It's only shortly past 8 in the morning, but I need to #vent.
I just overheard a new #tenure track assistant #professor talk about how they got there.
In a nutshell, they haven't left the department since their master studies and stumbled into the tenure process by accident.I am (kinda) happy for them, but I am also so incredibly fucking jealous!
I have switched not only university but country after every degree/job, so by now I live in country number 5 since starting by studies.
The longest I've been in the same country was during my #PhD plus pandemic and unemployment for over a year.Especially older #academics don't seem to understand this, because whenever I mention any of this I encounter completely blank stares. Note, I'm in a department where most senior staff is local and celebrating 15-35+ years at the same employer.
I'm in my mid-30, I don't want to move every few years when my temporary contract ends.
I want to be able to plan more than 1-2 years at a time.I absolutely love doing #research, but I hate so many aspects of #academic culture or what has been normalized over the years for #AcademicLife.
I plan on staying in #academia despite of it.#Rant over, time to calm down and sip my tea.

On the one hand, I know that #academic institutions have changed and evolved.
OTO(ther)H, I just found 3(!) new organizations that came online relatively recently to deal with "misalignment between traditional academic metrics for hiring, #tenure, and advancement" which has been a problem since the 1980's.
(And we still can't deal with anything actually #interdisciplinary!)

I was informed I made it. I'm to be awarded #tenure and promotion, effective August 1st. There are crappy things happening, though, like hiring freezes and such. I almost expect to hear they won't be able to give me the raise that comes with my promotion. I'm relieved I'll have tenure, but would still consider other job opportunities if something interesting came along. I applied to a San Diego position last year, but the search was canceled and the position was swept. #academia

US #universities are nearly all in the red, financially.
1. Yes, funding #publicEducation costs money
2. Research shows increasing #tuition costs are overwhelmingly because of (a) state reductions in per-student financing and (b) #AdministrativeBloat
Naturally, every upper administrator (and #university system) thinks the obvious fix is to cut #faculty, destroy #tenure, increase class sizes, remove majors, hire #adjuncts, and otherwise degrade academics--you know, the thing universities are about.
MY RADICAL SUGGESTIONS:
1. Fucking fund universities, you cowards
2. If you need to cut costs, start with the things that don't contribute to academics, like (a) administrative costs, (b) sports programs, (c) police and other non-academic programs using resources
3. Stop letting people in suits who know nothing about education and/or about business (and definitely about the ways universities and businesses are and are not similar) make the decisions
