お弁当-Kyōto has a very special owl omikuji that is only available a few days before the Gion Matsuri's July 17th parade.
The Hōka-boko's (放下鉾) 'fukurō-omikuji' was inspired by 'Baghdad' (バグダッド), the float's famous tapestry (donated by Minakawa Taizō 皆川泰蔵 in 1982). -

After spending several days putting it together, members of the Niwatori Hoko float take it out for a test ride - of one block. 昨日も上げた橋弁慶山の内、五条大橋。中央に写っている、手前から2つ目の擬宝珠だけ頭がとんがってないんだけど、ここに牛若丸を乗せられるようになっている。 -

今日の山鉾巡り(その4): 新町通・室町通
昨晩、黒主山の備品がお洒落ってポストがTLに流れてたけど、八幡山では入口に幕を下ろしてたり、役行者山の町内では等間隔に献燈の提灯を並べてたり、後祭は山鉾町は町内全体で何かをしているところが多く、山鉾町の熱量を直に感じやすくて歩いてて楽しい。
なお、黒主山は今日午前の時点で山建てどころか御神体の展示まで終わっていた、早いｗ -

日の入り前くらいからふらふらと散歩。せっかくなので御旅所まで神輿を見てきた。 -
It is said En-no-Gyōja tried to convince Hitokotonushi to build a bridge from Mt Katsuragi to Mt Yoshino (it didn't go well).
On 16th July Shugen-ja devotees from Shōgo-in (聖護院-head temple of Honzan Shugen 本山修験宗) perform a sacred Goma-daki rite (護摩焚き) to dispel evil.

July 16th was 'gyōja mochi' day (行者餅)🙌
The sweet is sold exclusively by Kashiwaya Mitsusada (柏屋光貞) in Gion.

今日の山鉾巡り(その4): 四条傘鉾(1枚目)・綾傘鉾(2, 3枚目)
傘鉾は、現在の神泉苑で始まった祇園御霊会で用いられた鉾がいつしか巡行するようになり、装飾され出した辺りの形態とされている。囃子に合わせて踊りが披露されるのも特徴。
また、古い形態の鉾ではあるものの綾傘鉾は1979年、四条傘鉾は1985年に復興して山鉾巡行に復帰した比較的新しい復興鉾でもある。 -

謡曲「木賊」をテーマにした舁山で、御神体及び懸装品は会所内で展示されている。 -
今朝の山鉾巡り(その5): 岩戸山、蟷螂山
岩戸山(1, 2枚目)は天の岩戸の逸話をモチーフとした山で、舁山から綱で引く曳山へ発展した山。御神体の一つ伊弉諾尊が屋根の上に備えられる珍しい山でもある。天照大御神が引きこもる場所なので内装も豪華ｗ
3枚目はみんな大好き蟷螂山。蟷螂の斧という故事に基づいた山らしい。ちなみに日中はからくりを動かしてくれない。 -

山の場合、占出山のように宵山期間は会所内で懸装品を展示しているケース(1枚目)も少なくない。御神体はほぼどこも宵山期間は会所展示。その中でも会所内に入らないと見られない山も、山伏山のように外から見られる(2枚目)ようになっている山もあってまちまち。 -
今朝の山鉾巡り: 船鉾
先祭の締めを務める船形の鉾。神功皇后の逸話をモチーフとした鉾で、祇園祭前編の神事的意義を視覚的に象徴する鉾でもある。 -

🔥THE FATE OF THE FLOATS😱
In the early 15thC it is recorded that 66 local neighbourhoods called 'machigumi' (町組) stored and cared for the floats.
The number 66 symbolically represented the 66 provinces of Japan when the Gion Matsuri first began...1 float for each province.

Izanagi (伊弉諾尊), the 'Father of Japan', sits atop the roof, while the gods Amaterasu and Ame-no-Tajikarao (手力男命 - the god that forced open the door of the heavenly cave) sit within.
Although called a yama, from about 1570 the float grew into the shape of the larger hoko.

Empress Jingū is joined by 3 gods, all who helped her cross the sea safely: Ryūjin (龍神 - dragon god of the sea), Kashima Daimyōjin (鹿島大明神 - a god of war and safe maritime travel) and Sumiyoshi Daimyōjin (住吉大明神 - deity of seafaring travel).

28) AYAGASA-BOKO (綾傘鉾)☂️
The Ayagasa-boko consists of two large parasols. It is thought they reflect the earliest type of float seen in the festival, first used to entertain the gods. Absent for a long time, in 1979 the float was restored.

