It's becoming increasingly obvious to me lately that if we want people to actually wake up and realize that corporate social media apps are not good for them, and to come over to the Open Social Web (fedi) instead, some of us are going to need to actually spread our ideas on those corporate platforms.
There needs to a whole community of people on Instagram and TikTok and YouTube and whatever the hell else constantly talking about how you can get away from those platforms and join the better side of the internet.
If we want people to do something, we need to meet them where they're at, use the language that they understand. Speak their cultural register to explain the alternatives.
And this doesn't just apply to fedi either. If we wanna talk about the fact that adversarial interoperability is illegal, we're gonna need to find some words for that which can be understood by non-tech people, because "interoperability" isn't exactly an easy term to work with if you're a journalist or an accountant or literally anything except for a tech person.
To fight enshittification, we're gonna have to get a lot better at talking about it with normal people. The revolution of the nerds isn't going to happen, we aren't large enough to make change on our own. We need to get the regular people to help us.

Hardcore nachtraven zullen gemerkt hebben dat Mastodon Belgium en Mastodon Vlaanderen er uit gelegen hebben tussen 3u en 4u30.
Aan deze nachtraven: excuses voor de downtime.
Intussen zijn alle servers gepatched tegen de recente golf van vulnerabilities en zelfs de filesystem check (goed voor 99% van de downtime) bracht geen enkel probleem naar boven.
Aan bitrot doen we (nog steeds) niet mee 😎

Zelf ben ik (als relatief irrelevante politicus) een tijd geleden gestopt met X. Wat best een offer was, want in de tijd dat Twitter nog minder giftig was bouwde ik er een leuk netwerk met een groot bereik op.
Maar X werd een extreem "Asshole Amplification Platform".
Niet alleen namen intimidaties toe en werd er nauwelijks tegen opgetreden. Het werd onder Musk ook een platform dat met haar ontransparante algoritme extreemrechts actief in de kaart speelt en een vrijplaats werd voor giftige botnetwerken die o.a. verkiezingen proberen te beïnvloeden. En de X AI bot Grok kleedt mensen zonder hun instemming virtueel uit, zelfs kinderen. Ik wil daar niets mee te maken hebben.
Er is maar één echt onafhankelijk en actief sociaal netwerk, en dat is Mastodon. Mede omdat Mastodon geen verslavende algoritmen gebruikt is het nog minder populair dan Instagram en X, maar het is echt veel prettiger en inhoudelijker. Gelukkig wordt het in toenemende mate omarmd door de Nederlandse overheid, bijvoorbeeld via social.overheid.nl (bekijk wie daar actief is op de live-feed https://social.overheid.nl/public/local ).

Het zou goed zijn als iedereen met een website die vanwege bereik nog niet helemaal weg durft te gaan bij de gifitige socials (daaronder mogen we ook Instagram en Facebook rekenen) tenminste net zo actief is op een netwerk dat niet giftig is. Tot slot: Lieve journalisten, jullie verantwoordelijkheid is nog groter. Quote politici, onderzoekers en alle andere actoren met een interressante mening wanneer mogelijk op hun vrije Mastodon accounts in plaats van Twitter of Instagram. Jullie focus op X blijft de troef van Musk die dit platform van bedreigingen in stand houdt.

Die App von Mastodon ungeeignet für Instanzenbetreiber?
Als Betreiber mehrerer Instanzen habe ich versucht die App von Mastodon zu nutzen.
Da aber offensichtlich eine reine Anmeldung auf (m)einer bestehenden Instanz nicht vorgesehen ist, sondern nur das Erstellen eines neuen Kontos habe ich die Installation abgebrochen.
Eine Installation so zu gestalten ist extrem hinderlich im vorankommen...

I'll be attending this Philly Mastodon Migration Party a week from Wednesday to represent Jawns.club and invite people to join our server (among other options). There will be several activities to help people socialize while learning the basics of the fediverse.

Make a verified Mastodon instance like the German government (social.bund.de) - there it's clear, everyone is verified.
Normal people DON'T wanna have their real name in social media. Especially not in these times with rising nazi scum...
It's a security risk for a lot of people.
