  19. La seconda missione di Varda Space si è conclusa in Australia

    Varda Space Industries ha annunciato lo scorso 28 febbraio di aver recuperato la propria capsula W-2 nell’Australia Meridionale, dopo il rientro dalla sua missione orbitale.

    La startup californiana, specializzata nella costruzione di veicoli in grado di ospitare sistemi di produzione nello spazio, ha allestito la capsula W-2 a sostegno delle ricerche sulle condizioni di rientro ad alte velocità. L’obiettivo, infatti, è quello di raccogliere dati critici per la ricerca militare ipersonica e per il test di nuovi sistemi di protezione termica della NASA.

    Dopo aver trascorso sei settimane nello spazio, la capsula è atterrata appesa al suo paracadute, nel Koonibba Test Range situato nell’Australia Meridionale e gestito dalla startup Southern Launch. Si è trattato di un evento fondamentale per entrambe le realtà spaziali e per la crescita del settore spaziale commerciale della regione.

    La capsula ha portato nello spazio un carico costituito da un sensore realizzato dall’Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), denominato OSPREE (Optical Sensing of Plasmas in the Reentry Environment). Questo avanzato strumento è stato progettato per registrare le misurazioni spettrali dell’ambiente dinamico del plasma durante la fase di rientro.

    Secondo quanto affermato dai dirigenti di Varda, questa missione ha raggiunto dei risultati senza precedenti: misurazioni ottiche in situ dell’ambiente del rientro dall’orbita a velocità superiori a Mach 15, fornendo dati in tempo reale che offrono uno spaccato di come i materiali e i sistemi si comportano nelle estreme condizioni ipersoniche. Questa è stata la prima missione di Varda, nell’ambito di un accordo pluriennale stipulato con l’AFRL.

    La capsula, del peso di 120 kg, ha utilizzato un bus (piattaforma satellitare) Pioneer fornito da Rocket Lab e aveva integrato uno scudo termico sviluppato in collaborazione con l’Ames Research Centre della NASA.

    La missione della capsula W-2 è iniziata il 14 gennaio 2025, quando è stata lanciata con la missione Transporter-12 del razzo Falcon 9 di SpaceX dalla Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. L’atterraggio sul suolo australiano ha rappresentato il primo rientro di un veicolo spaziale commerciale sul suolo del continente oceanico. Il Koonibba Test Range ha un’estensione di 40.100 km².

    Dopo il recupero, i tecnici della startup californiana e di quelli della Southern Launch hanno iniziato una serie di operazioni post-atterraggio sulla capsula, in preparazione al suo ritorno al quartier generale di Varda a Los Angeles per le analisi più approfondite.

    I dati raccolti nel corso di questa missione dovrebbero essere utili per migliorare i sistemi di protezione termica, la progettazione dei sensori e l’aerodinamica dei veicoli ipersonici del futuro.

    Anche la capsula W-2, come aveva fatto la precedente W-1 che ha volato dal 12 giugno 2023 al 21 febbraio 2024, ha portato in orbita il reattore farmaceutico di Varda Space che permette la produzione di medicine salvavita nello spazio.

    Anche le prossime due missioni di Varda Space verranno gestite da Southern Launch; W-3 che dovrebbe partire partire in questo mese di marzo e W-4 entro fine 2025.
