@astronomerritt This reminds me a lot of Tim Urban's "Instant Gratification Monkey" - not sure if that sounds familiar:

(There are follow-up posts and a TED talk linked in the post if that one grabs you)

A self-proclaimed philosopher, armed with #bourbon and Wait But Why, claims he's cracked the code of #regrets 🎉. Behold, the revolutionary idea that people wish they'd spent more time with family on their deathbeds 😲. Truly groundbreaking work, worthy of the next Nobel Prize in Captain Obvious Studies 🏆.

TIL from #WaitButWhy "Earthlings are very lucky, eclipse-wise. Most planets don’t have a big enough moon to create a total solar eclipse. Not only is our moon big enough, it’s about exactly the size of the sun in our night sky because, by sheer coincidence, the #sun is about 400 times farther from us than the #moon and also about 400 times bigger than the moon in diameter—making our #eclipses especially breathtaking." https://waitbutwhy.com/2024/04/eclipse.html

I just posted my review of Tim Urban's book "What's Our Problem?" on GoodReads: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/5371661284
tl;dr: Not what I expected, but an important book nevertheless.

@cliffwade Good morning! #coffee has been consumed so the day is ready to begin.
I picked up #WaitButWhy’s new book #WhatsOurProblem so that’s been keeping me company this morning.
My day will consist of work emails, voting in the #Chicago election, and getting my marriage license 😊 -
Important Note (Tim Urban from #WaitButWhy is not on Mastodon, or...?)

Everything we call civilization was invented in the last 500 generations—way too short a time for our bodies and brains to re-optimize. We're a bunch of primates in a totally unnatural environment, trying our best. Good thing to keep in mind!

I know it’s old, but I was just revisiting this old #WaitButWhy article on his prep for giving a presentation to give a TED talk. I was struck by this section in particular, which I love:
Spoiler: his talk ends up being on “Procrastination”.
I just kind of love the view of himself as multiple people in different timelines, which gets hilarious in subsequent images.

The website and blog #WaitButWhy is built for obsessives. What kind of person makes a site like that?
Today’s Tedium finds out. Check out our interview with Tim Urban over this way: https://tedium.co/2022/12/16/wait-but-why-tim-urban-interview/

CW: #selfnote #verbose #privacy you got warned
when i start brain hemorrhage like this, i never know where i will end.
this time, i didn't know even where to begin!
i started #ahoxus in 2019, in a sense, as a continued work on my feelings towards #freedom.
back in 2004 i got shocked by the existence of #wikipedia, and could never stop looking at open source software ever since.
but much before that, i always remember as a kid (born 1981 here) of how much i loved those books that showed how everything works, from castles, to big cruise ships, and the human body, by simply showing drawings with everything opened up and detailed explanations of all small pieces.
very much like tim do on #waitbutwhy.
i talk a lot about computers, and often forget the other aspects of freedom, because i use computers since very little. perhaps 5 years old.
nowadays, i kind of throw all these feelings together when i bring up #agpl and #fupl. and even my concerns with #transparency or #harmonicchaos.
in the end, just my completely unpaid work (~trying~) to make the world better for me first, and then for everyone who might want to tag along.
but #whocares? certainly paul mccartney never could care enough to get in touch! 🤣

Hey #fosstodon what blogs are you reading via #rss (this is a requirement, I want to be intentional)? I see great blog posts from some of you here but I don't see everyone's stuff. Please plug your own and others' blogs. Input from #askfedi and #boostswelcome.
I'm interested in #technology (#foss, #emacs, #web, #rust) #photography (#landscape, #fossphotography), #sciencecommunication (#kurzgesagt #stevemould, #minutephysics), #thoughtleaders (#cgpgrey, #waitbutwhy). Thanks for the help!
