips installation help if needed.There was definitely a #LearningCurve here & I wish this was easier for new users, but I have found it v rewarding & features fast improving. Please persevere, we need #pandemic expertise on the #fediverse!

@isaacs @hazelweakly @jbenjamint @futurebird @bobdobberson
When browsing #MastodonWeb on desktop, I highly recommend an extension called #FediAct. It acts as an intermediary for interactions made on other instances to be sent back to your home #Mastodon instance. Once you install such thing, you won't have to think about it twice. :rickhey:
