  1. Ahead of the King’s Speech, Urban #Transport Group urged government to unlock transport’s potential for growth. It called for stronger roles for Mayoral Strategic Authorities in rail reform so they become central partners with Great British Railways, not just consultees, and for improved local transport foundations including taxi and private hire reform, simpler zebra crossings and greater devolved #infrastructure powers.

The group welcomed reforms since 2024, including bus and rail changes, Great #British #Railways plans, devolution and an integrated transport strategy, but said barriers remain in street design, road safety, pavement parking and delivery processes such as Transport and Works Act Orders.

It also said transport should be central to fiscal devolution, with greater control of funding tools, business rates and land value capture, alongside investment in schemes such as Northern Powerhouse Rail. further reform would improve connectivity and growth.

  2. 🚧🐝 Next phase of a £150m investment into Greater Manchester’s Metrolink begins this month, with major track works to improve safety, reliability and long-term resilience. From 16–29 May, no trams will run between Victoria and Rochdale town centre while track, drainage and ballast are replaced between Monsall and Newton Heath & Moston. About 290 concrete sleepers and 2,000 tonnes of gravel are being used, aiming to improve ride quality and lift current speed restrictions. Replacement buses will operate, and some services will be rerouted, with East Didsbury services starting from Exchange Square. At Derker, steel sheet piling will stabilise ground affected by a 2024 landslip. A further closure from 25–29 May will suspend #trams between St Peter’s Square/Market Street and Piccadilly for equipment upgrades at #Piccadilly Gardens, with alternative travel via walking, interchange or free buses. Passengers are advised to plan ahead using the Bee Network app.

  30. ⚖️ Communications from 2010 revealed the legal and regulatory hurdles surrounding the design and approval of the New Bus for #London (New Routemaster), particularly its open rear platform inspired by the original Routemaster #buses. #European and international safety rules generally required service doors to remain closed while vehicles were moving, raising doubts over whether the design complied with regulations. Department for #Transport officials suggested the rear entrance could be treated as “stowed” rather than functioning as a conventional door, although there were concerns about a possible challenge from the European Commission. To avoid stricter European approval requirements, the project proceeded under the UK’s National Small Series Type Approval scheme, allowing certification for domestic use. The Vehicle Certification Agency said it would defend the interpretation if challenged, while warning there could be no guarantee of success.
