  1. Maybe each new generation of Australians is a little less willing to buy what certain media empires are selling.
Turns out Guardian Australia, the BBC, the New York Times and even the AFL’s site are pulling bigger online audiences than any News Corp paper here. Even The Australian is being comfortably outpaced.
For an outfit that once claimed to shape the national conversation, that’s quite the comedown.

  2. CW: propaganda, by Murdoch, antitrans

    @estellekr

And this is in Rupert Murdoch's The Australian newspaper
As such it is another step in Murdoch's years long drive to inflame fears and create dissension in western democracies.
I'm told there is/was a section in the online edition of The Australian used to twist readers' mind with articles like this.

  3. “Drill, baby, drill” they say. But who exactly is doing the drilling? It’s not “us” — it’s foreign multinationals.
Follow the money and it runs from News Corp (American owned, minimal tax here) straight to the gas lobby, Australian Energy Producers, representing giants like ExxonMobil, Shell, INPEX and Chevron.
So when Angus Taylor and Pauline Hanson call for more drilling… whose interests are they really backing?

  4. News Corp is an input company for AI
Translation: Rupert's propaganda machine is happy to sell its slop to Meta for $50m a year so Zuck can train even dumber chatbots. The same News Corp that calls platforms 'true monsters' when they're not paying up. Rules for thee but not for me, eh?

  5. @jhaue It’s infuriating to see the obstruction playbook laid out so plainly. While people lose their homes to fires and floods, the Murdoch press and the business council work tirelessly to block any real change.
Let’s be honest: Murdoch almost certainly has a massive hidden financial stake in keeping fossil fuels alive. We may never know the full extent, but he’s not doing this for the economy - he’s protecting his own fortune.
They are arsonists posing as firefighters, and they belong in the dock for crimes against the future, not on the opinion pages.

It doesn’t take many votes to get a seat in the Senate and One Nation knows it. A primary vote of just 4–6% is often enough when preferences from other right-wing micro parties flow their way.
Add to that a media ecosystem—hello Sky After Dark—that gives them relentless coverage (even when it’s negative), and you’ve got a recipe for survival.

  9. @InsurgoFormica “Worst government ever”? You mean the only government in living memory with the guts to give us universal healthcare, free university education, Indigenous land rights, no-fault divorce, and an independent foreign policy?
What’s really being celebrated here is 50 years since a media baron and a complicit Governor-General colluded to sack a democratically elected government.
Murdoch’s campaign against Whitlam wasn’t about bad governance — it was about protecting power, privilege, and profit.

  10. The Murdochs feud like petty royals, but their empire keeps poisoning democracy. Whether it’s Fox News radicalizing the US, Sky News fearmongering in the UK, or the Australian grinding axes here, their media machine exists to distort, divide, and entrench power.
And yet, as they bicker, the damage is done:

  11. News Corp owns much of the Liberals' spectacular defeat. The Liberal Party needs to wake up: News Corp is a foreign-owned media empire pushing division, resentment and fear — not good policy. 12. Rupert Murdoch's latest legal move reveals the true nature of his media empire. In a desperate bid to secure his legacy, Murdoch is fighting to ensure his son Lachlan remains the sole heir to his empire, despite opposition from his other children. This high-stakes family drama, dubbed 'Project Harmony,' could reshape the future of $NewsCorp and Fox. 13. @feather1952 @jhaue
Rupert Murdoch and News Corp have frequently faced criticism for their climate change stance and support for the fossil fuel industry. Critics argue that Murdoch's Australian media outlets, such as The Australian and Sky News Australia, often promote views favourable to fossil fuel interests, aligning with Murdoch's personal and business investments in the energy sector.

News Corp's editorial stance typically reflects scepticism towards climate change science and endorses policies favouring the fossil fuel industry, which can influence public opinion and electoral outcomes. Murdoch's sway over political figures and parties further impacts policy decisions that align with his business interests.

While direct causation is difficult to prove, the alignment of News Corp's editorial policies with Murdoch's financial interests in fossil fuels suggests that his media empire might be used to support and protect these investments. This strategic move could ensure a favourable environment for fossil fuels in Australia.

    Fine article.

    it even quotes Laura,
"t’s a little mystifying how a company that has had to pay out an estimated $2bn – so far – in legal settlements for illegally hacking peoples phones, and other invasions of privacy, has set itself up as an arbiter of journalistic standards."

    We need a #MurdochRoyalCommission.

  21. @Rory29 @kentparkstreet1 It's important to be aware of the complex web of interests that shape the information we receive. Did you know that many of the same corporations and wealthy individuals who own major mainstream media outlets also hold significant shares in mining and fossil fuel companies? This overlap can create conflicts of interest, potentially influencing how news on environmental issues is reported. Stephen Maine’s question about Tony Abbott was ignored

“Why was Tony Abbott appointed to the Fox Corp board rather than the News Corp board given that Fox has no operating assets in Australia, the market he knows best?”

    Rupert is decrepit
“As Joe Biden turned 81 on November 20, it is understandable that Rupert has bailed out. It would hardly be credible for Fox News to keep hammering the US president over his age if their own executive chairman was 93 going into next November’s election.”

  29. THIS is why so many of us have tried to warn people of the dangers of misinformation in our "news" media and social media.

THIS is why individuals of ANY political persuasion like #Murdoch and #Musk shouldn't be allowed to have such overwhelming control of the narrative, because people believe their propaganda bullshit and some act upon it.

THIS is why we MUST demand that our media be honest to a fault or face severe financial and legal repercussions.

We have done this before....Hitler and Goebels were hideous masters of hateful and divisive propaganda. Are we really so wilfully ignorant and desperate to have someone "lesser" to look down on that we are prepared to ignore the horrendous lessons of the past?

Please keep talking FACTS to those you know who believe the bile being spewed by these hate riddled people and organisations. Keep your faith in humanity and most of all, keep remembering that you are NOT in the minority like they say, but that you are in the majority of people who genuinely want to be part of an empathetic, accepting, science and education embracing, respectful, inclusive and loving community!

RIP to the 3 innocent lives stolen by these lunatics. My sincere and heartfelt condolences to their Family, Friends and Colleagues 💔❤💔
