The grinches among us—present company included—complain every year about how soon is too soon to be playing #Christmas music and much of the Christmas music itself. (Much eye-rolling is involved.) But, I must confess, they could start playing this one the day after Halloween all the way thru January and you would not hear a peep out of me. Not only is it not Christmas for yours truly without it, it also brings back fond memories of my Blockbuster Video days around this time of year and this playing on constant rotation.
Oh, and yeah: it inspired all kinds of people to further discover jazz, including Stu Hamm (whose solo electric bass version of “Linus and Lucy” is simply breathtaking); #CharlieBrownChristmas is in the Grammy Hall of Fame; was added to the National Recording Registry of the Library Congress; and is the tenth best-selling Christmas/holiday album of the SoundScan era. A timeless classic indeed.
Released December 1965. https://youtube.com/watch?v=7EdlTA5n2h8&feature=share

'Anything that can be built can be taken down': The largest dam removal in US history is complete – what happens next?
The #KlamathRiver is free of four huge dams for the first time in generations. But for the #Yurok tribe, the river's restoration is only just beginning – starting with 18 billion seeds.
by Lucy Sheriff, September 3, 2024
"This is decades and decades in the making," says Thompson. 'We were told it was never going to happen. That it was foolish to even ask for one removal. We were asking for four.'
"The #KlamathBasin covers more than 12,000 square miles (31,000 sq km) in southern Oregon and northern California, and was home to the JC Boyle, Copco 1, Copco 2 and Iron Gate dams, all owned by #PacifiCorp, an electric utilities company. The Klamath was once the third-largest salmon producing river on the US's West Coast before the construction of the dams blocked fish from accessing almost 400 miles (640km) of critical river habitat for almost 100 years.
"Fall #ChinookSalmon numbers plummeted by more than 90% and spring chinook by 98%. #SteelheadTrout, #CohoSalmon and #PacificLamprey numbers also saw drastic declines, and the Klamath tribes in the upper basin have been without their salmon fishery for a century, since the completion of #Copco 1 in 1922. The situation became so bad that Yurok tribe – who are known as the salmon people – began importing Alaskan salmon for their annual salmon festival, traditionally held to celebrate the first return of fall chinook salmon to the Klamath River.
"The dams also had a severe impact on #WaterTemperature and quality – growth of #ToxicAlgae behind two of the dams resulted in health warnings against water contact.
"'It was painful,' says Willard Carlson, a Yurok elder who is known as a #RiverWarrior and was part of the inter-generational campaign. 'All those years seeing our river damaged like that. I remember as a kid we'd have other people from nearby tribes making fun of our river. 'Oh, you're Yurok, your river is dirty.' For us, the #dams were a monument to the [#coloniser] people who conquered us."

"Restoring the land
But something that does need "a helping hand is the restoration of 2,200 acres (890ha) of land that is above ground for the first time in a century following the emptying of four reservoirs.
"'Removing the dams is one thing, restoring the land is quite another,' says Thompson, a civil engineer and part of the crew working on the restoration project – which is being managed by Resource Environmental Solutions, an ecological restoration company."

So who could guess that the power consumption of LLM querying is largely because it assaults all we have ever learned about delivering content at internet scale.
Since all that LLMs are are overcomplicated ways to deliver content that already exists with low quality (in terms of accuracy and often relevance).
At the same time web search has also degraded mostly because of the removal of query parameters as well as the polluting of content.

@bbcnews doing a wonderful job today showing the human stories of people who are providing millions of hours of #unpaidcare to disabled family and friends. These are my people, my tribe. We are amazingly strong and inventive, robust and sensitive, and could do well in any job with our experience. We are NOT to be reduced to being labelled '#EconomicallyInactive', because that is a lie - we save the system billions and allow others to have their careers - and insulting!

Notes and links from Thur 21 May: https://notes.peteashton.com/2026/05/21/notes-and-links-from-thur.html
Big day today. Spent the afternoon at the allotment with Fi and Lucy moving the #compost hexagon and filling it up. We’ve been putting this off for a few weeks, never finding the right time when my fatigue wasn’t an issue, and today was the last opportunity before summer finally kicks in tomorrow. So I girded my loins, paced myself and we did it.
Did I make a mistake? Probably. I feel OK right now but post-exertion fatigue can kick in up to 36 hours later so tomorrow will be the tell. But was it worth it? Yeah. I got outside, I did some fixes to the hexagon (which was only a prototype when I built it nearly three years ago), and I got to do #composting stuff, which is my happy place. Also I bumped into chum Kerry and her kid who I hadn’t seen properly in ages, so that was a delight.
