Captains Thorpe and Crawford at Lyttelton Port. "Terra Nova" in background, 1900-1950
Capt. Thorpe is on the left, Capt. Crawford on the right. Photo taken shortly after Crawford's appointment as a pilot. Thorpe, from Ireland, was harbourmaster at the time; Crawford, a master in Union Co. passenger vessels between NZ / Australia, the most recent (at that time) being the TSS “Atua”, was born in Sumner, educated in Christchurch and Lyttelton and went to sea as an Apprentice in the NZ Shipping Company's barque “Waimate”. The vessel in the background at No.1 Breastwork is the Antarctic supply vessel “Terra Nova".
