  1. ICYMI: Raining on the Parade・水を差す: Wrapped in plastic, the Yamaboko floats of the Gion Matsuri ride down Shijo and Kawaramachi streets, pulled by teams of rain soaked volunteers, and viewed by thousands of umbrella wielding spectators.

  2. ICYMI: Test Run・鶏鉾: The annual Gion Matsuri Festival is upon us, and for the next few weeks many Kyoto residents and visitors will enjoy the spectacle of the 34 yamaboko floats before the official parades on July 17 & 24.

After spending several days putting it together, members of the Niwatori Hoko float take it out for a test ride - of one block. This float has been a participant in the festival for more than 450 years.… hermosawavephotography.com/250 #祇園祭 #山鉾 #京都 #祭り #文化

  3. While it is likely that the Muromachi period saw the largest number of floats paraded, there has never been a set number.

Fire constantly devastated the city and the floats were regularly turned to ash. As merchant wealth blossomed and faded, so too did the number of floats.

  5. 🪢IF YOU BUILD IT, THEY WILL COME🪵

Between July 10 and 14th the floats that will participate in the Gion Matsuri's first parade (the 'Saki Matsuri' 先祭り - July 17th) are constructed.
The parts are laid out, slotted together, and then meticulously bound in rope.

  6. Two types of floats, collectively known as 'yamaboko' (山鉾), take part in the Gion Matsuri's (祇園祭) Yamaboko Junkō (山鉾巡行).

The larger are called 'hoko' (鉾) and can hold musicians in their upper floor.
The (generally) smaller floats are known as 'yama' (山).

  7. 🥁THE FLOATS OF THE GION MATSURI🙌

July, consumed as it is with the Gion Matsuri, always passes in the blink of an eye, so I thought I'd compile a list of the 34 individual floats ('yamaboko' 山鉾) that you'll be able to see at this month's festival.

  8. The highlight of the festival for many are the 'yamaboko' floats (山鉾) and their elaborate decorations.

The 34 floats incorporate a huge variety of decorative elements: ceiling paintings, roof carvings, metalwork, dolls, and precious textiles from as far away as Persia and Belgium.
