I was today years old when I learned about the 1965 Vince Guaraldi Trio album "A Charlie Brown Christmas".

Wonderful interpretations of traditional holiday music, and apparently one of the best-selling Jazz albums of all-time, so quite how I missed this up to now I've no idea.

Found myself listening to various covers and the original of #VinceGuaraldi 's classic from the #CharlieBrownChristmas movie, Skating. I made it a goal a year or two ago to learn the piano part in time for the holiday that year. I picked up his transcription and set to work on it, and the one thing I was struck by was the tempo. It's SO FAST. I got it to about 80% or so when I was working on it regularly, but even that was luck and sheer muscle memory. 😄

Tonight as I was listening to various covers, I stumbled on the recordings of takes of this recording that have been released, and the beginning of this one tells me he knew it was fucking fast and even he struggled occasionally.

I also deeply appreciate his skill at powering through flubs. This take has one in the main theme after the solo bits, and he just carried on as if nothing happened. Love it!

Never too early for a little Vince Guaraldi Trio. This well-known album arrived yesterday so I had to give it a spin today -- to check out the quality and look for warping, etc :) (of course).

Hard to tell in my dim office but it's actually a very nice translucent green.

Spinning it after a good cleaning. See the paper dust and crumbs on the Discwasher brush. Side A plays well!, Listening with headphones so as to not annoy the rest of the household with holiday music too soon. Side B is nice... though the snare-brushes on 'Christmas time is here (vocals)' almost sound static-laden or noisy. A tad distracting.. but I'm being picky here.

The grinches among us—present company included—complain every year about how soon is too soon to be playing #Christmas music and much of the Christmas music itself. (Much eye-rolling is involved.) But, I must confess, they could start playing this one the day after Halloween all the way thru January and you would not hear a peep out of me. Not only is it not Christmas for yours truly without it, it also brings back fond memories of my Blockbuster Video days around this time of year and this playing on constant rotation.

Oh, and yeah: it inspired all kinds of people to further discover jazz, including Stu Hamm (whose solo electric bass version of “Linus and Lucy” is simply breathtaking); #CharlieBrownChristmas is in the Grammy Hall of Fame; was added to the National Recording Registry of the Library Congress; and is the tenth best-selling Christmas/holiday album of the SoundScan era. A timeless classic indeed.
