    Fri, May 30th 2025 at 5:34 PM

PORTLAND (WGME) -- "Two men, who had been working in Maine's trade industry, vanished Monday morning.

"They're allegedly now in the hands of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE.

"Their partners say it has been a nightmare to even nail down where they're held or why.

"Lucas Segobia and Marcos Henrique, both Brazilian nationals, were driving into Maine for work early Monday morning.

"Segobia’s fiancée, Laura Anderson, says she was on the phone with him when a Maine state trooper pulled them over at the #I95TollPlaza.

"The reason was an 'off-center' license plate.

Anderson says state police turned the men over to Border Patrol."

  2. First time trying this one, from my favorite brewery in #PortlandME. A slightly sweet, strongly melony #NEIPA from #BelleflowerBrewing. This might be one of my new favorites. #CaturdayBeer #BeersOfMastodon

  3. More signs from #PortlandME #April19th protest. One of my favorites -- "They tried to bury us / they forgot / we were seeds" (with an illustration of colorful flowers).

  4. One of my favorite signs was a painting of an emoji that's orange, with an angry frowny face and yellow hair (Trump).

  5. When I first moved to #PortlandME (back in the late 1990s), it was $750 a month for a three-bedroom apartment in a triple decker building which included a front room (parlor), living room (old dining room), a kitchen, a backroom (pantry), a porch, and basement storage! Now the same unit (assuming one can find one to rent, since many are now condos) would be $4,000 a month! No wonder just about everyone I know has moved away, and the couple friends who are left were able to buy years ago, but are getting priced out because of property taxes (one friend works 2 jobs just to cover their ass, and is thinking about selling).

  13. #PortlandME #ChildrensMuseum loses federal grant intended for #WabanakiHistory programs

by Gillian Graham, Portland Press Herald, Maine
Sat, April 12, 2025 at 4:06 AM EDT

"The Trump administration has terminated a nearly $250,000 grant the Children's Museum and Theatre of Maine was using for programs about #Wabanaki culture and history.

"The Portland museum was awarded the money last year from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and was already deep in the process of developing a project that includes programs for schoolchildren and other visitors, curriculum support for teachers and a play adapted from a children's book.

"Then an email arrived late Wednesday night notifying Executive Director Julie Butcher Pezzino that the grant has been terminated, casting uncertainty on how the nonprofit organization will pay for the project.

" 'It sort of feels like the rug was pulled out from under us in the middle of an important project,' she said. 'It's pretty brutal. It's a big loss in promised funds for an organization like ours.'

"The children's museum is among the many #museums, #libraries and other organizations across the country that are now scrambling to deal with the loss of funding they depended on to operate.

"President Donald #Trump signed an executive order declaring the Institute of Museum and Library Services [#IMLS], the primary federal support for U.S. libraries and museums, 'unnecessary' and vowing to eliminate or nearly eliminate it. Weeks later, he placed the federal agency's entire staff on a 90-day leave.

"This week, the #MaineStateLibrary laid off 13 staff members — nearly one-third of its staff — and closed for two weeks to restructure its operations because its funding from #IMLS is indefinitely suspended, according to State Librarian #LoriFisher.

"Maine is among more than 20 states suing the federal government over its attempt to shutter IMLS. That suit also challenges Trump's targeting of the Minority Business Development Agency and the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service.

"The IMLS last year awarded $266.7 million in grants, research and policy development to museums, libraries and related organizations.

"The children's museum was awarded the $224,143 Museums for America grant in August, the first time in two decades it had received a grant from the IMLS.

"The museum had already received a $40,000 reimbursement from the grant funding and had requested another $15,000 reimbursement. But that second reimbursement never came and with Trump's comments about eliminating the agency, the museum staff and board were worried about the funding even before it was canceled.

" 'We had some concerns and suspicions, given the news and the termination of all the staff members at IMLS,' Butcher Pezzino said. 'That didn't feel like it would bode well.'"

  14. #PortlandME - '#DisruptBusinessAsUsual': 20 #ProPalestinian protesters arrested after blocking traffic

    Anna Coon, WGME
    Thu, May 22nd 2025 at 4:39 PM

PORTLAND (WGME) – "Portland police arrested 20 people Wednesday during a protest in support of #Palestine.

"The protesters were blocking traffic on Commercial Street before police removed them from the area and opened the road back up to traffic.

" 'Free, free, free Palestine,' people chanted as a handcuffed protester was escorted away by police.

"But arrested protesters say it was their intention to be booked in jail Wednesday, and they say being taken away in handcuffs brings more attention to their cause.

" 'We have written our congressional representatives, we've called them, we've held rallies in the streets, we've done all kinds of things -- everything we can think of,' #MaineVoicesForPalestinianRights Chair #AbbyFuller said. 'And our government has not changed its policy of support for Israel.'

    "Fuller helped organize Wednesday’s protest.

" 'Our intention yesterday was to disrupt business as usual,' Fuller said.

"Fuller and 19 others were arrested by Portland police Wednesday afternoon and brought to the Cumberland County Jail. All were charged with obstructing a public way after police gave multiple warnings that arrests were coming.

" 'If you refuse to move or leave you will be arrested, you may also be exposed to chemical agents,' police told protesters over a loudspeaker during Wednesday's protest.

"Two of the people taken into handcuffs are in their 80s, including #BobSchaible.

" 'I've never been arrested before,' Schaible said. 'I've never been put in the back of a police cruiser.'

"But Schaible and Fuller both say they'd do it all over again and want their arrests to inspire action to get #HumanitarianAid into #Gaza.

"This week, the Associated Press reported that expected aid was halted as Israeli strikes killed 86 people in Gaza. Aid groups warn that without supplies, tens of thousands of people, including children, could starve.

" 'Congress has to take a stand,' Schaible said. 'We want the Portland people, more of them, to know what is happening.'

"Fuller says protesters spent several hours in jail before they were released and says the group works with a pro bono lawyer who will represent them in court, for free."
