"The area of the #NationalTrust’s #HolnicoteEstate where rivers have been returned to their natural courses and #wetlands have been restored have remained green and lush during the five heatwaves across the summer. In contrast, the surrounding countryside has become parched and brown.
"The two interventions are significant #rewilding projects and provide strong evidence that #NatureBasedSolutions can protect against wildfires. This contradicts claims by some rightwing commentators, who have blamed rewilding for causing #wildfires.
" 'Nature is providing solutions to some of the biggest challenges facing society today,' said Ben Eardley, the project manager at the Holnicote estate. 'For generations as a nation we’ve drained wetlands, straightened rivers and moved water off the land as quickly as possible. Here, we’ve reversed that approach and the results are remarkable.
" 'By reconnecting river systems with the surrounding area and creating natural sponges in the landscape, we’ve created a system that stores water during #drought, keeping wetlands and the surrounding habitats healthy, and slows water during storms and periods of extreme rainfall, helping to protect villages from the risk of flooding downstream.'
"Eardley said the same natural processes that helped wildlife recover were also helping communities adapt to #ClimateBreakdown.
"More than 90% of the UK’s wetlands have been lost over the last century and restoring the habitats to make them wet again is becoming increasingly important for #ClimateAdaptation, #WaterSecurity and #NatureRecovery.
"Harry Bowell, the National Trust’s director of land and nature, called on the government to boost its efforts to invest in nature-based solutions to help the country become more resilient."

#MangroveForests are healing after decades of human destruction

June 4, 2026"The world's coastal #mangrove forests, which protect millions of people from storms - and soak up vast amounts of planet-warming gases - are staging an unexpected comeback, scientists find.
"For decades these swampy trees had been declining rapidly as they were cleared for fish farms and housing.
"But a new study shows that since 2010 the world has been gaining more mangroves than it has been losing - driven by stronger #LegalProtections and increased #PublicAwareness of their importance, sparked by disasters such as the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.
"The researchers say the key factor though is the remarkable capacity of these forests to #regenerate naturally once humans stop chopping them down.
"Mangroves are one of the world's unsung #environmental heroes.
"Not only do they store up to five times more #CarbonDioxide than land-based forests, but their tangled roots can also slow down waves and protect coastal communities from #StormSurges and #tsunamis.
"These same roots provide a perfect nursery for many species of fish and other #MarineLife - protecting them from predators and providing ample food.
"These benefits, though, have come under serious threat over the past century as the rise of fish farming, agriculture and the expansion of coastal cities and towns have seen mangroves chopped down and rapidly removed.
"From the 1980s to 2010, over 12,000 sq km (4,600 sq miles) of mangroves were cleared or destroyed across #Asia, #Africa and the #Americas - an area the size of Jamaica.
"However, the new study shows a real reversal of that trend, particularly over the last decade. The total net losses - the forest lost and not replaced - since the 1980s have now been reduced to around 849 sq km (328 sq miles)."

"The #WashingtonState Department of Natural Resources and the #SquaxinIslandTribe have announced a partnership to conserve the #SquaxinIsland Kelp Bed, the last major kelp bed in South Puget Sound.
"DNR and the Squaxin Island Tribe will work to surround the kelp bed with a priority habitat zone, try to reduce #environmental stresses to improve the kelp bed’s health, and partner with #PugetSoundRestorationFund on future #restoration projects, according to a news release.
"Since 2013, DNR and Squaxin Island staff have seen a 97% decline in the kelp bed, which holds both ecological and cultural significance. In #Oregon, the #coastline lost more than two-thirds of its canopy of #BullKelp.
"'We recognize how important it is to protect this critical resource,' said #KrisPeters, Squaxin Island Tribe chairman, in a statement. '#Squaxins can’t do it alone; it takes us all coming together as partners. That is why this local inter-governmental agreement is so important and monumental.'
"The Squaxin Island Kelp Bed is the first habitat DNR is prioritizing in its statewide #KelpForest and #Eelgrass Meadow Health and Conservation Plan, which state legislation directed DNR to hatch in response to the loss of bull kelp and eelgrass on the Washington coastline.
"The plan’s goal is to conserve and restore at least 10,000 acres of kelp forest and eelgrass meadow habitat by 2040.
"Restoration efforts will initially focus on three pilot sub-basins: South Puget Sound, the Eastern Strait of Juan de Fuca and Grays Harbor. As DNR works toward its 10,000-acre goal, it intends to explore conservation and recovery in all sub-basins, according to DNR’s website.
"'Squaxin people have been stewarding these waters and lands for thousands of years,' Peters said in a statement. '#KelpBeds have also been stewarding these waters for thousands of years, providing nourishment and a critical ecosystem for the many plants, animals, and fish of the #SalishSea.'"
