  1. My AI chatbot says 60% of Australians oppose recognising Aboriginal people in the constitution, despite benefiting from their land. This glaring, systemic injustice remains entrenched.

  2. #Introduction

G’day, I created this hosted instance to keep my mind occupied.

UPDATED #’s reduced to 100 users

500 characters only for #toots, only 4 options for polls - but there’s room here for 100 users.

I voted YES on the #VoiceReferendum

  3. “Advance” scammers and manipulators.

“The entire premise of the “No” campaign against the Indigenous Voice to parliament was a sham.

“Not only was its murky network of half-a-dozen entities “run” from a fake national headquarters — by directors stating fake residential addresses — it was also a fake “grassroots campaign” of fake “ordinary Australians”.”

  4. The Voice: Did The Media Do Its Job?

    - some reflections in the second half on media coverage on the campaign, headlines, fact-checking (or lack thereof)

  5. As depressing as the result was, plotting out polling place yes ratios shows a definite clustering. I've used the ABC colour scale, and made point size representative of number of votes. #voicereferendum #auspol #mapping [redo with Canberra labelled properly]

  6. @AnarchoDoggo Same argument was widely used by colonisers in defeating the recent Australian #VoiceReferendum on whether the government ought to listen a tiny bit more to #Indigenous peoples: "They ought to be grateful for all the blessings of 'civilisation'/colonisation!"

  7. Anyone in these lands now called Australia who is shocked at the outcome of the #Indigenous #VoiceToParliament referendum, saying "this isn't the Australia I thought I knew", might well have been in favour of listening to the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, but clearly wasn't actually already listening to those voices speaking about their experiences.

That a large proportion of Australian voters were all too readily mobilised by racist dogwhistles & disinformation came as a surprise to precisely zero Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people I know.

To illustrate this: did you know, in the most recent three year period for which there is (self-reported) data, 45% of all 'use of force' incidents by #NSWpolice were directed towards a First Nations person? If you're part of the 3.4% of NSW who are Indigenous I doubt this is particularly news for you. If you're not, were you aware of this? And remember that the (chronically/strategically underfunded) police watchdog LECC admits that even this data is incomplete, meaning the true figure may well be higher.

A suggestion for non-Indigenous #Auspol folk who voted Yes in the failed #VoiceReferendum - even if the government might not be constitutionally required to listen, maybe consider how you can.

  8. CW: More referendum content

On what will be my last post on the subject of the #VoiceReferendum, the ABC has put out a great little statistics analysis of the vote.

Of note is the strong correlations with indicators of socioeconomic group, and that the results are almost identical to the 1999 Republic referendum.

I think this may be ultimately a failure of our education system. We aren’t taught civics at school, people broadly won’t have the tools to understand what these questions mean or why they are important. All they’d be seeing is a government asking them to answer things that don’t have to do with them and don’t solve or help with their problems. Maybe we should be looking at how to give those tools to people if we want them to properly make choices of national significance.

Otherwise this will just happen again.

  9. To all indigenous/First Nations Australians: I personally make a commitment to listen to you, your voice, and the voices of those who represent you, to understand and together find a better way forward.

  10. Some racist arsehole tore down one of our #yes23 corflutes.

So now when they go past they’ll see a “YES” T-shirt swinging in the same spot and “YES” written using fluorescent orange tape along our property boundary on several trees and poles.

  12. “As a Liberal MP, I am voting yes to the voice because we have two Australias now and I want a united one” On every front, Aboriginal Australians are not enjoying the same opportunities and outcomes as other Australians. #Thevoice will help close that big gap. #bravo #voteyes #voicereferendum amp-theguardian-com.cdn.amppro

  13. @David_M_Green absolutely!

For me the marriage equality vote is a touchstone, I’m not a fan of that patriarchal system, and I’m polyamorous, so my relationships wouldn’t have been recognised anyway.

I voted yes and I’m so pleased now that married queer friends are telling me how much easier housing and medical issues are for them. It’s also obvious that a change in acceptance of diversity has happened.

Take one step - vote yes!

  14. I find it interesting that those saying No to the Voice, because it will create division, seem to be completely unaware that the Constitution already makes distinctions between Indigenous and Torres Strait Islanders and the rest of the population. There's already an "Us and Them' in the Constitution...
