  1. The phenomenon of “epistemic closure” was prominent in the recent referendum “debate”. The 'No' camp was increasingly confined in a bubble of their own making. Anything that conflicted with their beliefs was viewed as part of a conspiracy. Fact-checkers were attacked, if what they revealed did not match beliefs (which was often the case).

“The broader forces — the ones already leaving people “worryingly untethered from reality” more than a decade ago — have proved quite resistant to nudges.”

  2. You know the way you think about people who voted No to #TheVoice #Referendum2023? You perhaps think that through their choices when exercising their freedoms, they are contributing to the ongoing marginalisation and suffering of a minority group, who already have things hard as it is.

    Right?

That's exactly how the #Immunocompromised #Immunosuppressed community thinks about you when you exercise your freedoms to participate in group activities without a #Mask.

  3. As a Australian from a migrant background it is hard to truly understand the hardships and blessings that First Nations people experience. I can empathise, but I can never truly sympathise (share the feeling). My identity is not connected to the land I come from.

A ‘First Nation’ person’s identity is inseparable from the land they come from. It’s not merely Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It’s people of many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nations.
The ‘Stolen Generation’ was literally an attempt of kidnapping and dispossessing Indigenous people from the lands they held deep-rooted connections with.
To this modern day, we (the Australian public representated by corporation and government) continue to attempt to demolish places of cultural importance or relocate populations, as if ‘that’s the solution’. The ‘Stolen Generation’ never ended - it simply stopped being official, and stopped targeting people directly.

And we wonder why there’s a massive difference in the referendum between the heavily ‘Yes’ voting Indigenous communities and the rest of the country?
I guess you take your identity for granted. Never had to forcibly renounce your identity and who you are. Never had to fight for your community, because you can just move on. Never felt the need for a constitutionally protected ‘voice’ to make sure your community is heard, because your individualism says ‘It’s not my business’ ‘It doesn’t affect me’.

Of course you take it for granted. First Nation people disproportionally have laws and policies enacted against them, unlike all other ethnic groups in Australia. The closest thing that Australians from migrant backgrounds have experienced is ‘Operation Fortitude’ in Melbourne, 2015. (There were many others policies that never got to implementation, thanks to the thankless work of civil rights and migrant/refugee right groups.)

Who will be the next minority group that is targeted, and claimed to be ‘causing division’ when the division was already there and the majority group simply don’t want to ‘close the gap’.
With the results of this referendum, the nationalists movement in Australia, and Foreign states, have confirmed that many Australian minority groups are willing to turn a blind eye on rights issues of other minority groups. So, don’t be surprised if you’re next.

  4. "Last week, [the AEC] was tagged in a photo of an absurd No campaign brochure which suggested the Voice would lead to financial restitution: "Genuine question @AusElectoralCom, are campaigns just allowed to lie on their material? Reparations?? Seriously!?"

But Ekin-Smyth's team could not really respond: "Our job is the process not the topic."

    So, whose job is it?"

    On Brexit:
"The parliament asked a salient question: Which security agency is in charge of protecting the very institutions of democracy upon which the Westminster system relies? After a protracted inquiry, the answer it produced was: "No one.""

This article has some interesting data visualisations that show how people voted in the Referendum. These factors stand-out strongly:
    - City vs rural
    - Educational level
    - Age
    - Income

Curiously, the societal divisions on these maps are that same as last time there was a referendum, nearly a generation ago.

If you are interested in getting the Reconciliation WA emails and finding out about what's going on throughout the year then please have a look at them here recwa.org.au/
I'm sure they'd be very pleased to have the support (it's free and they don't send a huge amount of emails) at this particularly difficult time.

I had an email from Reconciliation WA ths morning. I'll quote it here.

    "Australia's reconciliation journey continues

Yesterday’s referendum result is a profound disappointment to us all.

Despite this setback the work of reconciliation will continue. It is needed now more than ever.

Reconciliation WA Co-Chair Carol Innes said that Australia must now come together to turn what has often been a disappointing narrative into a shared commitment for reconciliation.

“Western Australians must ask now ourselves whether this is the standard we are prepared to accept in our society. We can do better.” Carol said.

“Whilst we are saddened by this result, this is not the first time our people have experienced setbacks to their aspirations.”

“We pay respect to the courage and example of our Elders and leaders who have walked this journey for many years.”

Reconciliation WA is buoyed by the enormous contributions of our supporters who worked the length and breadth of Western Australia during this campaign and who, as part of a movement, have worked to change the country for the better in the past 30 years.

We are encouraged by the public support of a broad range of people including Australia’s young people and those from culturally and linguistically diverse communities.

Yesterday, as a nation we stumbled on our reconciliation journey. We must acknowledge and sit with this.

