Excerpt: "According to the province of B.C., plant biodiversity in #BritishColumbia is unmatched in Canada, with at least 2,500 native vascular plant species, in addition to thousands of lichens, mosses and fungi.
"Individuals can help support the land by planting native plants in pots on their balconies and gardens, said Chalifoux.
" 'Why would you plant a native plant here? Because host nations have a relationship with that, or this specific plant is a host plant for a larva, a native butterfly, that needs to eat only this plant to survive,' said Chalifoux.
" 'The land is hurting. One way we can help the land is by incorporating native plants.'
"Chalifoux said though things are changing, not many municipalities have policies to ensure a percentage of native plants are included in city landscaping.
"#CBCIndigenous asked the City of #Vancouver if it had any policies around the number of native plants required to be planted in urban planning.
"A City of Vancouver spokesperson said in a statement that the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation is working to increase native plants in #UrbanSpaces and considers a number of factors in planning, including maintenance, resilience, and canopy cover, and consults with local #FirstNations.
"A prime example of this is the addition of #PacificYew to the Stanley Park Restoration initiative, upon receiving feedback from local First Nations," said the statement.
"The city said it has also provided native plants for #EcologicalRestoration in Vancouver parks to non-profits and community groups that hold community planting events."

Fri 3 Jul 2026"As the symphony of birdsong known as the dawn chorus draws to its annual close at the end of June, the Guardian has recreated an audio landscape from across the past 50 years to try to portray the variety and plentitude of birdsong we have lost since tens of millions more birds were in full voice. The calls and songs of a variety of species have been isolated to build an illustration of the dawn chorus, representing a year in each decade, from now back to the abundance of the 1970s.
"In April 1976, as the dawn chorus was in full swing, Labour’s Harold Wilson resigned as prime minister and James Callaghan took his place. Today, while remarkably similar political manoeuvrings are taking place, the soundscape of the #NaturalWorld is utterly changed to one of absences, omissions and loss."

February 17, 2023ONEIDA – "Part of Gov. #TonyEvers’ proposed budget includes $875,000 to help fund the Oneida Nation’s environmental restoration project on the reservation.
"Over the past year, the tribe has restored about 3,000 acres of #wetlands, #grasslands, #prairies and #forests on the reservation.
"The governor’s budget includes an annual investment of $175,000 for five years for continuing the Oneida Nation’s #HabitatRestoration work and bird monitoring project just west of #GreenBay.
"'We know that #nature can provide for itself if allowed to. A years-long restoration of Oneida’s lands in Northeastern Wisconsin has led to improvements in water quality and the return of #wildlife,' said Oneida Chairman Tehassi Hill in a statement. 'We appreciate Governor Evers for supporting our work to restore and protect Wisconsin’s natural spaces.'
"The Oneida Nation also started a bird monitoring project on its restoration sites in coordination with the Northeastern Wisconsin #Audubon Society and UW-Green Bay’s Cofrin Center for Biodiversity to research how birds are responding to the tribe’s conservation efforts.
"'We’ve witnessed firsthand as state-threatened bird species, like the #HenslowsSparrow, have returned to restored Oneida Nation lands, an incredible testament to the importance of this restoration work,' said Erin Giese, president of the Northeastern Wisconsin Audubon Society, in a statement.

"Evers’ budget proposal also includes a $200,000 investment in restoring and protecting natural wild rice areas in Wisconsin.
"Experts say wild rice is an essential food source for many of the #MigratorBirds in the area, including many species of #ducks, #pheasants, #owls, #cranes, #geese and #songbirds.
"The plants also help to improve the #environment.
"'Emergent plants, including wild rice, help promote #water quality through the filtering and storage of nutrients and slow down wave action in the #CoastalWetlands of Green Bay,' said Dr. Amy Carrozzino-Lyon, University of Wisconsin-Green Bay restoration project manager in the natural and applied sciences department. 'A diversity of native wetland plants helps the community function at its best.'"
