  1. I voted before lunch today at the local primary school.

I had forgotten the Federal election allows people to hand out how-to-vote pamphlets up to the entrance (for those overseas, these are party material that tells uninformed voters where to put their preferences - we have preferential voting in Australia and not ‘first past the post’). Local ACT elections have a 50 metre exclusion zone so you never have to deal with these people.

Once I got in the gate, there was a queue that took about 15 minutes to navigate. Four candidates on the ballot for the House and about 16 for the senate. It was easy - the independents got my first preference and the parties got the last preference (well almost, the anti-vaxers on the senate ballot got my absolute last preference).

I then enjoyed my #DemocracySausage (the local primary school would have made a lot of money today) and was on my way.

  2. Now this, Australia, is the Democracy Sausage as God intended. None of your stingy piece of bread Eastern States crap 😝 :democracysausage:

  3. Eerily similar.

The last time a major party leader spoke on the television from a stadium he lied.

Vote for a minor party or independent first, use the power of preference voting.

    You can’t waste your vote.

  4. I am thankful Australia has compulsory voting, because it guarantees everyone the right to vote.

    And sausage! :democracysausage:

  5. After an interminably long (and mostly uninspiring) Australian Federal Election campaign, tomorrow (Saturday) is the big day.

While about half the electorate has already voted (early voting started right after Easter), the rest of us vote tomorrow.

What I am looking forward to is … a #DemocracySausage

  6. Important info from the Aussie embassy in Germany re #AusVotes. In person voting happening in both Frankfurt and Berlin, #DemocracySausage in Berlin only.

  7. Turns out the community hall where my #karate club trains is a polling station.

Not one flyer-hander-outer offered me a flyer... I must have looked too scary in my karate gi 🥋

  8. My fellow Western Australians - here's the most important thing you need to know about voting on Saturday: the Democracy Sausage list!

Oh, and stay away from those Group M Independents. They're all cookers, crypto bros and suspected transphobes.

  9. CW: Photo and discussion of food, animal products, selfie, eye contact, democracy, Glorious Sydney, and related matters

Beef sausage with fried egg and BBQ sauce. A+ the egg still being a little runny but not too runny. Absolutely ripping sunshine for it. This is one democracy sausage festival you really wouldn’t want to have missed your nomination for. #democracysausage #GloriousSydney #GoSwans #colesdemocracyradio #SydneyWeatherTooting

  10. The 2024 New South Wales council elections are happening today. Don't forget to vote, and get a Democracy Sausage at the exit!

Notably, this election will be affected by an administrative bungle by the RWNJ Liberal Party of NSW. 140 candidates for 16 councils failed to get their paperwork submitted in time so aren't on the ballot.

Also notable, the ballot this year has approximately 120 conspiracy-theory nutjobs, anti-lockdown nutjobs, COVID-denial nutjobs. It's an extraordinarily high number of "fringe" candidates.

Vote-counting will begin at 7:00 tonight, with results for most seats to be announced tonight. Postal votes and seats that are so close they'll require a recount could take a fortnight or more.

  11. Until recently when #Halloween began to take off here in #Australia, there were very few non-religious festivals where neighbours would come together, share food and have a shared experience. Being a #CompulsoryVoting nation, our elections have become this sort of tradition. While recently I have been an early-voter, this year for the Victorian election, I have enjoyed the experience of voting on the day, getting a #DemocracySausage, supporting the local school's bake sale, and generally "celebrating" democracy with my neighbours. #VicVotes