However, we are confident that after the dust settles, the hundreds of thousands of Western Australians who voted Yes, and those who voted No - but who are committed to better outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people - will unite for a more just Australia.

As part of a network spanning the country, we recognise and celebrate everyone in Western Australia who showed up for recognition, for respect, and for voice, and applaud the generosity and effort of everyone involved.

Now is a time for healing.

We are determined to continue the journey of reconciliation in Western Australia and urge you to continue as well. "

"To the Australians who supported us in this vote – we thank you sincerely. You comprise many millions of Australians of love and goodwill. We know you wanted a better future for Australia, and to put the colonial past behind us by choosing belated recognition and justice."

Here’s the top 68% of locations that voted YES in #TheVoice #Referendum2023

  12. CW: #auspol, The Voice

My take on The Voice, given the very clear split between urban Yes votes and regional and rural No votes, is that it echoes Brexit in so many ways.

We're scared to share power when we have resource scarcity: water, jobs, housing, power, fuel.

Scarcity mindsets narrow our focus; we think zero-sum game instead of imagining possibilities. How do we shift mindsets, not just viewpoints?

  13. Three things I will say at 8am on the morning after a very disappointing #referendum2023 result:

    * there should be no place for political schadenfreude this morning
    * the result does not make 60% of Australians racist people
    * the status quo for Indigenous Australians can not continue.

  14. CW: My take on the Voice Referendum result

What a disgraceful result and sadly reflects the ignorance, denial, deep seated #racism and #prejudice our country continues to suffer from. I’m sorry the majority of Australia couldn’t find it in their hearts to walk together with our First Nations people with this generous & modest #voice proposal. Shame on you Australia. The truth telling of this #referendum is plain to see. What an embarrassing moment in our history. 😥#VoicetoParliament #referendum2023 #ulurustatementfromtheheart #thevoice #auspol #yes23 #racism #ignorance #VoiceTreatyTruth #reconciliation #voteyes

  15. I can't even get my neighbours not to run down ducklings trying to cross the road, as it would slow them down by 2 minutes.

So why am I surprised Australians voted against an ADVISORY body for INDIGENOUS people that would not affect them?

    It wasn't a tricky concept.

The disinformation from the NO camp and the result was beyond shameful.

    Just fucking legislate it anyway.

  16. Today is a sad day for Australian history.

#Australia held a #referendum to decide whether to recognise in the Constitution #Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the nation's first people.

The response has been a resounding no.

Personally, I find it a disgrace that the majority of Australians rejected this opportunity and are fine with the status quo.

  17. I gotta admit, I am not surprised but was still optimistic because there is no way to vote "no" without looking like a racist cunt. Turns out #Australia has no problem admitting at an official capacity that they're racist cunts.

  18. To all indigenous/First Nations Australians: I personally make a commitment to listen to you, your voice, and the voices of those who represent you, to understand and together find a better way forward.

  20. CW: TW Voice to Parliament, AusPol

Very, VERY important things for my fellow whites in #Australia to consider when you vote today ~ facebook.com/keiran.stewart/po

Have you actually been listening to First Nations people and their history, or are you listening to propaganda funded by the same mining giants and centrist-conservative politicians who have been undermining First Nations (and other racialised people such as Palestinians and asylum seekers) rights for years, if not decades?

The #VoiceToParliament was NOT made by Indigenous people, it was prescribed to them in a false ultimatum, both at the conventions in 2017 and especially now during the referendum. There was, and there continues to be, major Indigenous protest to the proposals, claims of near-unanimous Indigenous support are blatantly false.

We should NOT keep boiling this down to a racism litmus test. Yes =/= not-racist, especially if you use that to talk down on Indigenous people who are undecided or opposed to the Voice (white paternalism is still racism, we need to let go of the myth that racism only exists as overt hatred). No =/= racist, especially when Indigenous people are saying No or abstaining in favour of stronger, more self-determined measures.

The Voice isn't the only, let alone best, solution. This #referendum isn't an ultimatum, so why do we insist on treating it like it is? If you're voting Yes to not "let the racists win" despite being aware of Indigenous trepidation regarding the subject, you are centering your own white guilt and Australia's international reputation over the racism itself... it doesn't absolve the more normalised, "benevolent" forms of racism on display there. Ignoring undecided and oppositional Indigenous voices erases the self-determination you claim to be advocating for.

A single vote won't dismantle systemic racism, even if the Voice had been as self-empowering and productive in the process of its creation as its expensive, sensationalised advertising has claimed. We are ALL racist, as racism is an inherent part of the white-centred sociopolitical power structures we exist in. The sooner we can come to terms with that and start centering the voices that actually matter, the better.