Known also as 'Seoritsu-hime' (瀬織津姫命), the goddess is depicted wearing a mask and golden eboshi (烏帽子 - a lacquered hat).
She carries a halberd (長刀) to dispel evil.
At the end of the parade the highly-desired votive tablets (said to prevent theft) are sold to the public. -

Float treasures include a doll (now retired) sculpted by Kōun (康運) in 1537, and textiles made from a haori jacket (羽織) worn by Toyotomi Hideyoshi (豊臣秀吉).
The original doll's clothes (1589) are preserved and are the oldest in the entire festival. -
19) ASHIKARI-YAMA (芦刈山)🌾
Ashikari-yama is based on Zeami's (世阿弥元清 1363-1443) Noh play 'The Reed Cutter' (芦刈).
The work concerns a Naniwa reed-cutter, reunited briefly with the wife poverty forced him to abandon. She is now remarried and wealthy. -

Each float has a special symbol that features prominently on lanterns, clothing and goods. Animals also make for a popular motif.
🐟Urade-yama's (占出山) yukata, designed 50 years ago, features sweetfish.

The Gion Matsuri's float musicians, 'hikiko' (曳き子 - float pullers), 'ondotori' (音頭取り - cheerleaders), and even those selling float goods, dress in clothing unique to the 34 'yamaboko'.
NHK Kyōto exhibited some of the festival's beautiful yukata. -

Nao-san shows how to 'throw away' last year's chimaki (茅巻き/ちまき).
Prior to the two parades each float accepts old chimaki. These will be purified and ritually burnt at Yasaka-jinja (八坂神社).

In the past a special guild was responsible for not only assembling and disassembling the floats at festival time, but preserving information about the knots and methods of construction unique to each 'hoko' and 'yama'.

🪢IF YOU BUILD IT, THEY WILL COME🪵
Between July 10 and 14th the floats that will participate in the Gion Matsuri's first parade (the 'Saki Matsuri' 先祭り - July 17th) are constructed.
The parts are laid out, slotted together, and then meticulously bound in rope. -
As the float's top ornament looks like a sandbar it's nicknamed 'Suhama-hoko' (洲浜鉾), the 'Sandbar Float'.
At the tip of the hoko is a sun, moon and stars, symbolically lighting the world below.
In 1929 a doll, 'Sankō-maru' (三光丸 'Boy of the 3 Lights'), replaced a real chigo.

14) TAISHI-YAMA (太子山)🪷
Taishi-yama is dedicated to Prince Shōtoku (聖徳太子 572-622, aka Shōtoku Taishi), the great propagator of Buddhism.
This float alone uses a cedar (not the usual pine) as a conduit for the gods. -
The float is also nicknamed 'Ushi Tenjin-yama' (牛天神山) as the enshrined statue (carved in 1630) would traditionally be transferred to the yama on the 'day of the ox' (勧請の日が丑の日). These animals were deeply connected to the cult of Tenjin (Sugawara-no-Michizane).

Two types of floats, collectively known as 'yamaboko' (山鉾), take part in the Gion Matsuri's (祇園祭) Yamaboko Junkō (山鉾巡行).
The larger are called 'hoko' (鉾) and can hold musicians in their upper floor.
The (generally) smaller floats are known as 'yama' (山). -
🥁THE FLOATS OF THE GION MATSURI🙌
July, consumed as it is with the Gion Matsuri, always passes in the blink of an eye, so I thought I'd compile a list of the 34 individual floats ('yamaboko' 山鉾) that you'll be able to see at this month's festival.

Back to biscuits...
At the first 'goryō-e', held in the grounds of the imperial gardens, one of the many offerings was a type of Chinese-style cracker.
It is said that Kibi-no-Asomi Makibi (吉備真備 695-775), an envoy to Tang, was the first to introduce these crackers to Japan. -
The Gion Festival's Kikusui-boko (菊水鉾) is named after a local spring called 'Kikusui-i' (菊水井 'Chrysanthemum Water Well') & the Chinese story of the 'Chrysanthemum Boy'.
An exiled favourite of the emperor, Kikujidō lived for 700 years by drinking chrysanthemum dew.A student of the famed tea master Sen-no-Rikyū (千利休 1522-91) built a small teahouse close to the old well and christened it 'Kikusui-i' (菊水井).
The float later took this name. -
There is no clear indication that Yasaka-jinja's crest is related to the humble cucumber, but astonishingly everyone involved in the Gion Matsuri continues to uphold the no cucumber rule in July🥒😵
For spectators, chilled cucumbers on sticks have become a popular festival food.
