#CloudFlare - please stop asking me to prove that I'm a human. You wouldn't recognize one even if they smacked you in the face. Now it's your turn to prove that you're not a #menace on the #internet.
#WebAdmins please take note. All that "enhanced security" comes at the cost of many of your visitors being harassed into turning back or being outright blocked. Digital #discrimination at its finest!

Use the appropriate solutions.
#Volumes are automatically allocated and managed on chosen storage providers.
#Configs allow you to distribute read-only configurations in complex environments, possibly with specialized tools.
#Secrets are like configs, but with extra security. It can also be integrated to secrets managers.

No! It isn't a real term - yet. And Yes! I just made it up!
When normal people do natural things that upset the profits of ultra-capitalists, you get hit with nasty, incriminating and demeaning terms like #jaywalking and #piracy. But when those same uber-rich use tech to squeeze every penny out of you without providing any extra value by locking down devices with tech, those draconian measures get downplayed under innocuous sounding terms like #SoftwareTethering?

Is it just me, or is there an entire army on the #OrangeSite dedicated to defending absolutely reprehensible behavior from #BigTech companies? I don't understand the motivation for seemingly ordinary people to defend activities that egregiously invade into and erode their personal #liberties. Or is there some other motivation that we're not aware of?

#Gentoo #Linux has become my daily driver over the last few months. The biggest advantage of Gentoo isn't the bragging rights (that still belongs to the #Arch users 😆 ). It's the fact that it's damn easy to package anything for the #Portage #package_management system. EClasses handle a lot of corner cases for you. And development tooling is top notch (I will be release one of my own soon).
For those who are familiar with #packaging on other #distros, do you know of anything more convenient?

Fighting with the #BorrowChecker is a rite of passage for new #Rustaceans. But once you get to know the hardware and the borrow checker, you start to see why it complains all the time. It makes you wonder - "Could I have prevented these mistakes on my own?". Clearly not - you manage to trigger it all the time, after all! #Rust is a wonderful gift! :ferris:

The key here is to use a fluctuating or moving magnetic field. It induces #EddyCurrents in any conducting material and both interact, making it possible to move non-magnetic conductors. This is what happens in induction motors. Here is another cool demo:

Many people are arguing that #Magneto couldn't have moved the Reichsmark he used to kill Sebastian Shaw (#XMen: First Class), since it's mostly silver.
#Ferromagnetic materials aren't the only substances that can be moved or manipulated by magnetic fields - anything electrically conductive is enough. #InductionMotors use rotors that are non-magnetic. That includes anything from household fans to Maglev trains.

#GIMP - the venerable image editor, had promised a major makeover with with non-destructive editing (with #GEGL) and advanced color space management (with #babl). That was more than 20 years ago!
While GEGL and babl were partially integrated with GIMP 2.x over the years, the full integration was left for GIMP 3.0. And now, it looks like v3.0 will finally be released in a few months!

News that Youtube is selectively #throttling #Firefox is generating a lot of discussion. The only thing surprising is that many are surprised. Have a look at the history:
- Sabotaging Firefox's marketshare: https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1116871245021220875.html
- Integrating tracking into Chrome
- Introduction of #ManifestV3 that lobotomized ad-blockers on Chrome
- Attempt at gaslighting users into uninstalling ad-blockersWe knew that Firefox users were in for a punishment sooner or later. This is just a confirmation.

You get subjected to draconian tech like #DRM, #TrustedComputing, #RemoteAttestation and #PartsPairing in the name of protecting IP. What about your IP? The code you write, the paintings you make and even your online comments get fed into #AI and reproduced wholly or in part elsewhere, in the name of #fairuse. What is common to these seemingly contradictory, if not hypocritical measures? Those who promote it have the money to deploy them in mass and fight you in court if you challenge them.

Simon M. Sze (1936-2023)
Simon #Sze's name may sound familiar if you're in the field of Electronics. Sze authored some of the most authoritative text books on #semiconductor devices. He also has some impressive achievements in his name - including the co-invention of floating-gate non-volatile memory devices.
A pioneer in every way. He may be gone, but his legacy lives on. RIP!

Here is a tip for anybody learning #Git and is confused by #merging and #rebasing
We all know git stores commits as snapshots. However, when it comes to merging and rebasing, it's better to think of commits as #diffs that introduce changes (the thing you get with git diff). You are actually combining, splitting, rearranging or deleting diffs - not snapshots.
This requires a slight change in your mental model of git. But the operations will make sense immediately.

The #Matrix project is re-licensing its servers (synapse, dendrite, ..) from #Apache to #AGPL, following the spate of similar measures by many other projects. Good that they didn't choose a non-FOSS license.
But they're also changing the sign-off from #DCO to #CLA. That is very disappointing.
PS: If you are starting a FOSS project, consider adopting a #copyleft license. It should be abundantly clear by now that the push for permissive licenses is an attempt to extract free labour.

And Google has abandoned #WebEnvironmentIntegrity. Yay! The End!
Mm... No! Google has 'heard your feedback' and has instead created 'WebView Media Integrity API' that is 'narrowly scoped' and 'only targets' #AndroidWebView.
Think about it - now they don't have to listen to anyone's 'feedback'. And if you think the scope is going to remain narrow, boy! I have news for you! #FLoC/Topics anyone? Fool me once - shame on you! Fool me twice...
